I'm building a dashboard for a client.
I realised how easy it is for me to build the dash.
But how hard it is to sit down for 1 hour, look at the pages, scroll through them as if I am my client, notice inconsistencies, notice where the numbers don't make sense.
Sitting down, and actually checking and comparing and thinking were already hard before AI, and they became a lot harder.
There’s an interesting case around this with the Taranto steel plant. This plant was heavily polluted. Italy has criminal liability for executives for ecological violations. The owners went to jail and the government asked Arcelor-Mittal to come in and clean the mess. Arcelor-Mittal received a shield from the government for the criminal liability. The next populist government withdrew the shield. Arcelor pulled out. Now the government is managing a steel plant while looking for a buyer.
Broadening criminal liability for executives might sound like a good idea but there are a lot of second order effects
It’s also a portal in time. 2000 years ago people were looking at that same moon
My daughter is four.
I drew a boy who lived 11000 years ago in Mexico.
His longest travel was a half day walk carried by his family to a nearby foraging ground.
He died at 4 from a zoonotic fever. Both parents outlived him.
It’s random, it’s ai generated. Makes me appreciate life nevertheless.

from the ask-hn dept.
I really liked Airbnb and was rooting for them ever since they launched. The stock never attained the peak it reached post-ipo (only this month it's gotten close), while Booking Holdings roughly doubled in the same period. The sentiment online seems to be against them (or at least in my bubble). Poor customer service and overprotected hosts seem to be recurring issues.
The mandatory labeling is actually a big issue in Europe as well, it means German products can’t be sold in the Netherlands if they don’t have Dutch labeling and vice versa. Which creates a fragmented market.
I was looking for this one
I was wondering why it wasn’t of the front page of hn already
Combined with ai, we’re on the threshold of a robotic revolution
You bring up a good point. Maybe it doesn't matter whether an ai or a person wrote it, as long as it is concise.
And because most ai's are not concise we blame ai's for faults we don't like in humans either: being longwinding
If I remember correctly the Tokaido Shinkansen goes every 3-4 minutes. I think the frequency on the Utrecht-Amsterdam stretch is on average 5 minutes?
A couple of things:
1. Direct the AI to look specifically into areas where I have a gut feel things might go wrong
2. An assessment by another model (eg Codex reviews Claude's work)
3. Manual testing
Great idea! I would love a tailored version based on Goodreads or Storygraph
Maybe it’s about the power to control the internet (and what is does and doesn’t serve) worldwide.
Kinda surprised this one didn’t get more votes
Ai going the same way as crypto, before you know you have to move your hq to Panama or Dubai
Kinda ironic
By now they have so many unique routes people with more willingness to spend have to fly Ryanair anyway (or do a layover with a “premium” airline).
It seems techies collectively try to avoid ads, but clearly other segments of people actively click and buy through ads. I would love to get a marketing expert's view on this. It differs by product obviously, but there must be some common character variables (gender, wealth level, ...)
I bought once through facebook ads, and now I actively try to avoid any ads
Vibe coding allowed me to build a couple of map-related things I geek out about:
- a map with all direct train destinations from a given station
https://trainconnections.ai-tigers.com/
- a navigation app which avoids traffic jams even it takes longer (I like to stay in flow state)
- a bicycle navigation app which avoids traffic lights (for the same reason as the traffic jam app)
Thanks for the golden tip, I just told Claude to use OSM and it actually built an app which works!
For a while I tried creating traffic-light-free bicycle routes from my home in the suburbs to my office in Amsterdam center (because intersections, especially with trams, can sometimes take a long time.
Unfortunately there was no API with data on which intersections have traffic lights and I had to build these routes manually in Strava using satellite images.
I did learn in the process that some traffic light data is actually available from the government, but only for selected partners. The Flitsmeister app for example has it and shows at some traffic lights how long it will take for the light to turn green (in a car, not on a bicycle)
Swapped my OpenClaw to Claude again. I played around with Gemini and Chinese models in past month but it didn’t work for me.
i share your sentiment, the politics venture hurt his brand, but he's still a crazy impressive entrepreneur
i know pieter levels, but i'm not aware that he's making videos?
Richard Branson, he goes against so much convention:
- everyone has so much process to "hire right", but in his books he hired kinda random it seems. And seems to delegate a lot rather than "founder mode"
- the original remote worker: bought a caribbean island for cheap and managed his businesses from there
- random collections of businesses under his brand: airline, telecom, music, ...
was he just like super lucky that everything worked out for him?
I burned my week quota working on one small repo (with a lot of data files though) for one working day yesterday. It wasn’t like that before.
Something definitely changed, or it’s somehow reading all that data over and over again
I don’t think that if you read as much as Marc that you can do it without introspection. Correct me if wrong but you always pick up learnings and ideas which apply to your own life.
I do understand where he’s coming from. One of my forms of procrastination is reading my old notes and pondering and pretending I’m self-improving. But it’s actually a way to avoid action.
And I did learn that if you want to get somewhere, action is what gets you there. Not endless introspection.
I think this is inevitable, and I'm trying to find ways to set up a controlled environment, in which we build a robust safe and isolated foundation, while clients can mess around and vibe-code their features on top of that. I'm still figuring it out so feel free to share ideas.
At least until the end of our respective lifetimes
Hydro has its own problems, it traps fish and it significantly changes ecosystems. It might be renewable but not necessary ecological
