Thank you. Great points, and gives me a good starting point.

Ask HN: Pay tax on donations?

I have an LLC, just me - considering accepting donations on my website. Will talk to a CPA at some point, but in general will I need to report and pay taxes on donations to a web app?

Re:Ask HN: Router resale and FCC certification on Friday January 29, 2010 @12:18PM (#1086924)
Thanks for the link and quote, appreciate the help. From my searching it sounds like the FCC operates off complaints mostly, so maybe low risk if I did it. But I should be able work around this problem. I'm basically just exposing a GPIO to a RJ-45 connector, so I can access some custom hardware.

Ask HN: Router resale and FCC certification

Brainstorming some hardware ideas, and maybe someone has experience with this?I'm considering low quantity resale of a wireless router with a slight modification (3 wires soldered on the PCB). 1) Would the manufacturer care (Asus)? Legal reasons I can't do this? 2) Would this modification require FCC certification? If I sell more than 30 of these, I can justify/finance spinning my own PCB, etc.

Great, thanks. And thanks for the cli paste - I had not heard of 'nc'.
Re:Ask HN: upd to http on Tuesday May 19, 2009 @10:45AM (#616861)
thanks you. I didn't think any shared hosts would allow UDP listening, I'll look around for that.

Ask HN: upd to http

Google usually helps me find these types of questions, but nothing is turning up. So I thought I'd throw this question out.I need to get a UDP packet to HTTP (on my shared webhost) UPD because a small microcontroller (low cost sensor) generates the packet. To HTTP because my webhost doesn't allow socket connections beside port 80.I'm using a home server right now to catch the UDP packet and...

Last time I checked, this was against appengine terms of service, has that changed?

You could at least have a greeting and some options read by a real person.

Ask HN - Ratio of user response to unique users per day.

Question for webapp owners. What is your email from users to ratio of unique users per day?I've gotten about 6% on mine, wondering if that is similar to others. To break it down a little more, roughly 50% asking for fixes or features, and 50% just saying thanks because they like the service.User feedback is nice motivation, and started some interesting conversations for me.

Thanks for taking the time to share. I don't really want to give up ownership of any code either, and hadn't considered some of your other ideas.

The API idea is excellent, thank you.

I've had 2 ideas already taken by the big guy who can implement stuff quick (but sloppily). I'm not doing anything that earth shattering. Their user base is hard to chip away at when they match me step for step.

Ask HN: Offers to help with webapp

I'm a solo founder, built a web app over the last 12 months, targeted at a niche market of about 50,000. It has received enthusiastic feedback from users. I'd rather not disclose the URL at the moment because there is a monopoly that I'm trying to sneak up on.Something that keeps coming up: People offering to donate and/or help with the software. How should I handle these emails?
