So what do you do with those people who did do those despicable things as teens? I don't just mean this, but any reprehensible action. I think obviously we can maybe keep them from getting any kind of comfortable jobs, keep them doing drudge work. But even then, do you really want a neo-nazi cleaning your toilets? No, that's not good enough.

We need to round them up and contain them somewhere. Their remorse can't be enough. We can't have them contaminating our air. If we put them in a single location and kept them from getting in and out, concentrated, we could keep ourselves safe from these people.

I knew it'd make a comeback!

...well, I mean, it IS just next to Zimbabwe. Can't be that great, can it?

This, absolutely. If I were looking to get my foot in the door, I would totally code a week for free. Hell, my first freelancing gig, I made 8$/hour.

The three months without pay thing...that's a little different. I'd tell them no way.

What's the difference then between this and MapR, besides a similar CLDB pattern? (No single point of failure)
...and there goes OfferUp. My wife loves that app.
Yeah, because I'm totally going to be interested in listening to a bunch of Al Jazeera reporters try to do Al Jazeera America again. Totally unbiased reporting, that. :P

Best Practice to Level Up: Don't make a whole new framework that is in no way compatible with the prior framework and just label it the same expecting people to use it.

Sorry, when I read this, for some reason, I thought you were saying the author of this article was the guy posting this, and that because he had posted a sexist tweet, his proof that PHPixie was a fraud was invalid.

Yes, one way to end an argument you can't win is to go straight to character assassination. Kudos, well done sir.

Or, "How to hire people who will slavishly work 100 hours a week for a 40 hour/week wage."
I'd be interested in such a thing but these homes are far from affordable. In fact they're priced a bit more heavily than homes in nearby Elmhurst, IL, no bastion of cheap home prices.

I'd be up for trying this if I could get it for around 250-300k for the 4br and then that allows me to pick up the land for 150k and come out about 150k cheaper than a standard house, but you're expecting me to pony up 500k + whatever it costs for the land plot, when I can just buy a house for 550k in the same neighborhood prebuilt.

My point is, your value prop isn't real. It's a great home, and a great idea, but it's actually more expensive square foot for square foot.

My wife and I are going to be house hunting in the next two years, and we would have considered this option but it's actually more expensive.

You can give the standard Tesla "but you'll have lower (gas/electric) bills" argument but I like air conditioning, so I doubt that's true for me, and even if it was, it doesn't really sell me either. "Because you'll save so much in the long run(and we can't really prove you will), you need to pay an extra 150k up front!" doesn't ring well.

EDIT: To clarify, I basically feel like in order for this business to work at all, it has to be a much cheaper option than a normal home, because there is an accompanying huge risk in investing in one of these. It's resale value may be next to zero, and all it's fancy gadgets will be out of date by the end of next year.

I once had a terrible experience with their kindles. They shipped me one that was a dud, and when the screen went haywire in the first few days I called and they admitted that this batch had issues. Unfortunately, they told me, I would have to shell out 100$ for a new one, even though it was their fault.

Even Amazon screws up royally, too. I bought a Nook and never looked back, and haven't bought a book from Amazon since.

Re:Does Work Really Work? on Wednesday February 11, 2015 @05:56PM (#9036256)
This is probably the dumbest thing I've read today. The difference between a worker and a slave is clearly at the end of the day, the worker has more money than at the start, and can exercise buying power over whatever he or she wants to do, including retiring and leaving the company.

This is basically just communism re-wrapped as "changing work."

Gave him 5$. Thanks HN for showing this.
Bahahahaha
Cowards.

The first thing I did as a developer was to write a SOAP wrapper gem for Propertyware's API. It was here that I learned the concept of Pain.

Ok, I had a feeling this was an edge case.

Kind of didn't work. I signed up, and i was trying to set something up on my staging to scale it out if a dyno was idle, but it didn't appear to work. I had it at zero dynos, so you'd expect it to scale up immediately.

Also, not great UI design. I kept wanting to manage my monitors, but to do so, I had to hit Status, and then hit Manage Monitors. I'd rather have had it on the sidebar, like Add Monitor was.

Re:Rejected for a Job at the Container Store on Wednesday November 12, 2014 @03:50PM (#8598052)
Honestly, it sounds like during the best of times she spent each and every paycheck in full, and then when hard times fell upon her, she had nothing to fall back on. This is a common symptom in our consumerist society. An author of her magnitude would have been making enough $ at one point to stow away at least a few years' expenses if she'd just sacrificed a little more during the fat period.
Re:Some are more equal than others on Monday November 10, 2014 @12:09PM (#8584720)
It is interesting that OP uses a line meant to denigrate socialism to critique capitalism. I think that the graph is misleading - the average poor person today has 3 wide screen TVs, an Xbox, a smart phone and air conditioning. Poor people in 1916 would sometimes starve during the winters. To compare 1916 to 2014 as if they are equal highs in inequality is meaningless: Overall, everybody is much, much better off.
