> They straight up told Mozilla this 3 years ago when they signed the billion dollar contract; Mozilla had 3 years to become profitable.

Wait, why does Google care if Mozilla is profitable?

Moxie Marlinspike's Perspectives addon for Firefox was a good attempt to resolve some of the problems with self-signed certs.

Unfortunately, no browsers adopted the project, and it is no longer compatible with Firefox. There are a couple forks which are still in development, but they are pretty underdeveloped.

I wonder if Mozilla would be more likely to accept this kind of project into Firefox today, compared to ~4 years ago when it was first released, now that privacy and security may be more important topic to the users of the browser.

Additionally, with all the emphasis people put on being a responsible adult, that's not something that's really taught in school. There isn't much value placed on learning how to budget, keep track on finances, but then when people are unable to do so it's all their fault. That doesn't seem right.

Thanks for that, I was struggling for the right words when I was writing the post.

I would really like to see another crypto currency come out that addressed the validating client issue. I think that could also get more people interested in it too, since they would be earning money just by running the client.

>> What happens when the value of a coin is less than the mining costs or ledger maintenance?

> There are transaction fees that go to the block miner.

The issue here is that they go to the person who mined the block originally, but they aren't passed on to those who are simply running the client to maintain the ledger. With the increased difficulty in mining, it's very unlikely for anyone without a large investment in hardware, that you're ever going to make money on the fees. It provides no incentive to run the full client to help the network confirm transactions.

Re:Marc Andreessen tweets about YO on Friday June 20, 2014 @09:24PM (#7923787)
So you could use YO like you would a missed call, maybe to get around the charge of a text, but if you're on a smartphone, there's already plenty of free texting apps. WhatsApp, Line, Telegram… You can just send short messages though those instead. They aren't any more expensive…

Yeah, seems like a lot of people are jumping straight to the comment section based on the headline.
Re:Ask HN: What makes Firefox OS better than webOS? on Tuesday May 27, 2014 @07:17PM (#7807480)
Yeah it seems like it was a great platform, and was just held back by the companies that owned it. I'd still like to see it be picked up again, even if it's not by Mozilla for the reasons that fabrice_d pointed out. I remember it looking really slick, and running incredibly smooth, even on the hardware that was available 5 years ago.

Ask HN: What makes Firefox OS better than webOS?

I don't understand why Mozilla chose to create Firefox OS, rather than pick up development of Palm/HP's webOS?It seems like a lot of what Mozilla wants to do could be done easily with webOS, since webOS has been open-sourced, it would run great on the hardware Mozilla is targeting, apps are developed with HTML+CSS+Javascript… what am I missing? If webOS couldn't make it as a platform, why will...

Re:Why Online Communities Decay Over Time on Friday May 23, 2014 @06:17PM (#7791657)
I think karma scores have a negative impact on sites, because they encourage people to post agreeable (or antagonistic), shallow content. Reddit is an easy example of this. There are 'karma whores', which just try to accumulate as many (or few) points as possible, on the site, which negatively impact actual discussion.

Hacker News tracks average-karma-per-post, which if it was the only metric available to the user, might be a good fix for this problem. You'd still get feedback on how people perceive your comments overall, but it couldn't turn into a competition over points.

Does anyone know of any websites that have implemented such a system?

It's not really, because a motorcycle can out-accelerate the traffic they filter past.
> So I should be able to ride my bike on the highway.

You can't drive a car at 20mph on the highway either.

It's most certainly in dispute. I'm disputing it right now.

You seem to think that communism is the same thing as "communism under Stalin", and that's incorrect.

Re:Apple Said to Be in Talks to Buy Beats for $3.2 Billion on Thursday May 08, 2014 @11:06PM (#7719104)
I'd say more than slightly. Spotify's main draw is that you can search for the song you want to listen to, and you can hear that song.

iTunes match works off your own personal collection, and Radio is just like Pandora. Neither allows you to look for things you don't own and listen to them.

Communism == Execution for Thought Crime, apparently.

>Criminal profilers might qualify as experts in court, saying someone "fits the profile", helping the state make a case, while their profiling could be totally wrong, as it was in the famous sniper case, where they went with the classic "middle aged caucasian" and the killer was black and with his son(?) as an accomplice.

What case is this? Also, is "middle ages caucasian" some kind of trope in police investigations? I wasn't aware it was…

Re:Amazon, in Threat to UPS, Tries Its Own Deliveries on Thursday April 24, 2014 @05:24PM (#7643129)
"a truly fair free market" doesn't translate to anything, because it's not attainable.

No way to guarantee this drug would have been invented. However,

I'm absolutely confident that we will work on curing disease until we no longer have to.

If something is to replace Javascript, it's going to be because of the language, not Brendan Eich.

You mean like everyone else who's tried before moving to public funded elections, with restrictions on campaign donations?

Of course I can't guarantee that one change will result in a third-party getting meaningful representation, but it's at least a start.

>over half the population of California had the same opinion as Eich, back in 2008.

Well, over half of the population that voted had the same opinion. Voter turnout was around 60%, iirc. Additionally, even if 60% of people held the same views, it's still possible to choose not to work for them.

jholly's post reads like a concern troll.

More like companies still running XP risk security reputation. How long should MS be expected to support that OS? They've already postponed the retirement at least once to give people more time to upgrade.

Mistaken identity is likely, considering how eyewitness accounts are actually quite unreliable.
