Re:Writing userspace USB drivers for abandoned devices on Sunday November 17, 2019 @12:17PM (#21558829)
I have a few devices with no public drivers of any kind. Thinking about how to develop drivers on Linux, I’m guessing I should lookup into the chipsets used on the board and see if those companies have drivers I can use as a starting point?
Still requires installing twrp?
You misunderstand how end to end encryption works and what the vulnerabilities were. These are not MITM attacks. I suggest you read the article or the affidavit, they do a good job explaining what happened.
Re:Ask HN: How do B2B startups sell to corporations? on Sunday October 27, 2019 @10:37PM (#21373817)
Sometimes you can do a deal for a smaller dollar value, less intense legal / financial hurdle. Get on the approved vendor list, receive income while you negotiate a larger more complicated approval process for a larger deal.

Would love to hear more about your experience.

I assume the point is that you can’t mistakenly make a insecure call on the SIM if it’s data only.
It was staged to make it look hectic. Based on a quick google search of all other similar photos they tuck in the cables. It appears they probably gave away intel too. The photo gives clues as to how the networks are setup.
Re:Microsoft Wins Pentagon’s $10B Contract on Saturday October 26, 2019 @08:59AM (#21363374)
In government funding you ask that they set the money aside for your specific use. So it’s better to get that set aside for as far out as possible so you don’t have to go back to congress every year and risk political machinations. The 12 year funding is likely a 6 year contract with two optional 3 year renewals or one 6 year optional renewal. There may also be a way to move that money into a new program in 6 years more easily than if you had to go back to congress for a totally new budget.

Browser Fingerprinting is also used for fraud detection and identify verification. There is often overlap between persistent tracking and security verification services.
Re:I just lost my wallet on the way home from work on Tuesday October 15, 2019 @10:24PM (#21266457)
Professional thieves are professional enough to not waste time on the foreigner that was probably broke since you were staying in their neighborhood. And professional thieves need a level of anonymity to work, which goes out the door when they rob someone in front of their aunt.
Re:Microsoft announces new Surface Duo phone on Wednesday October 02, 2019 @09:17PM (#21142633)
I wonder if they will stop security patches after three years ?
You don’t have to guess. You can actually see it.

What you can infer is why and who. Which is the real danger. I would trust google to protect sensitive data like sexual preferences before I trust my ISP.

Re:New SIM attacks de-mystified, protection tools now available on Monday September 30, 2019 @08:40PM (#21120974)
This doesn’t cover any new attacks. Good read though.
Realized after buying a windows laptop you can’t get bitlocker or drive encryption without having a MS account or paying for pro. So security isn’t a feature, it’s a paid add-on.
Re:Reddit was down for over two hours on Thursday September 19, 2019 @12:35AM (#21013335)
Young people now think it’s ok to send out a message and respond whenever they feel like it. Communication is no longer a conversation in the tradition sense, it’s a series of monologues or statements where the sender usually only cares about whether you are impressed by the statement.

IRC was all about conversation. You went there to have a conversation, like a party line voice bridge. You even waited around for someone to have a conversation with... oh I miss it...

Re:Musk spent $50k digging into critic’s personal life on Tuesday September 17, 2019 @09:01PM (#21001583)
If everyone could afford to hire a PI to dig up dirt on some random person they didn’t like, it would be a highly regulated industry. Because it’s mainly a service only the powerful or wealthy can afford no one bothers.
Re:iOS 13’s privacy pop-ups of Facebook data grabs on Monday September 16, 2019 @03:49PM (#20987885)
There is a per app sharing option. So perhaps they added granularity to what usage data sharing to exclude sensitive applications.
Re:iOS 13’s privacy pop-ups of Facebook data grabs on Monday September 16, 2019 @10:22AM (#20984282)
One thing I found find suspect in iOS 13 is Apple automatically enables collection of data of your usage of 3rd party apps. Any idea what this is for?
Interesting, this doesn’t get anywhere close to the 1000 upvotes and 800 comments the Joi resignation story did.
Re:Building a license plate reader from scratch with deep learning on Thursday September 12, 2019 @10:05PM (#20958488)
Any improvement in reading plates at a angle? From my experiments it’s very difficult to ready plates from dash cameras of cars in the left and right lane, even though the human eye can identify them.
Re:Leadership Transition Announced for MIT Media Lab on Wednesday September 11, 2019 @09:58AM (#20940274)
“all funded by the largess of child molesters.”

I thought it was mainly funded by corporations?

Re:Using Spotify data to predict what songs will be hits on Tuesday September 10, 2019 @12:24AM (#20925013)
And maybe eliminate the top 100 artist?
We are just now learning facts, many testimonies were sealed. Even the plea agreement was kept from the victims. Many victims are just now becoming aware of the existence of other complaints. Yes he did terrible things, but the full extent wasn’t clear to most people, including the media who continued to interview him after his conviction.
He wasn’t even charged with trafficking in 2008. Can’t believe I’m getting downvoted.
He was never convicted of trafficking.

And there are no public records that indicate attendees of his events were aware that women were being paid or forced to have sex with attendees.

At least try to convict the dead man with facts and not innuendo.

Joi was a behind the scenes player in a lot of successful Valley startups. Once someone reaches investor level it’s impossible to fully understand where their wealth is generated because it tends to be diversified. But he was a very well connected and respected technologist and investor who pretty much pursued whatever his interest were at any given moment, read his blog and you’ll see that it was pretty diverse.
Aside from this MIT issue, Joi is a very impressive person who earned his money honestly against great odds. Joi was treated as an outsider in Japan and still managed to become successful. I’ve known him personally and found his story to be inspirational. Not defending any of the behavior at MIT but it would be sad if this is how he’s remembered.
