It's unlikely that it is inaccurate by that much. The company would not want to show higher salaries either (resentment).

You are probably underpaid.

To further the analogy.. as soon as the fruit on the low hanging branches becomes bad enough to justify the additional effort of climbing the tree for the better fruit, people will do it.

Your argument makes it sound like you're saying no hard problems are being worked on currently, which is simply not true.

Re:Tesla Motors Announces a New Home Battery on Tuesday February 17, 2015 @09:32AM (#9062355)
The "grid" doesn't yet exist in certain plots of land. One may want to build a house in the woods, but not pay the costs to get electric/water/sewage run to the property from whatever main road is closest.
Re:Dementia 'linked' to common over-the-counter drugs on Monday January 26, 2015 @06:45PM (#8950402)
And given how that worked for cultures before the modern age, I'll stick to those who choose to study medicine. Not those who simply prescribe whatever they felt worked once, for a reason unknown to them.
Equal in value does not imply equal in thought, experience, or skill. I think that is the major flaw in your argument and why you are misconstruing breaking down barriers for women as "sexist".
Re:Ask HN: How to price yourself? on Saturday October 04, 2014 @09:53AM (#8409482)
$45 is absolutely not the top range. A previous startup paid more than that to our overseas developers. It is definitely lower than a US contractor rate, but not by that level.
As a white male, I disagree with your belief that race has little to do with police interactions.

There is much, much more data as well. It's rather frightening that it has taken this long for us to do anything about it.

It's possible, but the likelihood is so low some might wonder why you're bringing that possibility up rather than discuss the much more likely alternative and how we can fix it.

Also; "I asked men and women in tech if they would be willing to share their reviews for a study and didn’t stipulate anything else."

Re:The voodoo of lobster economics on Sunday July 20, 2014 @10:40PM (#8062267)
That's the silliest argument I've heard in the past 30 minutes or so (that's saying something online!)

I loved the taste of lobster as a child. Feed me caviar then, and I'd be completely grossed out.

Why not hire remote?
Did you read the article? There is no irony here, she immediately points out her lack of understanding of fundamental accessibility principles. That is why she wrote about how we as an industry allow that to happen (senior engineers who know nothing about catering to disability).
Re:Firebug 2.0 on Tuesday June 10, 2014 @02:39PM (#7874479)
Most developers I've met have both installed, and wouldn't think twice if you said "I'm better with Firebug, do you mind if we switch browsers?"
When deciding whether to partner with an organization, I view their team page. You are not only excluding potential coworkers via certain choices.
Re:It's just wood on Thursday May 08, 2014 @05:50PM (#7717929)
In the beginning it's tough to determine what is worth contracting out and what is not. After you spend some time experimenting (and often having it all come out in the wash as you saw), you can gain a better sense of when to call in an "expert" and what to DIY.

Maybe they could get free conference passes, or an invitation to a company gathering if they are in the area.

"Mundane" cycling daily is all that it takes to get the majority of health benefits. No reason to downplay what he's doing.
Re:Help fund Rails Girls Summer of Code 2014 on Thursday April 03, 2014 @02:00PM (#7524698)
We can all simply "make an effort not to let it happen" in 2014? Shucks, I wish we had thought of this earlier! Such an easy solution.
Re:Why We Cancelled Our Kickstarter And Funded It Ourselves on Tuesday March 18, 2014 @04:16PM (#7424701)
You're addressing something avenger123 never asked. They are asking HOW the process happens, considering removing the binding is the most efficient way to accurately scan them as far as we are aware.
Seemingly more reputable than your source; you.
Re:Why Programming is Difficult on Friday February 07, 2014 @01:11PM (#7197716)
Yup, if we want to beat the analogy further, I would say the constant attention to code "smells" and such is like cleaning behind the refrigerator daily when you see dust has landed. I think there is a great middle ground, where you actually consider the possibility that the improvement to the code will be a net loss (time investment to improve code and time it saves in the future). Lots of books about this, many people don't get the full theories, and instead take the talking points (x lines of code per method, don't do Y, do Z, etc).

Luckily, he is not forcing you to donate, so you can choose not to. :)

He also commented on his site that he "is poor", so it could be that he simply hasn't landed enough gigs @ $400/hr to be in good financial shape yet.

Your 1 minute demo video does not load due to a https mismatch. You should be able to change the iframe to point to "//www.youtube.com/embed/clKpU9ygaCA?rel=0&autoplay=1" to fix the issue.
Re:Google Doodle celebrates Canada’s coldest day, -63 ℃ on Tuesday February 04, 2014 @12:06AM (#7175625)
Sure, it may be less important, but I'd hate for someone to think that means it's majorly less important (in other terms, unimportant).. letting a car warm up in cold weather is good for it, regardless of innovations.

Re:Poll: What is your level of education? on Friday January 31, 2014 @05:03PM (#7159473)
I was at a state school paying a reasonable tuition to learn from a quality computer science program. I regret it because although I have written all sorts of frontend code, Ruby, Python, PHP, Java, managed servers, I have still not "finished" learning what a CompSci student learns. I couldn't write my own compiler, I can't tell you which sorting method is fastest for certain data sets, etc. I have learned solely by what is needed at the time, and have created value for businesses I've worked for, but I often just don't have the additional motivation to learn things I don't immediately need. I have SICP sitting on my bookshelf, unfinished.

Anyways, basically finishing CompSci would have forced me to learn some of the theories/necessary base things that I may be missing now.

Re:Poll: What is your level of education? on Friday January 31, 2014 @04:49PM (#7159394)
Dropped out and still regret it, even though I am a CTO 5 years later.
You aren't going wrong. I have been had chronic sleep issues, allergies, and similar problems for the last few years, and I am in my twenties. Being provided with a GOOD health plan has been a saving grace, and allowed me to continue concentrating (and producing) great work. If I was given a lower quality plan, I would either be paying thousands out of pocket for specialists and visits, or deciding not to go at all, and likely falling into a cycle of worry and depression about what could be causing the problems.
