Re:Ask HN: Critique my resume. Looking for a career change on Sunday August 04, 2019 @08:34PM (#20610136)
Thank you for looking at my resume Chyzwar. I'll look into professional resume writer. I am told that I am one of the handful of people that actually "make money" for the company, whatever that means. With that said, my business impact is difficult to qualify and quantify since the company is so hush-hush about finances.

Ask HN: Critique my resume. Looking for a career change

Hello guys, I'm looking for a more traditional developer role. I was hired on my latest job in February but am realizing that I am learning skills that aren't directly related to how I want to grow as a developer. I am being pruned into what is more like a controls engineer rather than a programmer, the latter of which is more related to what I went to school for. (Don't ask how I got my...

Boss asks if I think this is the right job for me?

So a little background. I started my first 'programming job' close to one month ago. A lot of my onboarding so far is just learning with very little work that provides value to the company. So three days ago I choke on a minor but simple mistake, which ended up being an easy 40 second fix. It was a based on networking, which I am just learning. My boss ends up not being pleased. I mentioned to...

Show HN: Need some help on my resume

Hey guys, I recently graduated and am having trouble getting callbacks for a phone interview. In the last two months I have been on only two technical interviews (one coding and one design), and while I technically passed (according to the interviewers), I have a feeling they went with someone with more experience.I really need your help. If you have the time, I would like some advice on how...

Ask HN: Should I put my GitHub profile on my resume?

I'm hesitant to post my profile here, but I'll try to describe it the best I can. I really only have one open-source project that I've collaborated on, roughly 140 lines of code altogether. It was a scraper for a local non-profit.The rest is just class projects, or repos I forked but have not added to. (I intend on getting to them) I also have some freelance work I've done but I can't make...

Ask HN: How to make friends?

I realize that this is likely posted once a year, but I haven’t found an answer specific to a personal problem. I should probably give some backstory. Without going into too much detail, when I was a kid up until the age of 12 I was bullied so badly by much older members of my extended family that it sent me to a downward spiral. I didn’t fully recover until senior year of high school, where...

Ask HN: Tips for applying out-of-state for an Entry-Level job?

Some context: I have been applying for jobs for about two months now. I currently live in an area that is not exactly a tech hub (quite the opposite actually), so I'm forced to apply to out-of-state. You can't even find an internship here at the moment.I recently had an interview for an Entry-level position halfway across the country. I thought it went well and I passed the rather...

Thanks rmk! This looks to be perfect for what I'm looking for.

Ask HN: Any good online Discrete Mathematics courses?

So a bit of a disclaimer: I've already tried the MIT Math for Computer Science, and it was difficult for me to be motivated to take it, perhaps because it was a slightly too advanced for what I am ready for at the moment.I have also tried reading Rosen's textbook, which I found much more approachable. (problems tended to be easier, relatively easy to read the textbook, etc) My only issue is...

Re:Ask HN: Will an unpaid internship boost my resume? on Friday February 16, 2018 @12:10PM (#16393809)
Okay thanks! I'll definitely send a resume when I get back home. Really appreciate the help!

Ask HN: Will an unpaid internship boost my resume?

I am about to graduate with a degree that is heavily programming based while working as a Math TA. That said, I need to gain some experience. My issue is that I've sent out about 10-15 resumes and the only one that has gotten back to me so far was an unpaid position with a startup.I'm pretty sure I have landed the position, and they are working on an Android app, which I would like to gain...
