I've written such a guide: https://jlsksr.de/docs/isp-guide/

The official docs of the RIRs are "non-commercial guides for IPv6 allocation", too.

Earlier this week I’ve read a blog post from Andreas (@[email protected] on Mastodon) that thematizes the fact that mobile messenger apps like WhatsApp & Signal nowadays - in contrast to older desktop instant messengers like ICQ - completely lack the possibility for users to set their own status to be “offline”, “away”, “not available” or something like that and the disadvantages (e.g. for mental health) that come along with this.

(the blog post from Andreas: https://82mhz.net/posts/2023/11/why-whatsapp-is-making-me-an...)

And he’s right: If we don’t want to participate in instant messaging, all we can do on our smartphones is switching wifi- and mobile-data off completely, preventing us from e.g. surfing the world wide web on these devices at the same time. That’s bollocks, isn’t it?! Let us make instant messaging great again!

I have put together a feature request for Signal that I hereby publish for public review/ reuse/ boosting and whatever. If you like the idea, please request this feature from the Signal Foundation or your favourite messenger, whatever that is.. Let us boost this massively - to finally send hundreds or thousands of identical or similar feature request towards the Signal Foundation and other messenger developers.

Here’s the draft:

Feature Request - Status Options for Signal Messenger

Dear Signal Team,

I would like to propose the implementation of customizable status options, allowing users to set their availability as “Away,” “Not Available,” or “Offline.” This feature, common in traditional instant messenger software like ICQ, holds several benefits:

User Flexibility: Provides users with control over how they appear to contacts, offering flexibility in conveying their availability without sending explicit messages.

Enhanced Communication: Reduces miscommunication by allowing users to convey non-verbal cues about their activity or unavailability.

Mental Health Benefits: Alleviates the pressure to respond immediately, contributing to a healthier and more mindful use of the Signal platform.

Public Reputation Enhancement: Positions Signal as a user-centric platform, sparking positive discussions within the tech community and beyond. Public awareness generated through discussions about this feature can serve as effective marketing, drawing attention to Signal’s unique qualities.
(For the sake of transparency: I used ChatGPT to bootstrap this.)

If you like that idea, please boost it. Maybe we can make instant messaging great again!
