Re:How to Exist on Saturday August 01, 2026 @03:33PM (#49137631)
Thank you for sharing, I had the very same experience as you and also did some thinking about the why.

My theory: I'm a very non-anxious, relaxed person, hardly affected by stress. So mindfulness did nothing for me, I don't need more calming down.

What I tried next was transcedental meditation (I think it's also called mantra meditation, basically pick a word and kind of focus on it) and this was when meditation got really interesting for me. I fell into different states, and came back from it with intense focus and energy. This was the first time I felt something from meditation and it was way more interesting.

Unfortunately I also stopped that after a few months. Also talking to an experienced friend, wanting more interesting things or trying to achieve different states in meditation is an antipattern, you shouldn't wish for anything, so I guess it's just hard :)

Re:Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2022 on Wednesday June 22, 2022 @03:04PM (#31840406)
Interesting results as always, but on the salary side I find it really hard to believe that on the executive level (C suite/VP) the median annual salary is just 6k bigger than that of engineering managers. I'd imagine not a lot of executives respond to this survey so that probably skews the results.
Re:Startup Trail: The Game of Startup Survival on Thursday May 26, 2022 @01:28AM (#31514965)
I was looking for a similar type of game, focused on resource management, but for engineering specifically.

Something like you need to invest a certain amount of time into new features, tech debt clearing, hiring, etc.. and then get hit with various issues that you need to react to (star employee quits, data breach happened, sales oversold something, ...). The goal would be to survive as a product on the market.

Anyone knows of anything like this out there?

Re:Ask HN: How does your organisation train programmers? on Sunday August 09, 2020 @03:09AM (#24097928)
There are lots of things you can do, for example in my company I set up:

- weekly training sessions where devs share experience and what they've learned or organize workshops for each other

- book clubs where a group of people discuss a technical book/paper they're reading together chapter by chapter

- regular hackathons (I count them as learning) every 3 months where you can play with whatever tech you want

- I buy them practically anything they want in terms of education and encourage them to do it on our 1:1s

- the usual pairing of juniors and seniors for mentorship

- a #learn channel on slack where people post interesting new things related to our tech stack or insights

Re:Ask HN: Best sleep trackers? on Wednesday March 25, 2020 @01:16PM (#22686548)
+1 for this one, I am also a happy user. I needed to send it back after a week of use which was annoying, but after they fixed it it's pretty much perfect.

I did significant research into the sleep trackers before deciding and the bottom line I found out is that anything on your wrist/fingers etc. Just can't accurately tell which sleep phases you're actually in and the offsets are huge, check the user reviews and research, they were comparing all the trackers against a proper sleep lab.

So I decided for dreem2 and have been extremely happy, especially with the deep sleep stimulation functionality, since I didn't buy it because I'd have any sort of sleep issues.

Re:Show HN: ZenJournal – Fast journal app with chat interface on Wednesday December 25, 2019 @02:23PM (#21880009)
For me, the killer feature in a journal is that it sends me reminders of what I was doing 1 month/year/etc ago. I was willing to pay for that feature in the app I use. Maybe it can be useful for your planning.

All the other features seem to be spot on!

Re:Type 2 diabetes: NHS to offer 800-calorie diet treatment on Friday November 30, 2018 @12:32PM (#18570706)
This sounds pretty similar to some of the things Dr. Valter Longo has been mentioning in his book the longevity diet where a part of it are also occasional 5 day fasts with 800 calories, that (supposedly) have great benefits. Great to see this being tested with the general public.
Re:Data on what poor people buy when they’re just given cash on Saturday December 10, 2016 @04:54PM (#13148153)
It's not evident from the short article, but was this a one time payment or monthly allowance? I would imagine that one time or non regular payment would work better than monthly so people don't start to rely on it too much and become lazy.
I'm thinking of trying this combo for some quick projects, are you generally satisfied with the speed and responsiveness of your app?
