from the blog.zencastr.com dept.
I was able to bootstrap a SaaS business by working as a contract engineer half to three quarters time and building my company in the remaining time. I lowered expenses by moving in with family and eventually to SE Asia until profitability. This meant I had infinite runway but also it took longer . I prototyped for six months and then ran/tested the service for free for almost two years before it was ready for paid plans. Then it went from 0 to ~15k MRR in the first month. A couple of tricks like requiring Dropbox connection for users file storage and utilizing webrtc’s p2p capabilities helped keep running expenses manageable during the lead up to profitability.

Not ergonomically if you have an average hand size.
Interesting. Could you be more specific about where your pain was located? Was it in you arms or wrists?
I'm really happy about the return of the SE sized phone. I had been planning buy used SE's if I needed a replacement of my current one. I've got an iPad Mini that I can take with me if I want a bigger screen. When I don't, it's really nice to have a compact and capable phone that you don't need two hands to use.
Worth noting that simple-peer has a companion library simple-signal for the signaling side.
Also it’s nearly impossible to contain a cat that is motivated to explore
I’m a bit wary of this idea but I can’t say I haven’t wished for it many times when my wrists are in pain and a deadline is looming so I can’t take a recovery break.
I recall reading an article recently about city birds using butts in their nests to ward off insects.
Yeah, they were mountain bikes. Seems crazy to me that you have to spend $1000+ just to get something usable. Ah well... :P
Its been awhile and I can't really remember. I spent about 700 on the bike so I thought it would have decent components. Maybe you have to spend more?
I have not. Never even heard of that but I'll check it out now. Thanks :)
I use a single speed bike at the moment. Not because I hate gears but because I’ve never had a geared bike that didn’t constantly click on the outside gears. It drove me crazy trying to tune them perfectly and never succeeding. Forget increased efficiency. If a new design emerges that accommodates gears and is simple to tune properly, then sign me up. No idea if the design being discussed could offer this.
I suppose it depends on what your theme and goals are for the podcast but it might be a good idea to keep a slot open for a different guest each episode instead of finding a permanent 4th member.
Having outside guests on your show who bring in fresh points of fiew is a great way to keep the content from degenerating into a series of inside jokes between you and your co-hosts.
I have found it generally isn't that hard to talk well known people to join you for a 45 minute recording since they are already usually working on finding ways to get their message out / build their brand, etc. already. Depending on the domain, a many of them actually pay people to help them get booked on podcasts for this very purpose.
Again, I have no idea what your ambitions are or if this would suit your theme. This is just what I have picked up from observing the more successful users of my podcast recording service. Shameless plug, sorry :/
Anyway, if you and your co-hosts or guests aren't able to recording together in a studio, you might give the service a try. You can use the coupon code WELCOME for 20% off your first the months. If applied to an annual plan, the discount will apply for the entire year.
Good luck with it and let me know if I can help with anything other wise.
I'm disappointed that the timeframe is so short but I can't say that I am surprised. The writing has been on the wall for awhile now and I was already looking for alternatives.
The 'Standard' product was shut off abruptly and they tried to shove everyone onto their half-baked swarm mode platform. When users who were happy with the Standard platform (and confused by swarm) fought back, they re-enabled 'Standard' mode as opt-in. Unfortunately all development halted at that point and it has been more or less abandoned for over a year. They stopped providing updates on their managed nodes and stranded all of their users on outdated buggy versions with no way to update.
Also, there was quite literally 0 customer support for even for paying users unless you had contracts with them in the thousands per month.
Its unfortunate. As far as I was concerned, Docker Cloud (Standard, not Swarm) was very close to what I needed. As far as I can tell they got so caught up in battle for orchestration supremacy with Kubernetes that the left a good portion of their user base in the dust.
Perhaps this is a well calculated decision for them as a company, but from an end-users perspective, it feels like they lost their way and abandoned their users.
Anyone have suggestions for good hosted alternatives?
I'm looking for a service that offers:
1. Hosted node management with nice simple UI
2. A dashboard with visual health monitoring for nodes and containers
3. Configurable alerts via email/slack/sms
4. Github / auto-build / CI integration
I'm currently investigating https://nanobox.io but am interested in any other suggestions.
EDIT: Formatting
Bummer. I use their service and would have paid but they never asked. Good alternatives paid or otherwise?
You can ‘tumble’ bitcoins to obfuscate the true source and destination walets
I get your point but where do you draw the line? It seems pretty subjective. Who truly starts off with nothing?
EDIT: spelling
It is different when it is against your will, you have no means of entertainment / stimulation, and you don’t know how long you will be there. But don’t take my word for it. Commit a small but arrest worthy infraction on a Friday night and try it for yourself.
Apparently not enough of a deterrent to keep our prisons from over crowding. It is also inhumane in my opinion. I think that it would do everyone well to spend a weekend in solitary in jail. It is torture and should be seen as such.
Thanks for the info. Hopefully future breakthroughs can change this math substantially.
Anyone know how feasible it would be to run this on solar power in the near future?
I listened to this as well. Another interesting thing he mentioned was that you could use calcium as a conductor on the moon. Apparently it is a better conductor than copper and is abundantly available. It doesn’t work on earth because it reacts poorly with the oxygen atmosphere.
I can’t imagine the pressure of having raised 2bn!!! and needing to create a decent ROI for investors.
I’m pleasantly surprised to have my company included but he spelled Zencastr incorrectly.
Ah well. I guess thats the risk I took going with a weird spelling :P
Very cool! I love seeing all the stuff people are building with web audio. It would be great to have a way at some point to use web-based VST's in popular DAWs.
In a similar vein, I made a simple collaborative beat sequencer with some friends for the Node Knockout awhile back.
http://ebb.somethingcoded.com/
It just uses samples for playback since web audio wasn't a thing back then but I'm working on porting it over to doing full synthesis in the browser.
FYI- You need to invite friends to join in with you as each person can only control a single track. Or just join in multiple tabs and play by yourself ;)
