In my case I can't upgrade even if I wanted to because my PC doesn't meet their requirements. It's 7 years old but still runs like a dream. Why would I upgrade my hardware just for Windows 11?
Re:Why Firing Programmers for AI Will Destroy Everything on Tuesday February 11, 2025 @11:15AM (#43014612)
I find the people who promote AI the most are those with vested financial interests in AI. Don't get me wrong, I find it is a useful tool but it's not going to replace programmers any time soon.
My siblings and I were all home schooled until college. We all have advanced degrees, families, and high paying professional jobs. My socialization was great. There is barely a memory of mine growing up were my siblings and I weren't out with friends in the neighborhood. Home school isn't for everyone and neither is public school. Personally I wouldn't trade my experience for anything.
Re:Airbnb removed my negative review on Monday January 02, 2023 @01:35PM (#34221740)
Vrbo did not provide me with a better experience. I rented a place last Christmas which looked nice going by the pictures in the listing. But when we got there it turned out to be a complete dump. It was so bad we didn’t stay and went straight to a hotel. Of course I contacted both the host and VRBO. The host never responded and the Vrbo representatives just shrugged their shoulders and said it was up to me to work it out with the host. Needless to say that will be the last time I use vrbo, Airbnb or any service like it.
Re:Things to argue about over the holidays instead of politics on Saturday December 24, 2022 @08:30AM (#34116608)
I don’t think it’s being nit-picky at all. The first thing that struck me reading the list was how intensely political it was.
I’m curious are all these companies going to cover the costs of setting up and maintaining home offices?
I had disabled it as well, but just checked and it was re-enabled.
Re:First person receives Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine in UK on Tuesday December 08, 2020 @09:45AM (#25345771)
"Wouldn't it make more sense to give this to people who are most at risk of spreading it, not dying from it?"

It wouldn't make any sense at all. The reason is that not only do older people have a greater risk of dying from Covid, they also have a much higher risk of being hospitalized[1], and remember the justification for the extreme measures we've taken and continue to take is the fear we will overwhelm our health care systems.

Re:How to manage HTML DOM with vanilla JavaScript only? on Thursday April 02, 2020 @10:14AM (#22759170)
ele.classList.toggle('class-name');

That seems really useful, and I had no idea it existed.

I switched over to Firefox when I read that Chrome was limiting the functionality of ad block extensions and it's been a fantastic browser so far.
You can import those into firefox by going to options -> privacy and security -> saved logins and click on import. I just did it yesterday and it worked well.
I use warm soapy water to clean my cast iron pan and I haven't noticed the seasoning being affected.
Re:Why I Quit Google to Work for Myself on Wednesday February 28, 2018 @01:52PM (#16485593)
The google promotion process sounds about as horrendous as their hiring process.
Re:Jack in the Box CEO reconsiders automation, kiosks on Wednesday January 10, 2018 @09:46AM (#16115219)
The other problem is that the 10,000 cashiers likely won't be qualified to fill the 1,000 maintenance/programming positions.
What a very well executed fun game. And it performs extremely well on my lap top. Great job!
Re:Front-end Microservices at HelloFresh on Saturday October 28, 2017 @02:52PM (#15576251)
I couldn't agree more. I can't understand the desire to needlessly complicate applications, what ever happened to KISS and YAGNI.
Re:How I got to 200 productive hours a month on Friday September 22, 2017 @09:37AM (#15312027)
That was my first thought too. Maybe it works for some people but I think I would burn myself out if I was putting in 200 hours of work each month for an extended period of time.
When I see posts in my facebook feed that say unfriend me if you believe x, I always unfriend them even if I don't believe x. If you are not tolerant of different points of view I really don't want to be your friend.
Re:Is the open office layout dead? on Monday August 21, 2017 @11:17AM (#15065170)
I left my last company in large part because there was no designated desks. Even worse, the office was overcrowded and some days I wouldn't be able to find a seat at all. Honestly, to me, it's insulting that a company would not value it's employees enough to provide them with the most basic tools like a desk.
Re:Dragula: Drag and drop so simple it hurts on Friday February 05, 2016 @10:52AM (#11042169)
I think that is a very good thing, I want to know about these useful projects

"the little fact that people usually miss is that repeat accuracy is a very important factor in reducing part and product failure so betting on robots means that you get a much more reliable and consistent product out the door saving you a fortune in re-work and warranty claims"

That is a very good point, the other factor is that robots can collect massive amounts of data faster and more accurately than their human counter parts.

Spotify has a web player as well
Re:The microservices cargo cult on Tuesday October 06, 2015 @11:05AM (#10339341)
"As with everything, there are advantages and disadvantages"

The author focuses on microservices, however, I think there is a larger point to be made. It is not that some particular architectural pattern is bad or good, it's that when you don't fully consider the requirements of your application and apply some pattern or technology just because it's the hot item this week you are going to end up with problems. This has less to do with microservices, in my experience, and more to do with less technical managers making decisions for a project when they don't fully understand.

Re:Why I Defaulted on My Student Loans on Tuesday June 09, 2015 @12:11AM (#9684032)
"Of course the liberal arts faculty want you to keep buying into the failed state that is their department"

I think you hit the nail on the head here. I distinctly remember almost every intro class I took the professor would try to sell me on the fact that it would be the greatest degree ever. Unfortunately, while some areas of study may be interesting, they are not always a good ROI and I think that is what alot of college kids don't understand.

anecdotally, I work with a lot of Italians and they tell me the salary for developers in Italy is around 2k per month, though that still seems really low for a western country to me.
Re:Solved by Flexbox on Friday May 22, 2015 @01:34PM (#9589780)
Nice work, I'm just starting to learn about flex box, and this resource will come in handy for sure.
"On the global scale, more countries need to say "no" to keep the US government in check. It's what the founding fathers would have wanted"

I am very skeptical that any of the founding fathers would have wanted European countries restricting US trade. With that said, I agree that the Europeans should make a stand and not accept what they consider dangerous pesticides to be imported into the EU
