With so many people singing the praises of voice to text, I keep thinking about how most sci-fi futures feature subvocalization as a prerec for that kind of adoption. Always love to see sci-fi come to life!

Still rooting for these guys

No single thing made me feel older faster than the fact that, when I was tween, the iPod was invented, took the world by storm and was the coolest device on the planet; and, before I was 30, it was discontinued.
Roughly translates to “stay out of it?”

Which alternative do you like?
Re:So You Think You Could Be an Electrician? on Sunday October 04, 2026 @09:41AM (#49953867)
All the people saying kids should go into trades instead of college have clearly never done much manual labor. You know what sucks? Working under a sink. I’m guessing it sucks even harder when you’re 60
Re:Make Tmux the OS on Saturday October 03, 2026 @10:30AM (#49944600)
I really think DDH may be onto something with Omarchy Quattro — just provide (reasonably) sane defaults and have LLMs built into a Linux distro. The user can describe the operating system he wants, and the clankers handle fiddling with configs

I did an internship in finance in college. Worked at a Bloomberg terminal that earned more money than me

It's a blog post, not a white paper

This is so accurate it hurts. I’ll be scouring the comments for guys who claim they can’t relate posting links to their magic CLAUDE.mds
Re:De-Brainrot Vacations on Monday September 07, 2026 @10:29AM (#49598875)
Similar to OP’s new hobby of math and physics, I recently started scratching a long standing itch to teach myself electrical engineering. I’m using books, YouTube and my brain to learn, and it feels like such a breath of fresh air compared to what my day job as a SWE has become since AI took it over. Because I’m not trying to build anything in particular — and since the learning _is_ the goal — I don’t hear that nagging voice saying, “AI could do this so much faster,” that pops in my head when I write code by hand these days.

I can’t imagine any way NVIDIA could make this worth its money that doesn’t suck for everyone else
Re:Kobo can run apps now on Friday August 21, 2026 @03:42PM (#49392940)
It is maddeningly impossible to get an ereader with all three of these features: b&w screen for maximum crispness; physical buttons for reliable page turns; modern processor for speed.

> standard C-p and C-n bindings don't work

I know it's little, but this was the first thing I noticed and it made me think, "Maybe this app isn't for me."

EDIT: FWIW, I just complained to pi and it added the keybinds for me in 10 seconds.

Your yard would look like shit if you mowed that optimal path. You want long straight lines
Re:The coolest use for the Vision Pro on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @07:02PM (#49104217)
Like many others, I said I’d quit Reddit when they killed Apollo. I was skeptical that I’d actually follow through, but it didn’t end up being a sacrifice at all. The official app sucks so hard it isn’t fun to browse, and now that the mobile site forces you to download the app, I don’t even look at posts from search results much anymore.
I generally wait for a story to get a full feature in The New Yorker or The Atlantic before I give it my attention. Similar concept

Kind of hilarious how much they’re touting that it sucks at cybersecurity like it’s a feature
Re:Mahjong: A Visual Guide on Sunday April 26, 2026 @12:41AM (#47907404)
I think you’re thinking of American mahjong. Which I can’t understand for the life of me how it’s gotten so popular. The ratio of luck to skill is completely upside down
Remember when it was just common sense that letting people gamble on things would undermine the integrity of those things?

I discovered KTool here when you launched and I love it! I hope you’re doing well
Re:I turned my Kindle into my own personal newspaper on Sunday March 29, 2026 @10:57AM (#47563714)
It’s infuriating that Amazon abandoned the Oasis form factor. I love having a safe area on the side to, ya know, hold the damn thing. And physical buttons are so much more reliable for page turns. Every once in a while, tapping the screen to turn the page does something unexpected, and suddenly I’m futzing with my kindle instead of being immersed in my book.

I was a happy Oasis user until last year when I used a new Kindle and saw how much faster they’ve gotten. That started a very frustrating search for a kindle replacement. I ordered and returned many units before settling on the Kobo Libra Color. I didn’t want color, but I don’t notice the lower resolution now unless I’m using it side-by-side with a B&W screen. I do miss whisper sync, which I’d occasionally use to read a few pages on my phone. The Instapaper integration is awesome— I used to pay for KTool to accomplish something similar.

AI psychosis intensifies
So no Linux?
