A touchscreen is a way more natural and intuitive interface than a mouse cursor driven by a trackpad.

If I'd never used a laptop before I'd probably do the exact same thing as the kids!

I usually just read a handful and get some aggregate opinion, I've never found someone whose tastes match mine exactly.

I'll have to give Rusted Moss a try. Silksong is kicking my ass right now.

Top ten lists written by indie gaming bloggers for each year/genre are a good place to start, honestly.

If you like 2d platforming exploration types, try Hollowknight, Celeste, VVVVVV, Ori, Animal Well. Each one is fantastic.

I told my fiance it was a bit like if a company that produces keypad door locks accidentally added a master code (115) which works on every single door and has for the last two years.

Yours is much funnier!

Re:Jailbreaking the Switch 2 on Thursday October 22, 2026 @02:20PM (#50199129)
Where'd you go to school? Bay Area? Those sound like smart kids.

For what it's worth, I also had a cracked PSP. I did the battery pack hack, it was gory and awesome. I'm guessing some of the later iterations got a little simpler? All software?

I wonder what % of kids today are using a modded Switch or rooted Android.

The majority of console play time these days is spent in online multiplayer games. I don’t think AI reverse engineering will change that.
Re:Jailbreaking the Switch 2 on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:20AM (#50194313)
I jailbroke my Switch 1 the day I bought it, was banned from Nintendo Online the next day. The only games I bought were physical. I was told this would happen, so it wasn’t an issue at all.

I’ve told my friends if you plan on playing online on it, definitely don’t jailbreak.

Re:Jailbreaking the Switch 2 on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:17AM (#50194288)
The Switch 1 sold about 150m units, the Steam Deck’s sold 6m.

Internet nerds like us aren’t really Nintendo’s target market, I don’t think. Installing emulators or jailbreaking a system isn’t something most of their customer base would have the want or need to do, IMO.

Re:Demographic "Doomsday" Misses the Mark on Tuesday October 20, 2026 @09:48AM (#50166395)
I'm a millennial and I really really like this planet. It's my favorite one. My kids are going to like it here too someday, I hope.

My peers who are skipping kids are mostly doing so because their other ambitions don't align with raising a family, which I totally get. It's a huge trade off, I hope it'll be worth it.

Re:Hello Toronto – Waymo Is En Route on Friday October 16, 2026 @05:03PM (#50124671)
Maybe, but I'd expect a good chunk of rideshare traffic still ends up leaving the city, which AFAIK Waymos still won't do.

My understanding is Uber etc. charge and pay based on demand, so if that means the (fewer) human drivers are that much more expensive on snowy days then so be it. If it's a blizzard and Uber fares work out to $100/h I'd be very surprised if drivers couldn't be found.

Re:I let an AI run my startup for a week on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:55PM (#50124546)
Yes, I'd prefer a world where my parents didn't have to work, I think most people would.

Which accounts posting in this thread do you think are bots?
Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:09PM (#50123000)
At 25k you can easily get a used car from the dealership and purchase the warranty if you're very risk averse.

A 2023 crossover with 50k miles should suit you fine. I like Subarus and Hondas.

Re:Hello Toronto – Waymo Is En Route on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:25AM (#50119595)
I was thinking this too - my guess is the cars simply wouldn't offer rides on days with really poor conditions.

Toronto's winter driving is normally very reasonable compared to Montreal. My guess is the Waymos operate some ~355 days a year, taking days off after big storms.

> You could say there is little overlap between people who are good at basketball and those who say they are good at basketball.

Right, one could make that statement. It would be silly, but they could make it. I think most people who consider themselves good at basketball are probably better than average at basketball.

> That statement does not have any effect on your ability to judge them by watching them play.

Is the notion that someone who's not good at basketball can't recognize a good basketball player?

I'm a little confused by your metaphor.

I liked this a lot!

I caught a bird from Macedonia who told me he was happy he'd never have to deal with another non-technical PM again. Simple delights everywhere.

Re:I let an AI run my startup for a week on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:37AM (#50086063)
When I hear “self-employed” I imagine contract gigs like websites.

When I hear “one man startup” I imagine a monthly SaaS product.

Seems like a reasonable distinction to me.

Re:I let an AI run my startup for a week on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @07:34AM (#50086037)
Ah, I donno. I remember my Dad climbing on top of a camper van to get reception on his Blackberry so he could reply to a client email.

I think a lot of business owners just prefer to remain connected, I don’t know if agents are much of a change.

Yes, that's one way of saying it. I'd wager the moderately paid management at Sutherland Healthcare Solutions is made up of people who aren't as strong of managers as the ones we get in tech.

I'd also hasten a guess that the engineers at SHS are similarly below the bar you're used to.

Most SMBs in the regular world are made up of regular people and could probably be framed as incompetent if dropped into a role in big tech. I don't think it's tasteful conversation for folks like us working well-paid to point at folks in the rest of the economy and remind them how much more clever we are.

Being the best at making YouTube videos, yes.
Re:Triple-A Minesweeper on Saturday October 10, 2026 @10:43AM (#50033484)
Exactly. “Yellow spray paint” has become a derogatory term in the industry to talk about these patronizingly obvious visual cues devs add to 3D games these days to let them know where to go.

I think part of it has to do with reasonable software design principles around affordances and discoverability making their way to game dev. I think the relationship of user::app is completely different from that of player::game. When a user takes 2min to find the button that means the button should be easier to find. When a player takes 2min to find the chest, it could mean a lot of things but it doesn’t necessarily mean the chest needs to be easier to find.

That’s my morning subway take, at least.

The case you’re commenting on took place in Brampton. The Charter is slightly more nuanced on this topic than the American Bill of Rights.

I enjoyed this one a lot.

For those who've read other books on von Neumann, do you think The MANIAC is a reasonable summary?

Re:13 Months Sober (2025) on Monday September 28, 2026 @01:26PM (#49881400)
For a causal linguistic reason, my guess is it's because sober is a fairly common word otherwise and is very easily pronounced, whereas teetotal is much weirder to say and has a pretty specific meaning, so one may go a long time without seeing or hearing it enough to really stick.

The etymology is also strange - it originally meant "T-total" abstinence from alcohol as in "total with a capital T". A funny word, we probably could have done better.

Are you earnestly confused or are you being rhetorical? The US has a long history of subsidies across nearly its entire catalogue of exports.

Re:One Month Without AI on Saturday September 26, 2026 @09:02AM (#49856126)
How many lines of code do you write, on a good day?

I'd expect it's in the tens of thousands, given how effortless you find it.

Re:One Month Without AI on Saturday September 26, 2026 @09:01AM (#49856105)
> What very impressive externally verifiable results have you had with this?

I notice this weird hostility whenever the topic of AI coding comes up and it's never made much sense to me. If someone told me about their new method for practicing guitar I'd feel like a real tool if I demanded they prove it for me then and there.

People don't owe you their "very impressive externally verifiable results" - /u/XCSme already posted their app in another comment, it looked fine to me.

You've made your ideological position very clear here, you don't need to keep heaping it on.
