It's also on amazon https://www.amazon.com/Exploration-Map-Migrations-Encounters...

There is a kindle version (which would be closer to epub than pdf) but it just is even worse than a pdf and the authors also include the reason for that:

> Due to the complex integration of images and text, this DK eBook has been formatted to retain the design of the print edition. As a result, all elements are fixed in place, but can easily be enlarged by using the pinch-to-zoom function.

EPUB is simply not ready for complex layouts.

Just look at examples like this: https://www.google.de/books/edition/Exploration_Map_by_Map/s...

You will realize that saying "PDFs should be only for printing" is a vast oversimplifcation for the requirements people have for different kinds of documents.

slighlty disagree with this. A fixed page layout has it's own advantages. The reason we have more high quality pdf readers than epub readers is probrably connected to the format itself. PDF readers usally are more more feature complete when it comes to stuff like annotations too.

Games like Kerbal Space Programm and factorio exhibit a lot of the concepts from the original research agenda[^1] because they are "Dynamic Environments-To-Think-In"

This is a pretty good summary of the core concepts: http://www.math.toronto.edu/nhoell/10rules-of-studying.pdf

Socioeconomic factors are significant factors: http://www.apa.org/pi/ses/resources/publications/violence.as...

As a side note: You seem to agree with your parent poster since you mention “well-educated people” which are most likely richer.

Thats also true for anyone else who is not part of the media.

That does not lead to the conclusion that other sources are right.

The illustration looks like a 3x3 convolution too.

Text is, kind of, the only truly portable, multi-platform control/interface/thingy/
Another interesting problem would be the generation of filler pictures (I don't know the correct term). Normally there is a person who draws keyframes at a much lower framerate. Other animators then fill in the frames between to increase the framerate.

Using get() is just bad style and so is returning null where you could return Collections.emptyList().

tl;dr: use map, orElseGet, orElse

Am I the only one who thinks that the margins of the right one are far worse? They almost negate the better structure.

But the recipe is the solution, the finely crafted source code, that we have to deploy. Cooking may be more similar to DevOps than software engineering.

Or it could be a coincidence since the number of test subjects was 1.

I like how the examine.com article sums it up:

> Although 'natural' (non-supplemental) methods of increasing testosterone are pretty weak and unlikely to build muscle mass, they tend to be related to pro-sexual effects (particularly libido) and exerting dominance

This does not explain the differences between man and woman. Especially because infection chances are higher for women. Assuming that males and females have the same number of average sexuall contacts.
Re:The Rise and Fall of the Lone Game Developer on Tuesday January 13, 2015 @02:34PM (#8881980)
Tell me if I missed it, but the chance to make a living as an independent game has increased, didn't? Companies get as big as their market will allow it. Saying no one can make a living from games anymore because of the big companies is like saying there can be no more start-ups because of Google and Facebook.

The gaming market is big and fast. It's fine if you don't want to run anymore but there are a lot more other people in the race who have a chance of seeing the finishing line.

> Let me acknowledge the ways our experiment already fails to line up with the study. First, we were in a bar, not a lab. Second, we weren’t strangers. Not only that, but I see now that one neither suggests nor agrees to try an experiment designed to create romantic love if one isn’t open to this happening.

Her story is just an illustration to the research paper she linked to. Please stay away from commenting if you didn't read the article.

Correct me if I am wrong but the statement "game’s audiovisual content is primarily stored on the developer’s server and not in the client" is not true for any mmo.

3D models and audio are saved to the clients disk. It's the state of the persistent world that is stored on the server.

Is it just me or do these look a bit uncanny?

There are many threads here discussing the influence of genetic factors but this is not what the article is about. Genetic factors are not mentioned in the article. One of the last paragraphs states other possible factors explicitly:

> Her next step is to find out what factors contribute to being an expert on an instrument, playing field, in the classroom or at work. She hopes to investigate such factors as basic abilities, age when starting to learn the skill, confidence, positive or negative feedback, self-motivation and the ability to take risks.

I think the whole nature vs nurture discussion in relation to intellectual aptitude is shaped to much by peoples own biases which leads them to ignore the overwhelming evidence for the importance of nurture/culture/eduction/...

Maybe it's easier to believe some people are born smart.

Re:Why No One Uses Functional Languages (1998) [pdf] on Thursday July 24, 2014 @09:06PM (#8083299)
Switching to FP is a bit like switching to Dvorak: the cost of switching are still to high to justify the effort.
Can I host a Flock server and charge money for it myself? Many people may not like having to sync their data to servers in the USA, even if the data is encrypted.
