News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Yep. Hard to see why this increases revenue or profitability

...and when you drill the holes in the wall, remember the lens is often to one side, and NOT dead centre to the projector.

Not that I would forget that tiny detail when I mounted mine. Of course not.

Re:Domain hacks with unusual Unicode characters (2018) on Sunday November 01, 2026 @10:07AM (#50326358)
Is it too late to say most Unicode characters should not be permitted in domains?
Hahaha I’ve recently been looking at a few domains I’ve owned forever too.

But do I really want to start more projects?!?

Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:34AM (#50286056)
Right when it first started it was so much better than what had been there before, and the way they assigned points was designed to encourage lots of people to chip in with answers.

Asking questions did become painful later on. But it was the default site to choose whenever you googled a programming issue for years after.

Re:A Markdown File Should Just Open on Thursday October 22, 2026 @04:44AM (#50192848)
Just treating .md files as text files would get us 90% there. The whole point of markdown is that it’s readable as text.
Re:A Markdown File Should Just Open on Thursday October 22, 2026 @04:42AM (#50192828)
Agreed. Firing up a 12gb app to read markdown seems like overkill
I’ve been to a few places like this and managed to get rid of the Wordpress infestation.
The way things are going, I imagine there are going to be vulnerabilities found in everything
Re:Tesla Roadster on Sunday October 18, 2026 @06:21AM (#50139690)
No you’re right. The jump included a roll
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:29AM (#50114846)
Wasn’t stable. The straight jump they did was more like a mini rocket launch over some parked cars.

You’d want something that smoothly hovers rather than a launch then catch with boosters.

Re:Ask HN: What is the current trajectory of a senior engineer? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:54AM (#50086244)
Most companies that have some complexity to their software will still want devs to build stuff.

And there are going to be lots of new companies that suddenly want to build a load of software.

The profession should hang on for a good while at least.

Re:The Dock on Mac, from OS 10 to macOS 27 on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @02:24AM (#50067551)
Yes drives me mad.

Maybe they don’t realise you can change what’s there?

Re:Show HN: PS2 games statically recompiled to WebAssembly on Monday October 12, 2026 @05:34PM (#50063347)
And it will make less sense for big publishers to invest in building great games if people are just going to be able to decompile and run them on their own hardware.
Re:Cube Type – Isometric Typography Generator on Saturday October 10, 2026 @05:38AM (#50031198)
This is cool.

You just need to add a button that says “buy t-shirt” then… infinite money

Re:I'm in a Meeting on Friday October 09, 2026 @07:50AM (#50019184)
This is fun. The audio isn’t particularly believable. Not that it matters for this project.

I’ve used a few tts providers and although a technical marvel they are all still easily identifiable as ai. Humans are very good at spotting fakes.

This project might work better with mostly canned audio clips of real humans.

Re:Pi 1.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @01:59AM (#49930242)
ChatGPT Work mode is the one with a 5 hour usage limit I think
Re:Pi 1.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @01:57AM (#49930231)
Afaik iTerm2 is the usual upgrade for the macOS terminal isn’t it?
Re:Cartesian – AI 3D Modeling for Design on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @11:53AM (#49714453)
Came to the comments to say something similar.
Re:AirPods 5 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @05:16PM (#49634467)
Really?
Re:We have a year to fix security everywhere on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @02:31AM (#49606274)
Wordpress without any plugins is kinda useless. Best to completely avoid using it, there are better options
Re:Human archive: They were only human on Sunday September 06, 2026 @04:17PM (#49590456)
Saw this in a HN comment and loved it. Also, a little worrying.
Re:IBM Bob on Friday September 04, 2026 @02:51PM (#49568589)
Feels like a manager with no branding skills had an initial “vision” and everyone working there probably hoped marketing/branding would get pulled in later.

Never happened.

Re:IBM Bob on Friday September 04, 2026 @02:46PM (#49568542)
Hahaha. Chip butty
Re:IBM Bob on Friday September 04, 2026 @02:46PM (#49568533)
Yes. The North West and the midlands was where it all started. Cotton, mills, Industrial Revolution etc
Re:IBM Bob on Friday September 04, 2026 @02:43PM (#49568508)
Interesting. Did not know that. I thought someone bought the IBM laptop business and renamed it.
Is this from the same person that did Castle Map a few weeks ago? Feels similar
Re:The Teaser Period: Why the AI Boom Is Hitting a Reset Wall on Thursday August 27, 2026 @12:32PM (#49467480)
And the Open Weight models keep improving.

For many tasks, you don’t need a frontier model.

Yes! This is my pet hate. Third world does not mean poor. Switzerland is third world as it was aligned to neither bloc.
