Re:Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief on Saturday July 11, 2015 @06:35PM (#9871825)
calling obama a monkey is different from calling george w. bush a monkey regardless of intention.
Re:Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief on Friday July 10, 2015 @08:05PM (#9867797)
Certainly if you want to denigrate someone and you bring up their gender or ethnicity, it can be sexist or racist.
Re:Ellen Pao Is Stepping Down as Reddit’s Chief on Friday July 10, 2015 @07:52PM (#9867738)
Regardless of the intention, they ARE both chinese. So is it really a stretch to see a racist element to this nick name? It is racist by default. I'm not saying that it is a greatly offensive nickname or even unfunny, but for someone to call it racist is not at all a stretch.
He's also fine with it when the shop's not busy.

The problem is definitely not the store. The problem is that people are trained by starbucks to treat all cafes like this. His cafe, instantly to me, suggests that it's NOT okay to camp out with my laptop all day there.

that they wouldn't pay artists initially is pretty bad press, to me, at least. Even with the 180, apple doesn't look good here, in my opinion.

swift has a lot of influence on her fans. It's not a minor threat that apple is facing.

Re:Africa Dwarfs China, Europe and the U.S on Wednesday June 17, 2015 @10:55AM (#9732146)
American businesses exploit Americans. Do you really think they would have qualms about exploiting Africans?
Re:Africa Dwarfs China, Europe and the U.S on Wednesday June 17, 2015 @10:43AM (#9732044)
what they're doing is making up a new hypothetical continent consisting of the US, China, Europe, India, Japan and comparing that to Africa.

I think it works to show how big Africa is.

But yes, if you compare countries, you can take comparisons further, and it would be more practical.

Re:Africa Dwarfs China, Europe and the U.S on Wednesday June 17, 2015 @10:27AM (#9731944)
i like the africa comparisons here:

http://www.texasmonthly.com/daily-post/how-big-texas-compare...

the last line might help people understand why people compare these things:

"If you’re the right kind of nerd, you can probably do this forever and not get bored"

Re:A beauty contest winner making Japan look at itself on Friday June 05, 2015 @12:36PM (#9666428)
To be on the same tier of racism as the United States, Japan has to start lynching its minorities.
Re:A beauty contest winner making Japan look at itself on Friday June 05, 2015 @12:33PM (#9666405)
Are you also a minority in the US? Did you live in different areas in the US? Were you physically attacked because of your race or sexual orientation in Japan?

Because if you're going by "casual daily encounters" that seem racist to you, do you ever wonder if a minority in 21st century america experiences the same?

Re:Why Apple is obsessed with gold: It's all about Asia on Sunday April 26, 2015 @06:25AM (#9441254)
it's a huge compromise, since no one outside of china would ever by a gold macbook.

Instead of Silver, Slate, and Gold for macbook colors, Apple should have gone with Silver, Slate and Green.

Re:NeXT Logo Presentation by Paul Rand to Steve Jobs [pdf] on Sunday April 26, 2015 @05:01AM (#9441086)
i'll go a step further and say he's never made a good logo. Ever.
Re:NeXT Logo Presentation by Paul Rand to Steve Jobs [pdf] on Sunday April 26, 2015 @04:57AM (#9441080)
It's as subjective as claiming that Bieber is the greatest musician of all time.
Re:100 Days as a Black Man in Silicon Valley on Wednesday April 15, 2015 @10:07AM (#9381032)
why even bother with someone who claims they've never seen research that proves discrimination in tech? That there's no discrimination against blacks who want to open up small businesses? Or claims that no one wants to diversify nursing? Less than a minute on google and I've found research that concludes there is discrimination in tech, that blacks face discrimination from banks when starting small businesses, and a handful of articles about diversity in nursing just on the first page of google results for that topic.
Re:100 Days as a Black Man in Silicon Valley on Wednesday April 15, 2015 @06:44AM (#9380019)
he says people ARE aware that UNC-CH is a good college. but that "few realize the University of Georgia is a Top 30 law school and Top 5 for my master’s program."

That sounds pretty understandable to me. I don't feel like there's anything wrong with that.

They should call it Blockbuster-style Unlimited Storage.
Re:Can a city really ban cars from its streets? (2014) on Monday March 16, 2015 @02:45PM (#9213404)
or you could just not mind the downvotes whether they are misunderstood, accidental, or random.
Re:Can a city really ban cars from its streets? (2014) on Monday March 16, 2015 @02:33PM (#9213329)
it is hard to imagine right now, but if you made cars completely illegal except for maybe emergency vehicles, i do believe that we would see a lot of creative solutions pop up for transporting bulk items or large items like furniture.
Re:The Open Plan Office and the Extrovert Ideal on Monday February 02, 2015 @11:50AM (#8985122)
though there are plenty of people out there that don't want any fame or any kind of prestige.

would the creative people be a part of the rigid hierarchies?
could you spot plagiarism?
Re:Autism link to air pollution raised on Thursday December 18, 2014 @08:00AM (#8767036)
maybe. i'd also be interested in population growth and migration into urban areas.
Re:The Cult of the Bulletproof Coffee Diet on Saturday December 13, 2014 @07:23AM (#8745036)
I drink coffee and eat buttered toast and can see the oiliness floating around just from the tiny amount of butter that gets into the coffee. it just doesn't look clean at all.
Re:Korean Fan Death on Friday December 12, 2014 @02:34PM (#8742208)
Well if, like you say, all koreans believe that a fan "chops up" air molecules (maybe they all believe the blades of fans chop up CO2 into CO) then they really need to be criticized. I agree with you that its an absolute shock that they believe this. It is definitely one of the crazier beliefs a modernized population can have, and I admit that I believe a staff can be turned into a snake.
Re:Korean Fan Death on Friday December 12, 2014 @01:09PM (#8741697)
you make a good point. And I also certainly would not be afraid of ghosts in an old house. I would be afraid of the unknown and unfamiliar places.

but at the same time, what is interesting to me, is that most of us can get scared by horror films or movies about ghosts. so if you get scared by a ghost in a movie, could that mean you believe, at least for a moment, in ghosts? or would it simply mean that IF ghosts existed, you would be afraid of them.

Re:Korean Fan Death on Friday December 12, 2014 @01:00PM (#8741640)
It did make my job easier. But so did the overall politeness in the culture. That's part of being gullible. It's that a large part of it is associated with politeness and willing to hear someone out.
Re:Korean Fan Death on Friday December 12, 2014 @12:34PM (#8741450)
I feel for you. As a Mormon who has been on missions to Korea, I can without a doubt say they are the most gullible people on the planet. They believe in some crazy stuff.
