Re:Marshmallow Test Fails to Replicate on Friday August 02, 2024 @01:20PM (#41140718)
Think of the marshmallow test as a short story by a famous author. It rings with truth, but it's not "science".

Plagiarism will undergo a change in definition.
Re:ChatGPT in Academic Writing on Sunday March 05, 2023 @06:20PM (#35035311)
Your observation, while accurate, is a tangent. The point of the bibliography in the context of an academic paper is to reference the academic merit of the work. In the case of science, this would be reproducible experiments (ideally).

Perhaps you would prefer to include the generated text source as an author.

Re:ChatGPT in Academic Writing on Sunday March 05, 2023 @06:08PM (#35035216)
if it's not reproducible, it's not science
Re:ChatGPT in Academic Writing on Sunday March 05, 2023 @06:01PM (#35035162)
At some point the bibliography needs to reference the LLM itself which would need to be hosted indefinitely.

Re:Solving Every Sudoku Puzzle (2006) on Wednesday September 04, 2019 @03:37PM (#20880661)
A long time ago I did high school math instruction. I used Sudoku for an initial introduction to proofs - something where the student knew they were implicitly going through a "proof" process.
Ran a consultancy for years

Most important advice I'd give is to liberally turn projects down and there are two positive outcomes

- you don't take on projects that don't make sense for you

- the best projects are the ones where the client is resilient enough to negotiate through your initial "no"

is your framework a reference to David Brooks' Ted Talk?

i don't think you're imagining the selection process properly.

i think to get the right mental model, imagine instead that they only wrote "send a one-minute video and convince us to invite you".

We are building a platform for development and testing your code on simulated and/or benchmarked hardware - with computer vision applications as our beachhead market. We liken it to "CAD for CV".

We have a great team and are growing (right now!) in a lot of areas:

- Product management

- Developers (full-stack, image processing, compiler experts, hardware, proserv)

Feel free to reach out - email in profile

Love the narrative style!

Re:Why Toys? on Thursday February 08, 2018 @01:51PM (#16334528)
The best dichotomy I've heard for this is:

Are you building [Ice Skates] or are you building [Ear muffs]?

Ice skates allow you to do something new that you didn't even know you had a demand for. Ear muffs solve a problem that you were already solving poorly (with your hands).

[Business vs toy] is an insanely counterproductive mental framework which will create a false sense of security in founders who are actually building crap - just because you can play with it does not mean it has value.

zinger point taken, but consider:

1 - compared to a rock, all humans are equal (note: this is not a political statement and has no relationship to theocracy)

2 - if a unit of food sits on the ground between two people, they are free to behave however they want, either can choose to pick up the food or not - this is liberty

3 - given that a unit of food when found will be split evenly (by some process out of an individual's control) their behavior no longer matters - this is not liberty

Milton Friedman's three categories for human equality: equality before God, equality of opportunity and equality of outcome - the second is compatible with liberty, and the third is socialism.

Re:Is the Rise of Contract Workers Killing Upward Mobility? on Tuesday October 03, 2017 @11:31AM (#15393054)
"In a fixed career you have a chance to build something up, while in contracting you're often back to square one with each new contract."

When you are "contracting" (I assume you mean freelancing) you ARE working for a "company" - YOU. Your boss is you, your accountant is you, your assistant is you, your maid is you. If you don't give yourself a promotion, sure you won't "build something up".

What you describe is not inherent to "contracting" it's up to you. Some people thrive in that scenario.

Re:Trump’s F.C.C. Pick Quickly Targets Net Neutrality Rules on Monday February 06, 2017 @04:02PM (#13583886)
totally agree. but my understanding is 'net neutrality' accepts this monopoly as a given and says the monopoly needs to be regulated. i think opponents would say - let's try to allow for competition (to break up the monopoly without central planning intervention).
