Where can't you do this? It's possible to drive from London to Beijing if you really want to.

Is there anyway to tell if the screen will be like a mirror? I've used a 1080p HP laptop that had the same issue. If I was coding with a dark background I'm staring at my face the whole time.

Thanks. I put marginally more info here https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15493070

But essentially, if I'm mainly interested in performance and the screen it sounds like an XPS might be a better choice than a thinkpad? Do you have a 4k screen?

Re:Introducing Surface Book 2 on Tuesday October 17, 2017 @01:55PM (#15493070)
That's pretty much the exact T470p config I was thinking of getting.

I will probably rarely use the keyboard/trackpad except when travelling (not often) as most days I plan to use an usb mechanical keyboard+mouse. So all I'm really bothered about is whether I get better value for money in terms of CPU and screen with the XPS compared with a thinkpad. Of course the XPS is prettier as well ;)

I've read the XPS screen is amazing whilst the thinkpad one is not so hot, do you have an opinion on this?

Is this for software development (assuming yes since we're on HN)?

I'm currently in the process of making this choice. Looking at Lenovo T470p/Dell XPS 13/15. If I'm doing linux development is it worth even thinking about the surface laptop?

Re:Amazon and Apple hit by EU tax crackdown on Wednesday October 04, 2017 @06:28AM (#15399426)
Growth is earned by the extra employment in the area, generating income tax and reduced reliance on benefits/public services.
Presumably you weren't reading books on music theory.
Re:Ask HN: What do you do while your project builds? on Friday July 21, 2017 @09:36AM (#14820388)

Certainly if something took 30 minutes to build I would be taking drastic to reduce this time!

What I should probably be doing is setting the build off in "screen" then just continuing to look at code whilst it builds.

Ask HN: What do you do while your project builds?

I'm currently working on a program that takes around 30 seconds to build, when making changes to a single file. So far I have been switching to Chrome and checking HN/News/Facebook whilst it builds. Inevitably I don't switch back immediately when it finishes building, and the distraction to something completely different no doubt decreases productivity. I suppose I should just stare at the...

Is this quote the difference between Google and Apple?

With Google, you are the product - you pay $ and have your data harvested and used for advertising. With Apple, you are the customer - you pay $$$ for a locked down, secure (they try?) system, that doesn't sell your data.

I grew up as an Apple hater (no particular reason), but now that privacy is becoming more of a concern, it seems that the Apple ecosystem offers a better product? Am I being naive about Apple?

Isn't 25 supposedly the magic age when more cells die than are created, i.e. when you start 'aging'.

> However, from my experience there is a cap on the 'bandwidth' at which you can sight read this. It is just too hard to mentally parse a bunch of numbers on lines and turn that into notes when playing at speed. (For non musicians, 'sight reading' means to read the notes and play fluently at the same time)

Sorry but this is wrong IMO. You've been reading sheet music your entire life, but you've only been reading tab for the past few years.

I've been reading tab for 10 years. I think in tab. There are a bunch of songs that I can't be bothered learning (sultans of swing, metallica songs+solos, oasis songs.. you get the idea) because I don't like them enough but are fun to play along with, and I do so with Guitar Pro playing the tab at full speed. It's basically like rocksmith/guitar hero but in "real life" mode.

> Until the tax situation changes

Do you mean in the country the cash is sitting in?

Because in the article it says:

> With over 90 percent of its cash sitting overseas, a one-time 10 percent repatriation tax would give Apple $220 billion for acquisitions or buybacks, Citigroup analyst Jim Suva said in a note to clients.

> U.S. President Donald Trump's tax blueprint, which was unveiled last month, proposes allowing multinationals to bring in overseas profits at a tax rate of 10 percent versus 35 percent now.

Re:Study: carpooling apps could reduce traffic 3x in NYC on Tuesday January 03, 2017 @11:13AM (#13310095)
Except in Paris there are so many cars in use, causing such a huge amount of pollution, that the government had to ban half the cars in Paris from driving on certain days last year.
