News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I don't see why not. Rory McIlroy went from pro to amateur overnight.
Re:AOL and Huffington Post sued by unpaid bloggers on Tuesday April 12, 2011 @05:30PM (#2439402)
It always made me sick that Huffington was making so much coin from unpaid bloggers.
Re:Top Gear responds to Tesla on Saturday April 02, 2011 @07:25PM (#2401255)
I enjoy Top Gear but their (ie Clarkson's) animosity towards hybrids, electrics etc. is pretty pathetic, epically antiquarian.
Re:Why TechCrunch is over on Saturday April 02, 2011 @07:20PM (#2401243)
Yeah I largely agree with this: this is a turd of a hatchet job of an article. Pretty obvious that there are personal gripes coming thru. The dipshit acolytes in the comments there cheering on this asshole are particularly galling.

Personally, I think it's totally badass.

Great shit on that page.

An amazing resource. Brilliant... Stanford lead the world in open education (MIT are great too)
Re:How I built 7books in under 4 weeks on Wednesday November 10, 2010 @06:06PM (#1892133)
This. I'm always coming across blog posts for products which I DON'T know... and hit hte header link... and it just brings me to the blog home page. Which usually tells me nothing about what the service actually does.
Re:How I built 7books in under 4 weeks on Wednesday November 10, 2010 @06:04PM (#1892124)
Hell of a good job. Learning to code & build a web app from scratch in 4 weeks is mighty impressive.
Mmmm... overall I'd say don't try to talk him/her 'round. Don't get me wrong... I love Python and am ambivalent towards vb.NET. In defense of VB, it's good for teaching in the sense that students feel like they're accomplishing something... that they're actually building something. They can rattle out a gui and integrate it with the Windows API (for something like a Paint app) easily. Which is cool for them.

Having said that, I think Python is better for students (vb is so unlike other languages). However you're likely to piss your teacher off if you come off all 'hurr u r so stupit, you should teach Python' to him. Easy to piss ppl off that way.

tl;dr a glorified affiliate merchandiser.

One tremendous asset papers have left is trust. They should leverage this trust to offer deals on high-quality products to their readers. If they vet the products to ensure they are high quality, they retain trust. If they retain reader trust, the goods producers benefit from association with the newspaper. Thus, they can offer good deals.

Papers already do this, inn a half-assed way. But leveraging their history of goodwill, built up over decades with readers, has to a great way forward for them.

Re:Launching TODAY (with one humble product) on Friday October 01, 2010 @08:19AM (#1746779)
whoa... nice angle. I wouldn't buy it myself, but it seems plausible that lots of people would.

One thing: consider slightly different angles on this. For instance, a mosaic of all photos in which a person is tagged. And/or in which their friends are tagged. Furthermore, you could break this down into years, such that a person could have one poster for 2010, buy another one next year for 2011, etc. etc.

Also, think about the corporate angle here: I'm sure corporations would live this kind of thing... visual represenatations of the community who connect with them on FB. Hopefully you could sell premium versions to corporations to hang in their foyers: larger, better quality finish, whatever (you'd know better than I). Good luck :D

Re:The sad truth about Facebook on Sunday September 26, 2010 @12:12PM (#1729376)
A powerfully retarded article, if I may say so
Re:Unofficial alternative UI of hackernews on Friday September 24, 2010 @06:02AM (#1723219)
Well I like the original better I guess (nice to see a different design take though... I ain't hatin'). Guessing your alt. design would look cool in an ipad though.
Re:Ask HN: What's Your Story? on Monday September 20, 2010 @03:22PM (#1710153)
I did a Bachelors in Commerce starting 1996. Had a nervous breakdown. Recovered more-or-less. Finished degree. Learned basic web design, did that in a half-assed way, loved it. Had several more breakdowns over several years, alternating between menial jobs and illness-induced unemployment for ~10 years. Got into technology blogging in maybe '06. Became obsessed with Web technologies. Went back to university to to a higher diploma in CompSci in Sep. 08. Loved it more than anything I'd done. Stayed on last year to do a Masters. Loved that too. Now staying on to do PhD with fellowship. Work obsessively. Still very much in a learning phase (spent this evening dicking around with Django). Mentally, never been better. No money of course, but fuck it. Programming saved my life, mafuckers :D

Move along. Nothing to see here.

Re:Camille Paglia on Revalorizing the Trades on Sunday September 12, 2010 @11:03AM (#1683751)
I generally find this woman extremely vapid, and basically a con, but I agree with this particular piece. Though it's not exactly earth-shattering news: 'tailor education to the jobs market'. Her discussion of apprenticeships is interesting: I've thought for a long time that apprenticeship would be suitable for coding, rather than endless hours in anonymity in classrooms, and copying your buddy's work to get assignments done (which is the general 'learning' paradigm for most CS students, far as I know)
Re:Make your Applications Portable with Cameyo on Sunday September 12, 2010 @10:58AM (#1683740)

I vote this. Also test if pizza has some magic quality that aids the coding process
Re:"Easily had an IQ between 250 and 300" on Sunday September 12, 2010 @08:07AM (#1683513)
Cool -- never heard of this guy. I have a theory that the vast majority of the greatest human ideas never come to fruition because the people who have them are too fked up to ever implement them, or to even articulate them in an appropriate environment (academic paper, novel/book , whatever).

I can see this working. LinkedIn isn't for everyone. Signed up.
You think it's already too late to start making other localised Groupon clones?? e.g. in U.K. or wherever??
Re:Ask HN: What do you do to get into the "Zone"... on Friday September 10, 2010 @06:52AM (#1678465)
For some coding task, I gently start thinking about [problemX] well in advance, and then forget about it and do other stuff. I don't even think a whole lot about the problem, just note that I have to do such and such, and maybe think a little bit about how I might do it, then forget about it. If it's an important/hard/interesting problem, the rest comes naturally... I go off doing whatever other piddling crap needs to be done, and by the time I'm ready to sit down to attack the problem in question, I usually start to get ideas, seemingly out of nowhere. I've been following this process for some time now. When ideas on how to implement something start to come, that's the zone right there, far as I'm concerned. I can spend a couple hours without looking up from the screen at that stage.

Long story short: for a problem which I think is going to be hard to implement/fix, I briefly think about the problem well in advance of sitting down to work on it.

Well that didn't take long. Interesting to see if there really is going to be a SEO market for partial words and what-not
Re:3 Asian Major Social Networks form partnership on Friday September 10, 2010 @06:38AM (#1678446)
A sensible move. I know that Cyworld is big in Korea (well... it was), don't know much about the other two. But strength in numbers to fight off the Facebook threat makes sense.
