Indeed, but also complete responsibility for safeguarding these. It's hard to imagine a good situation where an individual has complete control but not complete responsibility, that way lies moral hazard.

Perhaps not the same one, but there's a fantastic course by Barbara Oakley by this name. I viewed it quite a while back, but the modern incarnation seems to be [0]. In a similar vein, the book "How we learn" by Stanislas Dehane is also very good!

Famously, they struggle with this one: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42160768
Re:Why I Don't Have Fun With Claude Code on Friday January 23, 2026 @09:11AM (#46732688)
Indeed, one of my favourite things about coding assistants is that I can now get an easy code review on my personal projects, or once I've thought through my approach have it think up alternatives I may not have stumbled on.

I've found it very unsatisfactory (both experience and results) to use them to replace code production. But in terms of augmenting the process - used to critique, explore alternatives, surface information - they're getting really quite handy.

It feels like reputation / identity are about to become far more critical in determining whether your contribution, of whatever form, even gets considered.

The AWS Lambda PR/FAQ was released late last year - worth a read

Of course not - that would be ridiculous - it's clearly a job for a Mini-Me! ;)

As in they've been discussing detecting clandestine AI labs? Or just how almost no activity is now in principle undetectable?

In economics terms - a Veblen good

It's listed as available for the personal plan under "Compare Plans and Features" -> "Application Networking" on the pricing page

When you reconciled the balance in your bank account / credit card statement against that in your set of accounts, you'd notice the error as the statement balance would be 1000 higher than reflected in your accounts.
Re:Gemini Ultra Released on Thursday February 08, 2024 @06:41AM (#39300795)
FYI for any Googlers - On the "Sorry, Gemini advanced isn't available for you" page, clicking "Learn More" gives you a (presumably internal) SSO sign-on (links to https://support.corp.google.com/googleone?ai_premium)

Indeed, one couldn't possibly recommend a Monolith in 2023/4. A macroservice on the other hand ...

Right. I'm off to polish my conference talk notes

Re:Tacit Knowledge Is Dangerous on Tuesday December 12, 2023 @12:04PM (#38614929)
Use an internal Q&A / Quora-style tool with good search. Trying to keep little snippets of info like that under useful MECE categories only ever ends in pain & frequent refactoring.

Then, as alluded to in the last section, you can link IAM to an OIDC identity provider to hand your workloads temporary role credentials

In the spirit of no true Scotsman, you're not truly enterprise until there is a combination of barely working software and aggressively wrong documentation working in perfect harmony

> I don’t know any field that charges by the half hour

Not that it detracts from your overall point, but some of the best paid knowledge workers on the planet - lawyers - regularly bill out in 6-minute increments.

I’ve watched Tenet and I’m not sure I can explain what happened either …
> What are the benefits of ambiguous laws?

That they can deal with the massive amounts of ambiguity & blurred lines / grey areas the world has to offer. Too many of our everyday concepts can’t be expressed rigorously for a formal encoding & determinate decision process - a famous example being obscenity’s famed “I know it when I see it” definition - and many are highly context dependent.

Particularly from a landlocked country ...

Ah yes, getting sued as a service
Re:EFF denounces Google's WEI proposal on Tuesday August 08, 2023 @02:45PM (#37053658)
I don't get how this would be seen within banks as any different to the existing endpoint security offerings offering remote attestation that - by the same logic - they would already be mandating customers to use to access banking platforms, because doing otherwise would mean not being "as secure as possible" and getting dinged by the regulators.

> Even the cold start and memory benefits could largely be replicated for native code if you write a custom kernel ... people act as if lightweight isolation is fundamentally impossible without a JITted platform

I think when most people refer to this as being "impossible", they mean practically impossible, not dis-allowed by the laws of physics. "First write your custom kernel" is a step only a miniscule proportion of projects can justify.

As to unique capabilities - none of its capabilities are really earth-shattering in and of themselves. But together and combined with the fact the barrier to entry is so much lower than alternatives like custom kernels, it's quite understandable why people see it as bringing something new and exciting to the table.

It sounds like Feb 2020 was when the line of credit was arranged, not when it started to be drawn on
> after a quick email, you can get a huge “discount” to show your boss. Just ignore the fact that you’re still paying 2-3x market value.

This is rampant across a lot of enterprise & mid-large B2B vendors because of purchasing departments getting evaluated on the %discount and not by any measure of value for money / market pricing. If purchasing requires a >20% discount to ok your deal, of course the incentive for the seller is to bump the price accordingly and see it waved through.

Re:Show HN: Arroyo – Write SQL on streaming data on Wednesday June 07, 2023 @06:02AM (#36224906)
In the watermarks documentation it mentions that events arriving after the watermark are dropped. Are there any plans to make this configurable (to disable dropping or trigger exception handling) and/or alertable?

I can think of quite a few use cases (particularly in finance) where we'd want late-arrivals to be recorded and possibly incorporated into later or revised results, not silently dropped on the floor.
