Of course it's incomplete. Any explanation of nutrition that doesn't include mention of at least calories, macronutrients and micronutrients isn't useful for understanding what's actually going on or being able to make an effective nutrition plan.

Re:Talking to 35 Strangers at the Gym on Monday May 04, 2026 @12:25PM (#48010858)
I can see why people would be irritated by 1 and 2 and they happen to me too, but I have just reframed how I think about them.

If someone jumps on something I'm struggling with, I take it as an opportunity to really pay attention to what they're doing and try to learn. They might just be way stronger, but they probably also have some better technique ideas.

For #2, I just take it as a slightly awkward attempt to reach out and socialize. Advice isn't harmful. At worst it's a mild spoiler (oh well), or just wrong (then ignore it). At best it's a great chance to learn something.

I'm awkward and it's rare for me to start a conversation, so I just take someone else talking to me as an opportunity to connect without having to make the awkward first step, and try to spend a minute or two (at least) talking with the person.

I love when I'm climbing alone and working on something really hard for me and some random people just start cheering as I get near the top. :)
Re:I Won't Download Your App. The Web Version Is A-OK on Monday April 06, 2026 @01:44PM (#47664303)
Measuring tech skill by how many tabs you have open is like measuring carpentry skill by how disorganized your workshop is.
Re:OpenAI set to discontinue Sora video platform on Wednesday March 25, 2026 @08:04AM (#47516228)
I think the real answer is that Sora-style AI slop videos just aren't as addictive as we thought they'd be.

I let my kids have access to the app in the hope they would be inoculated against being obsessed with AI video and it actually worked. They got bored in like 2 days.

It simply doesn't compare well with handcrafted short form videos that are already plentiful on TikTok (which I absolutely don't let my kids watch).

Re:Evaluating Godot (2023) on Saturday March 07, 2026 @12:19AM (#47284734)
If you're interested in making and finishing a game, there is no good argument to be made for writing your own engine unless you have some very very specific rendering requirements (e.g. you want your game to be in hyperbolic space or something, or have 3D portals).

In every other case by writing your own engine you'll be wasting your time on a million already solved problems instead of actually, you know, making a game.

If you're interested in game engine development, or graphics programming, and not so much in finished games, then you can write some engine code as an educational exercise, though.

Not only possible, but exactly what AI does. :)

Re:Formatting code should be unnecessary on Sunday September 07, 2025 @07:58PM (#45163396)
Exactly. This idea comes up time and time again, but the cost/benefit just doesn't make sense at all. You're adding an unbelievable amount of complex tooling just to avoid running a simple formatter.

The goal of having every developer viewing the code with their own preferences just isn't that important. On every team I've been on, we just use a standard style guide, enforced by formatter, and while not everyone agrees with every rule, it just doesn't matter. You get used to it.

Arguing and obsessing about code formatting is simply useless bikeshedding.

What a strange position this is (from the link): "the future of work is being more than one deviation from the statistical norm"

This by definition can apply to only 16% of people who are at least one deviation above the mean.

What about the other 84%?

Re:Write to Escape Your Default Setting on Friday February 28, 2025 @11:29PM (#43215903)
I feel the exact same way. I see a lot of benefits to writing by hand, but it is just so unbelievably, painfully SLOW, compared to my typing.

Re:I read the dictionary to make a better game on Saturday July 06, 2024 @10:00PM (#40894730)
Yup, that's a really good point. I kind of wish I had marked ambiguous words on a first pass, and then taken a bit of a different approach for a second pass of just the difficult ones.
Re:I read the dictionary to make a better game on Saturday July 06, 2024 @09:59PM (#40894724)
I don't, unfortunately. I'm trying to avoid having a dedicated backend for this so there are Google Analytics but they don't allow that granular of a metric.

That definitely could be something interesting, but I'd probably need a decently larger player base to get enough data, considering how many words are possible.

Re:I read the dictionary to make a better game on Saturday July 06, 2024 @02:27PM (#40892189)
I did consider this but the effort of doing a full dictionary pass is a lot to ask for marginal improvement and I don't know anyone quite as obsessed as me who would do it. Paying someone would be possible, but finding the right combination of "willing to do it for pay" and "I trust their judgement" is hard.

In practice, the way I approach this is by reacting to complaints from players who either don't know words I included or were disappointed I didn't include a particular word.

Those are rookie numbers. I have often set my alarm for 40+ minutes before I "need" to be awake because I know that I will snooze the alarm several times before being conscious enough to force myself out of bed.
Re:The deconstructed Standard Model equation on Tuesday April 09, 2024 @09:26PM (#39986067)
This is called an equation but I don't see an equals sign anywhere. Is it implicit somehow? Or am I missing it?

Another example is open world games. They have to keep world coordinates centered on the player because for large worlds, the floating point inaccuracy in the far reaches of the world starts to really matter. An example of a game that does this is Outer Wilds.
Re:Unity plan pricing and packaging updates on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @10:24AM (#37481792)
"Standard monthly rate" above that section of the fee table.
Re:Unity plan pricing and packaging updates on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @10:21AM (#37481751)
They want 20% of that, PER MONTH.
Re:Unity plan pricing and packaging updates on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @10:21AM (#37481733)
Charging a monthly fee on game installs is absolutely wild, considering that most games on Steam are one-time purchases. The personal fee (for first world countries) is $0.20 / month. If you charged $10 for the game, you'd be losing money after only 50 months (around 4 years).
Re:Unity plan pricing and packaging updates on Tuesday September 12, 2023 @10:17AM (#37481680)
College students don't have to, since they don't meet this criteria to be charged the monthly fee: "Those that have made $200,000 USD or more in the last 12 months AND have at least 200,000 lifetime game installs."

That said, wow. Charging a monthly fee on game installs is absolutely wild. The personal fee (for first world countries) is $0.20 / month. If you charged $10 for the game, you'd be losing money after only 50 months (around 4 years).

Re:No news is good news on Monday March 28, 2022 @03:35PM (#30834626)
Those relatives/friends/neighbors may very well have a healthier relationship with the news than you do. For a certain set of people (me included), news is addictive and destructive to my life, but for others, it's something they can peruse once a day.

Besides which, it's not like a majority of people will ever quit the news. You alone doing it is not doing anyone else a hardship. It's not like anyone is thinking, "Ugh, I have to keep scrolling twitter so that I can keep my news-less friend in the loop."

To be fair, Eric Hansen's win was probably because of a Magnus Carlsen mouse slip. He made a totally nonsensical move and then immediately resigned.
Re:Moderna’s HIV vaccine has officially begun human trials on Monday January 31, 2022 @02:14PM (#30152693)
Regulation will take time to catch up. We manage to create and approve a flu vaccine every year, and that's likely because the general process has been approved, and so each iteration is fast tracked. I don't think that's the case with mRNA vaccines yet.
Re:How bad is my gas stove? on Friday January 14, 2022 @02:23PM (#29939069)
I'm curious what improvement, if any, is seen from using the fan on the range hood while using the gas stove/oven. Since I heard about this issue, I've been using it every time I use the stove or oven, and it does make a different to the subjective gas smell around the house, but I don't know if it impacts actual NO2 levels.
