They aren't based on his original comment.
Completely agree. The help in my local walmart is horrific. I have a running joke with my g/f that I feel like my IQ drops everytime I go in Walmart. As aforementioned - Amazon makes it SO easy!
I don't think so.

Ask HN: Best Shared Web Hosting for Python Apps

I've used Godaddy a number of times for LAMP-stack applications (I'm not totally sold on them).I'm looking to downgrade my linode vps to shared hosting on another platform - no need to pay $20/month if I'm hardly using the resources of the server. As mentioned, I'm looking to decrease that $20 per month bill and use some cheap shared-hosting, to host my existing apps (> 100 hits per month...

Appreciate this feedback - thanks.

Ask HN: What would you do?

I found a startup on Craigslist that I've been doing freelance work for, for about a week now.I just got paid last week but now the startup wont sign my contract listing things like hourly rate, payments, and so on... Pretty basic stuff no crazy clauses or anything. They refuse to sign my contract but want me to sign theirs... Much much longer (10pages)As freelancers - how have you dealt with...

Freelancing: How do you specify your hourly rate for *new* clients?

For freelancers... Do you specify your hourly rate upon being asked (early on in process), or do you say you set a fixed budget (based on a proposal) for new clients?I've read that specifying the hourly rate upfront can weed out deadbeats, and/or clients you don't want to work with, is this true?Overall how do you, as freelancers, work through this process? Thanks!

Ask HN: VPS Linode Vs Digital Ocean

I'm trying to decide between these two companies: Linode vs Digital Ocean for a new VPS.My needs are: potentially heavy CPU, and heavy memory usage.I'm using a Amazon EC2 (Micro) instance right now - and paying ~$25/month for it (its never shut down) - which seems pretty non-cost effective for a VPS from Amazon that never is shutdown. One of my biggest gripes right now about Amazon is its...

I concur, I feel like this or any other situation to bring out true emotion is what is needed.

Ask HN: East Coast Vs West Coast: Risk Adversion

I've been meaning to ask this on here and wondered what your thoughts were on this.I live (currently) on the east coast, but visited the west coast (SF to get to the point). After 25 years of living on the east coast, I've started to see a trend of folks here regarding joining/starting a startup venture.I talk to countless individuals (tech and non-tech) would refuse to leave a cushy 9-5 job to...

Ask HN: why do companies use 3rd party recruiters?

I've talked to 30-40 recruiters over the past few months about various jobs in IT.I wondered why so many companies use 3rd party recruiters as opposed to in-house recruiters? Is it just the money or what is it?Other developers on here - what are you thoughts on communication with 3rd party recruiters?Recently I've found in-house to be far more effective in communicating the company, position,...

Ask HN: Entrepreneur Excuse: "I dont have enough experience"?

I've been working on an IT-Sec company for some 6 months now, solo founding it. I recently met a guy at a networking event who advises startups - we met 1:1 for coffee, and then he sent me a really lengthy email basically being really frank on what I was doing.I have a number of years of IT experience already (primarily in programming) and some IT-security (some of the experience hands-on out...

Is there a market left for vulnerability scanners?

There seems to be an abundant number of vulnerability scanners out there for web applications and I'm wondering of the market potential left for new vulnerability scanners with some differentiation (not so much on the technology side)? Thanks for your input fellow hackers

Fsk - do you think this is what happened here to me? "If I write the spec for free, I know he'll then just shop the spec around on freelance sites, and I wasted my time"
Re:Ask HN: How to deal with this freelance client? on Thursday April 24, 2014 @11:54AM (#7641053)
I would do this, but I knew this guy for a few years prior. Its not like a random person off elance or something
Re:Ask HN: How to deal with this freelance client? on Thursday April 24, 2014 @09:12AM (#7640025)
Thank you both for your response.

Yeah, I mentioned 25% would need to be paid upfront before I begin coding.

Ask HN: How to deal with this freelance client?

I'm new(er) to freelancing.I just had a personal contact (known him about 1.5 years now - met at network event) he reached out to me about a really cool software project he needed done for this recruiting business. So what I did is : 1) Spend 30-45 mins (2 times) talking on phone to him about it. (1-1.5 hrs total)2) About 3-4 hours mocking up his proposed solution in a flow chart.3) Another hour...

Re:Special Case: Reverting to Software Engineering Career on Wednesday April 02, 2014 @12:50PM (#7516892)
Why dont you just build something with your knowledge (a fun side project) - forget the MS and taking a code course. You can't learn the in's and out's of developing in a language without doing it.

So do.

Re:Ask HN: How do you earn your money? on Wednesday April 02, 2014 @11:25AM (#7516172)
I'm doing that - took a job straight out for 1.5 years, did a startup - didnt work out. Now, going back into workforce to save up some more $$ (for the next one :) )
*descriptive
'guarantee' is the wrong word here, more description would be 'how likely' with a response of very likely.
Re:Ask HN: Startup Quandary - build myself, hire or outsource on Wednesday March 05, 2014 @02:19PM (#7349109)
It seems like you are writing a book about me.

On the short: I hired some contractors through elance/odesk - this was NOT the right thing to do. They lack motivation in what you're doing.

My advice: build it yourself, no matter how long it takes.
