News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Surely there is a more reputable source for this story than a blog stapled to a stolen IRC network
Re:AI compute is the new oil–and needs a new market on Thursday October 22, 2026 @10:31PM (#50203825)
the new oil as in we’re going to make a bunch of products that are needlessly packaged with derivatives of it, leaving behind a toxic mess that will take generations to clean up?
Re:DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @10:05AM (#50131299)
oh is “Flash” a cool sounding word again since Adobe abandoned it?

Re:Gemini 4 Argon on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @12:15PM (#50074111)
at this rate we're gonna run out of stupid names for these things

"Hans, we're doing a new point release! What isn't crossed out on the periodic table yet?"

I ran cat /dev/urandom for six hours but I didn't need to write a blog post about it
Re:OpenAI Feared "Optics" of what might appear on Hacker News on Sunday September 27, 2026 @08:07AM (#49865973)

"Oh I would really like to take a principled stand, but it's just too hard to, I know what I'm doing is wrong and I hope someone takes away my option to do this one day."

Ugh. Either grow a spine and stick to your purported principles, or grow a spine and stand by your actions. Either way, grow a spine.

This is unfair to drug users and perverts

Re:Debian votes to allow "responsible use of generative AI" on Saturday August 29, 2026 @10:53AM (#49490415)
gross
I thought it was booby trap
When my nephew went into computer science, I had to warn him about the bracelet cult people
Yeah I’d be interested at about a third of the asking price

It’s hard to beat LilyGo’s lineup in this area

I turked for a bit trying to make some extra cash leading up to my wedding, but it was a very time-inefficient way to make money. I think I managed to wring 10 or 20 bucks out of it tops after plugging at it for a month.
How many days in a row can you do this, and then still be able to get things done when Codex is unavailable or the price has been raised to $UNAFFORDABLE?

Works for me, they also emailed it to me this morning
Re:GTA 6 will cost $80 on Wednesday June 24, 2026 @12:27PM (#48662251)
It will be very interesting to see if this lives up to the hype and/or if it is able to recoup the enormous amount of money spent developing it. The expectations from everyone seem to be so high; it's a very long way to the bottom if it somehow flops.

Personally, things got a little too realistic for me around the time of GTA IV. The earlier games felt like cartoony fun but I started to feel bad about the stuff I was doing in IV. I tried V a year or two back (I think they've maybe remastered it since?) but it ran so terribly on the Steam Deck that I refunded it.

Re:Sakana Fugu on Monday June 22, 2026 @08:59AM (#48629578)
Fugu, eh? So there’s a nonzero chance this thing might kill me?
yeah, pointless AI-generated header image --> close tab
Nothing but the highest quality drama and theater from Anthropic, as always
Re:Mmorpg World of ClaudeCraft, vibe coded with Fable 5 on Friday June 12, 2026 @06:35PM (#48510206)
What is the point of all these projects like this, except to say that you did something? (that you didn't actually do but half-assed a minimally plausible version of, so hey)

It's tale as old as time at this point: the LLM produced something sort of shaped like some other software, and did it in an impressively short amount of time, but it's basically impossible to bring a codebase made in this way up to production standards, or to maintain it in any reasonable way. Nobody's gonna pay money for this, or want to play it instead of Warcraft. Why should anybody care?

I forgot those existed
Re:OpenAI Submits S-1 Draft to SEC on Tuesday June 09, 2026 @08:06AM (#48460015)
One of my least favorite things about AI is that every time you suggest you don’t want anything to do with it, there’s a horde of rapist-brained twits like you waiting in the wings to cry about how inevitable it is. Shut up and go away.
Re:OpenAI Submits S-1 Draft to SEC on Monday June 08, 2026 @06:54PM (#48453551)
I have instructed my financial advisor to keep my exposure to the upcoming wave of AI IPOs as close to zero as possible.
Reads like “AI is inevitable” propaganda to me
