Re:Ronda Rousey fights like a statistical outlier on Sunday August 02, 2015 @05:54PM (#9992636)
Correct. She beat Carano and eventually the league (Strikeforce) went out of business and got bought by the UFC. The UFC absorbed all fighter contracts. There is no 145 womens division so she had to cut to 135 or leave. She decided to leave. Now she is the 145 champion of Invicta (an all womens league) that is basically owned by the UFC now as well.

If shes smart and wants a massive payday she will cut to 135 for the Rousey fight.

Its probably not a good practice but I assume every tech-minded 20-something male is a libertarian until told otherwise. Especially if they are working in SV.
It really shows the naivety of some of these marketplace users. This is how the "real" drug game works with people getting scammed and robbed everyday. Its not somehow different because its online.
Re:Results of the 2015 Soylent Eaters Survey on Thursday February 26, 2015 @05:27PM (#9115996)
Soylent reduces the consumption of food to a task to complete instead of an experience. The tagline on their homepage even reads "what if you never had to worry about food again?". Soylent is a solution for the type of person that doesnt value the ritual of food prep and consumption and Id be willing to bet that demographic is the young, tech-savy male. Women are much more likely to bond over food experience with friends and loved ones (ie. brunch) at any age.

Soylent is a tech product with standard early adopters of tech guys.

Re:Early exposure 'cuts peanut allergy' by over 80% on Tuesday February 24, 2015 @12:53PM (#9102256)
I lived with a guy from France a few years ago and he absolutely hated peanut butter and couldnt figure out why we all ate it so much. Had no problem adjusting to pepperoni cheese steaks though!

dat typo.
Ill never understand the "allure" of living in the burbs other than having space. Cookie cutter houses in cookie cutter developments separated by long stretches of mini-highways and strip malls. Everything is brand new and completely sterile.
Looks good man. Telling your story through some high quality photos and a video would really go far in validating your USP and pricing. If I were in the market for something like this that is the story I would want to support.

Re:How to Crack the Instagram Engagement Code on Wednesday September 25, 2013 @10:06AM (#6444623)
Its social sharing stripped down to what most people are really looking for... pictures. I have a small business making and selling handmade items and Instagram is my lifeblood. Its how I advertise my work, gain followers which do translate to other channels, and most important of all make sales.
talk about an interesting start-up model...

> The idea that "I don't experience privilege and I know this because I am not to blame for anything that happened before my existence,"

This has come up so much in this thread its almost baffling. Newsflash: If you are apart of the majority demographic on this website (18-35, upper middle class educated white male) you live the privilege EVERYDAY. Of course you arent conscious of it because it exists in your favor.

Men have had the upper hand since the dawn of existence and still have the upper hand in basically every society in the world.
Re:Ask HN: What one thing would you tell your younger self? on Wednesday July 18, 2012 @05:13PM (#4263024)
Dont be a fucking idiot and coast through college. Dont drop out of computer science because youre a lazy piece of shit.
Setting regulations you want your own community to abide by is fine and dandy. That sounds like what they are doing. The minute you try to expand those on everyone else is when you need to shut the fuck up. Just stay away from that line ultra-orthodox jews and you will be fine.
Look up the Eric Meyer CSS reset. It saves tons of time with cross-browser compatibility issues straight from the beginning.
Re:I Want To Teach Web Design For Free on Thursday July 14, 2011 @09:49AM (#2762987)
Its awesome that you would take the time out to set up some free classes but I think you would need to move some things around in this syllabus.

Basics of Graphic Design - Great starting point. No arguments here.

Learning HTML (html5) only - I dont agree with this. HTML5 is not that widely adopted yet to be a sole basis of HTML learning. It often still requires JS just to make it render correctly across all browsers. Using the HTML5 doctype and teaching HTML5 as what-is-to-come is great, but it shouldnt be the basis. Especially if you are looking to teach cross-browser compatibility and best practices.

Javascript/JQuery - Sounds about right.

Databases / MVC / RoR - This is where you kind of blur the line between teaching "Web Design" and "Web Development". This should be an optional split. If you want to continue learning the development side you go this route, if they want to stay design side, go a different route. There is really no reason for a designer to know about how MVC works.

Deployment - The basics of deployment would be great for everyone but advanced RoR, Django style deployments shouldnt be apart of a normal course.

Live CD's are a great option to test the waters. You wont be too out of place since the desktop GUI's are very similar to a Windows machine. What seperates the men from the boys is working on your system through the command line interface (terminal). This is the essence of any Linux machine. Read some beginner tutorials on the Linux filesystem and your basic terminal commands.

You will learn it just like any other system, taking it one step at a time. Make it a goal to learn how to complete all the tasks you would do through a GUI on the command line. Create, view, edit, delete files and directories. Unpack, compile and install programs. Run systems updates. Etc.. etc..

Just take it a step at a time. Google everything and you will be fine.

I cant picture how the end result will look, but a decent idea to start with. If I randomly came across this I would at least spend some time checking it out.

Re:Ask HN: Review my Startup - http://Cardnap.com on Tuesday April 12, 2011 @10:54AM (#2437435)
Pretty cool idea. Nice design! I may be nitpicking but on the about us page you have "Shopping's fun, but it could be funner.."

Technically "funner" isnt a word. But since the branding of your product seems to play towards younger people you can probably get away with it.

Im basically in the same boat as you "jack of all trades master of none" and decided I want to go further into back-end programming. I started working on a HN "clone" using Codeigniter (with freely available online tutorials). I opted to stick with PHP for now because I am already familiar with it to a degree and its ease of implementation. I really just wanted to get down to work and be able to test it using my local dev environment and my simple shared hosting account. I decided to stay away from RoR / Python/Django for now just because it would mean learning new syntax on top of learning how to use MVC. Once Im finished with this I plan on venturing out from PHP.

this is actually true. dribbble users are the who's who of the web design world. doesnt mean there isnt room for other invite design communities though.
Awesome post.I love reading these stories. Very interested in the technical details followup.

Ask HN: Question on Princples of DRY Programming

Basically in the past Ive been a mostly front-end design/dev guy and Im making the leap into back-end. Right now Im working in the Codeigniter framework and my first project is coming along swimmingly. Im noticing that in my controllers I seem to be repeating some lines of code. Mostly related to determining if a user is logged in and serving them the proper views. Is that considered bad...
