He did what? The pre-existing know-how to build reusable rockets? Are you confusing SpaceX and Tesla?
Re:What’s new in IndexedDB 2.0? on Wednesday October 26, 2016 @06:33AM (#12795347)
I understand the transactional requirements but AFAIK most IDB operations are already async. Open for example:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/API/IDBFactory/...

"The method returns an IDBOpenDBRequest object immediately, and performs the open operation asynchronously."

No mentions of promises? Any reason to rev the spec without promises?

Sounds like you're describing Microsoft Research's CHESS (2007), and a host of related projects (Google's ThreadWeaver for Java).

See http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/projects/chess/ and https://code.google.com/archive/p/thread-weaver/wikis/UsersG...

Thanks for that! I knew they'd loosened de-duce up a bit, but this was ~10 hours.

Re:“On Accident” or “By Accident”? on Thursday September 24, 2015 @06:21AM (#10270801)
An interesting companion would be J.L.Austin's "A Plea for Excuses", where he contrasts "by mistake" and "by accident".

If you're not familiar with the author, Dan Davies, he's been a contributor at Crooked Timber (http://crookedtimber.org). A great intro would be his choose-your-own-adventure intro to the Greek financial crisis from 2012 (http://crookedtimber.org/2012/02/16/so-what-would-your-plan-...).

Paul Krugman called this post from 2004 one of the great blog posts of our era: https://dsquareddigest.wordpress.com/2004/05/27/108573518762...

I've been working on a virtual table (not for React, but KnockoutJS) that's designed around needed to virtual scroll over a large number of columns (as well as rows). Really in-progress code at the moment, but getting there...

[Knockout-Virtual-Grid](https://github.com/jstclair/knockout-virtual-grid)

[Live Demo](http://jsbin.com/roheqo/1/)

You can edit that on JsBin and easily increase the columns to 5-10,000. You may want to look at [editableCell](https://github.com/gnab/editableCell) for some of the keyboard shortcuts.

So you've just sterilized the Einsteins...

The whole premise is that "like produces like", which of course is nonsense. Dumb people have brilliant kids, ugly people produce beautiful children, and so on and so forth.

Awesome! Gonna spend a weekend on this.

Re:Creating an ASP.NET VNext Docker Container Using Mono on Saturday November 15, 2014 @03:25AM (#8611201)
Have you thought about a Vagrant + Docker tutorial next? I got a few different Docker images running vNext on my Mac; it's great, but not really a development-first solution.

Re:Why TypeScript Isn't the Answer on Sunday March 30, 2014 @01:16PM (#7496919)
Well sure but compare that workflow with almost any other package manager. NuGet, for instance:

install-package jQuery --version 2.0

We haven't had major problems with DT, but I see that over time this is crying out for a fix

Re:Why TypeScript Isn't the Answer on Sunday March 30, 2014 @12:04PM (#7496569)
Sure, but that's a bit of a burden for library authors, don't you think? I appreciate all the freaking hard work the definitely typed guys do, but I hunk there's a few structural problems in the project:

  * everything in a single repository on GitHub. Makes it hard, for instance, to reuse from other package managers, like Bower
  * they don't have a good story around versioning different libraries. Last I checked, they had a typescript wrapper for jQuery, based on the latest version. Sticking with an older version? No accurate type definitions for you!
Re:Why TypeScript Isn't the Answer on Sunday March 30, 2014 @11:42AM (#7496474)
I've worked on a large typescript project for the past 6 months with 5 developers, and this type of superficial analysis doesn't track at all with our experience. Yes, TypeScript is a superset of Javascript - aimed at making large projects more maintainable. If, as this seems to saying, you're starting with the assumption that JavaScript is a terribly flawed language, TypeScript probably isn't going to make things magically better. But then, perhaps you should consider working in a different area of your application (or the industry), because JavaScript is what we've got to work with.
Nice... Anybody using cli tools like this in conjunction with a git client-side post-commit hook?
Re:Why is git pull considered harmful? (2013) on Wednesday March 12, 2014 @11:07AM (#7385996)

I found it interesting that in a presentation given in 2013, the (only) comparison to a competitor's processor was the Pentium 4 (Prescott) from 2004(!).

You can also elevate your feet, which will (naturally) force you to sit more upright. In the past, I've used some books (wrapped in an old plastic garbage bag to keep them safe from mopping). But now, I'm used to it, and it's enough for me to just put my feet on the chair's wheels.
Re:UN caused deadly cholera in Haiti, covered it up, lawsuit says on Wednesday October 09, 2013 @08:05AM (#6520708)
The UN was founded in 1945, while this mission started in 1960, so it's a bit inaccurate to describe this as "how it got started." This was however (according to the linked article) the first "peacekeeping mission with muscle."

I'm by no means well-informed on the specifics of the UN's peace-keeping in the Congo, but if you're going to link to the UN's role (and provide your own TL;DR), you might want to place that within the context of the Congo Crisis [1] itself. That might put a bit of nuance into the story you're telling.

And again, no Congo expert, but I'm highly skeptical that the UN intervention is the proximate cause for the Congo Crisis. You might want to start by looking at the role of Belgium, well-documented in the book King Leopold's Ghost [2]
