For what it's worth; since the Steam Deck came out the vast majority of my gaming library has become playable on my Linux desktop. The Windows partition was removed shortly after I got a Deck and realised Valve have done such an incredible job with Proton to make games playable on Linux. With my library of games, at least, I've not had any major issues that linger in the memory.

Re:HashiCorp silently amend Terraform Registry TOS on Thursday August 31, 2023 @11:23AM (#37338651)
I've seen a lot about OpenTF and I applaud the (very large) effort to get a viable alternative in place in short order. Is anyone aware of corresponding projects for other tools in the HashiCorp suite?
I can understand that reasoning, and it does make sense to me too, but only if all the money goes to the park. Ideally then even only for successful applications.
Am I understanding this correctly: you need to pay for a permit for hiking in some places in the USA, and it's a lottery so you might not even be able to go once you've paid the money?

4th line in the article, this particular service is indeed purchasable for a one time fee.

My circle also just use "code" as far as I'm aware, though I tend to think of it as a definition instead. Template would also fit but you can use templates within Terraform so that could be confusing.
Personally I'm glad that companies are starting to not ship new cables with phones and would like to see it extended to other rechargables. I've thrown out so many micro-USB cables over the last few years and I still have them all over the place.

They specifically mention rust based backends for curl where the author of curl was funded to integrate as a starting point. I don't see any mention of funding being exclusively for organisations other than the author(s)?
I think it's a fairly large assumption to make that they all voted for him specifically. I don't think it's too crazy (given he won <50% of the popular vote in the 2016 primaries) to assume a large number of those voters voted "Not Democrat" or voted Republican instead of voting Trump specifically.

At the top right (near the "export" button) is a toggle to go between 3D and 2D.
It lets you use keyboard keys to move the cursor.

Being able to see the random seed used in the console and use it in the hash is a nice touch. I found a few large ones and one with a single path between two points (1592751582695)

> So, I forgive myself but still cringe hard whenever I remember it.

This has actually resonated with me as advice in its own right. I have wasted a lot of time worrying about past mistakes that I have made, wishing I could change the past etc. I'm not so bad for it now, but still struggle sometimes and worry myself with what people think of me now remembering what drunk (and sober) me did at university 10 years ago (and at other times in my life). This line has helped reframe it a bit in my mind: it's ok to still cringe at how I behaved and forgive myself for it - the former does not rule out the latter.

git blame suggests the change was made 15 months ago, though that doesn't take it to account time to publish. Which I guess just goes to show that it can be tough to find information on the docs, despite them been relatively decent as far as docs go (in my opinion).
Not sure where you are or why you experience this - I've made £300+ payments on my phone for sure (car service) and I think I might have done one close to £1000 at one point.
The "Teacher Effects" paper is demonstrating that the value add to student achievment is likely noise and not representative of the teachers doing a better job.

The "Parachutes" paper is demonstrating that parachutes make no difference when used out of a stationary grounded plane.

I think the point is that both papers are demonstrating that the numbers alone don't tell the full story.

Re:Apple Developer Documentation Is Missing on Monday October 28, 2019 @09:59AM (#21377031)
And the author acknowledges that those individuals are not the problem.

> the problem is not individual engineers — who are not responsible for writing docs; that is the responsibility of dedicated coumentation teams. But that does not make it any less a failure of Apple’s engineering organization.

Yes they can. It means they can't sure you for not paying though.

Re:Apple introduces 8-core MacBook Pro on Wednesday May 22, 2019 @06:46AM (#19979760)
Am I reading this update correctly? Is it now impossible to get a new Apple Laptop < 15" with 16GB of RAM?

Looks like a Matebook X Pro next time for me, or an XPS. Thankfully my '14 MBP runs beautifully still.

On Android:

Play Store > Menu > Subscriptions > select subscription > Cancel Subscription

Seems pretty similar to me.

Get where you're coming from, but I don't think they're entirely wrong. Whilst you can't buy Photoshop once now (your point), there are plenty of models where the choice is still there. Netflix and Spotify both have one-off purchase equivalents. You can still buy Jira as a one off purchase instead of SaaS.
Re:Build a 100% Serverless Website with AWS in 7 Easy Steps on Thursday October 25, 2018 @12:23PM (#18302122)
Why spend $5 when you could spend $1? I've got a site running without using servers and it basically costs the R53 hosted zone cost as it's very low traffic. No servers to configure, no residential connection to potentially fall over, high durability. Why wouldn't I use it?

Different use cases warrant different solutions.
