The book "Good and Real" opens with this thought experiment and has a good discussion.

Scroll down to find the (IMO) more interesting papers. As mentioned in a few comments on the linked page, people tended to submit and upvote very meta articles.

If the article is correct (future really bad, tricked public going to invest on day 1), wouldn't it make sense to invest and sell very soon?
Is something special about an IPO where you have to hold it for some time?

Re:The answer to "Will you mentor me?" is...No.
on Sunday December 12, 2010 @12:57AM (#1996582)
This is an interesting counterpoint to the OP (from your link):
When I was starting to learn Linux after getting frustrated
and formatting Windows ME off my HDD, I quickly learned how
to ask questions the smart way: go to a Linux-promoter's
forum and say, "Windows does <insert task> better than Linux"
or "Linux is bad because it can't do <insert task>". Every
time I did this, I was flooded with solutions... unless I
was right. Either way, I had my answer. Meanwhile, if I
asked questions the smart way as recommended by Raymond,
I'd be lucky if I received any answers -- I'd have already
done a bunch of research, and this would be clear, so
nobody else would feel the need to do experimenting or
research on their own to figure it out.

If I only need to get one question right it doesn't take many questions before (3/4)^n is smaller than the chance the professor, for whatever reason, avoided C.

Combined with perpetual crunch time, it has the potential to be an anti-perk (since then you won't ever get paid for those days).

Simple is not short. A very short explanation could be given in formal mathematics but it would not be simple.
Re:Ask HN: Best Philosophical Books?
on Saturday July 10, 2010 @02:09AM (#1503161)
I don't know if it counts as a serious philosophy book, but I really enjoyed Godel, Escher, Bach. Math, computers, consciousness, etc.
I'm currently reading Reasons and Persons. Thought experiments and discussion about how personal identity works under, eg, transporter copies.
Re:Hold off on proposing solutions

My solution was to read the whole thing (up to some point in 2009). There is an obvious downside to this solution.
Re:Hold off on proposing solutions
on Friday July 02, 2010 @01:13PM (#1481657)
I wonder whether it really would help with just one person. I suspect part of the problem with groups is that the one who proposed a solution will take a social hit if it is rejected. So, with just you, that shouldn't come up.

Re:What Python Fixes
on Wednesday June 02, 2010 @08:21PM (#1399938)
I agree. I first learned to program in Python and then started learning about other languages with more options enabled. Coming from a Lisp to Python would have felt strange. Maybe worth it to use a nice library or program?

The point of firing her isn't to get rid of a bad worker; it is based on game theory. The firing hurts both MIT and the dean, but it should dissuade people from lying in these kinds of situations.

Re:Google may be skewing how the public views nanotechnology
on Wednesday May 19, 2010 @03:17PM (#1362003)
It's easy to lament the shift in coverage away from basic science and towards applied topics, but I think it may be a good thing. Nobody understands science or math, so the choice is to leave it out of the press, or else go the pop-sci route and basically make stuff up. At least with the applied articles you can accurately describe what we get, if not how.
Re:Sales is awful. I want to be a web developer. Where should I start?

Other people here will tell you how to get into web development. But it sounds like you're very unhappy with your job (though don't overlook that there could be a different/other problem). Why don't you quit your job and get by doing something you don't hate?
