Re:The AI cost of JavaScript frameworks on Sunday November 01, 2026 @06:17AM (#50324532)
Besides a rewrite to another framework using AI, another option is to modernize the framework with AI instead. Personally, I started to like Mithril after having worked with it for a few years. Instead of rewriting it to a better maintained alternative (mithril doesn't have much active development going on since 2015), I used agents to add signals, proper state management, typing, ssr, computed properties, Bun tooling and more to it. Thanks to the existing test suite, changes landed quite reliably. Source: https://code.garage44.eu/jeroen/mithril

Show HN: Podium, presentation rehearsal with coaching

I'm horrible at presenting, so it (Claude) built a simple application to practice it with. Hearing myself, a mumbling crowd, rehearsing and discussing the content with the agent, while adapting the presentation seems useful to me. Didn't try the other personas yet. Feel free to try: https://code.garage44.eu/jeroen/podium (needs an openai api key)

Show HN: Mithril, Bitstillery Edition

https://github.com/bitstillery/mithril is a heavily modified (AI) version of Mithril, that features Signals, a State proxy, SSR, full Typescript & Bun tooling as well as several performance tweaks. We like Mithril a lot, but some parts felt a bit outdated. Instead of switching to another framework, we decided to fork it and modernize the parts we weren't happy with.

Re:Show HN: Cartopolis, interactive globe-sized 3D world on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:30AM (#49878605)
It already uses a harness (lightweight viewer) to generate screenshots with. The agent already sometimes compares it with the aerial layer, but I didn't gave it much thought. Currently, the most difficult things to get right are tunnels and bridges. Comparing it to real location imagery would probably help. I'll give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion!
Re:Show HN: Cartopolis, interactive globe-sized 3D world on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:27AM (#49878541)
Yes, it is all still very experimental. I think the data pipeline (gathering and constructing the tiles mostly) is still a bit problematic. I mostly test from the Android build at the moment, but I'll see if I can give the wasm build a bit more focus.
Re:Show HN: Cartopolis, interactive globe-sized 3D world on Monday September 28, 2026 @10:24AM (#49878498)
It is basically an openstreetmap viewer plus a simulator layer that turns the data (https://versatiles.org/) into 3d at a certain level of detail. The Netherlands have very detailed geo data-sets (https://www.pdok.nl/), which are used to augment the 3d representation with stuff like point-cloud rendered buildings (3DBAG), crop-rendering, benches, etc.. Basically, it tries to combine as much public data as possible, to represent a city. The simulator is then used to be able to navigate through it with an avatar and to build basic stuff (Secondlife prim-style + Lua scripting engine).

The wasm build has some issues. The new build may have fixed that particilar error. Not sure it's working yet (i'm testing on a phone that doesn't seem to do wasm anyway)

You're building the wasm variant? I'll checkout the error. In the meanwhile, you can also try the wasm build at https://cartopolis.org

Show HN: Cartopolis, 3D virtual world (Rust/Bevy/OSM)

Cartopolis is an attempt to recreate a FOSS Secondlife/OpenSimulator-like experience on top of OpenStreetmap data and 3DBAG(Nl-only pointcloud data of buildings). Should be useful for routing, sharing interactive building projects, socializing and geo-visualisations. The Android client was made with gps-rtk support in mind, so users can have fun with AR and cm-precise geocaching (TBD). Any...

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (July 2026) on Friday July 17, 2026 @03:58PM (#48951655)
I have been working in the past with Secondlife and OpenSimulator, and since then I aspired to build a map/virtual world mashup that would be suitable for augmented reality. Lack of time and experience with 3d coding always got in the way. Recently I gave it a try with Claude Opus, Rust, Bevy and Openstreetmap data (overpass/nominatim so far) and was suprised that a google earth style tile map system, 3d buildings and global poi's in the form of layers was not that hard at all with the help of AI. So now I want to build something useful out of it, which also should include social features like avatars, gps rtk, mobile clients, chat & video. Useful feedback is welcome. Show HN: Mithril fork with Signals, state, store and SSR

Tldr; we use mithril in a large frontend application, happy with it, but missing some features. So we generated an experimental version with support for Signals, proxy state, a store and SSR. Ported tooling to Bun + Typescript. Mostly with Cursor + Composer 1/1.5. Compatible with regular Mithril. Performance with Signals seems pretty good. More AI slop or useful tooling? Time will tell...*...

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (February 2026) on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @07:47AM (#46974290)
I'm working on a set of open-source applications to help collaborate on building software. Basic principles are better online communication between people(Pyrite - Galene SFU, channel-based chat), automating i18n and project management where feasible. Mostly experimental: https://github.com/garage44/garage44/
Expressio simplifies i18n workflows with tooling that works for both human translators and AI. Type-safe translations, AI translation support (DeepL, Claude), and code sync.

Instead of magic strings like `$t('menu.settings')`, you use typed references: `$t(i18n.menu.settings)`. TypeScript knows about all translations, IDE autocomplete works, and refactoring is safe. The type-safe approach also makes it easy for AI tools to understand and work with translations.

Features:

- AI translation via DeepL/Claude

- Type-safe translations (no magic strings)

- CLI + web UI

- Real-time WebSocket sync

- Lint to find missing translations in code

Works with i18next format. Uses a workspace file (`.expressio.json`) to track source text and translations. Built partly with AI assistance to speed up development.

Re:How a $2k 'Made in the USA' Phone Is Manufactured on Thursday April 10, 2025 @05:09PM (#43648036)
I can't believe people still buy the Purism scam after all these years...I ordered a Librem 5 and a Pinephone back in the days of the other supply chain story(Covid). The Pinephone flew in from China in less than 2 months; the Librem 5 took more than 4 years to arrive. All Purism offered during that time were "opportunities" to invest and exhausting delay stories about failing supply chains, while keeping their customers completely in the dark about their order state. Instead of preying on the goodwill of FOSS enthousiasts, they now try to tap into a new market (nationalism) to sell the same useless overpriced brick to.
Recently used Cursor/Claude sonnet to port ~30k lines of EOL Livescript/Hyperscript to Typescript/JSX in less than 2 weeks. That would have took at least several months otherwise. Definitively a force multiplier, for this kind of repetitional work.
Re:Why does nobody use Time Tracking? on Friday November 22, 2024 @01:40PM (#42216284)
I hate to manually keep track of development time. Wakatime and Wakapi (https://github.com/muety/wakapi) are super useful to generate monthly stats from its api. Made an open-source tool to generate monthly hour reports with: https://codeberg.org/garage44/garage44/src/branch/main/packa...

Show HN: Codebrew – An open-source AI-powered development workflow (early stage)

Hi HN! I'm working on a suite of open-source developer tools, and I'd love to get early feedback on the approach and architecture. What I'm building: Codebrew is an AI-powered development workflow tool that aims to automate ticket management, code reviews, and time tracking. It's part of a planned ecosystem alongside two other tools I've been developing: Pyrite (real-time collaboration) and...
