Re:Where to hack if you don't like coffee? (in SF) on Sunday July 29, 2012 @08:09PM (#4310274)
What are some places in SF that are open later than 8-9pm? Coffee shops or similar venues work- I just lose some of my momentum after heading back home if I still have work to do in the evening.

Ask HN: Rate my Kickstarter project - KOTHpoker

So my team and I have been bootstrapping the development of our site http://kothpoker.com and we decided that Kickstarter would be the best way to raise a small amount of funding. Any advice/comments/concerns are greatly appreciated! Here's the link- http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/kothpoker/king-of-the-hill-poker-kothpoker

Neat. I've been using http://instadj.com which has a single search engine rather than one for artists and individual songs.

Ask HN: SF-based startup looking for kickstarter advice

Hey guys, my team and I are planning to launch a kickstarter project for an iPhone app next week. We've been reading everything we can get our hands on for the past six weeks and are almost done with our video. At this point I'd like to talk to some people who have actually had experience getting funding through kickstarter, and would be more than happy to meet for coffee somewhere in the city....

Re:What colleges have startup mentality? on Wednesday May 02, 2012 @05:27PM (#3921288)
You could go to the University of San Francisco - they have an Entrepreneurship program (essentially a BA with startup-related requirements). The great thing is that you'll be a short bus ride from a ton of startup stuff if you're willing to seek it out. That's why I chose here and don't regret it at all.
Re:Two Plus Two Forums Hacked on Friday April 27, 2012 @02:19PM (#3900372)
As a large number of 2+2'ers use the same username/password combo for real money poker sites, this is a fairly big deal. A few years ago it seemed like a ton of the high stakes guys' AIM screen names were being hacked, in order to solicit loans from their friends. Security has been a big problem in the online poker community in general, as these two issues are insignificant compared to both UltimateBet's superuser scandal and the results of Black Friday.
Re:A quick guide to our current privacy threats on Tuesday April 24, 2012 @03:01PM (#3885748)
A common maxim I've heard involving bootstrapped startups is that if you don't have the cash to get things done conventionally, you'll be more creative in solving problems that money would've been able to.

So when it comes to governmental privacy threats, I think the same ought to hold true- we don't have the power to stop them, therefore we ought to find creative solutions. I don't know where to start, but a longterm solution in my mind involves more than articles on the Reddit front page. How can we indefinitely protect our right to use the internet in the ways that we choose?

I'd imagine that many HN readers intend to use money from an exit to fund their life after "retirement".

Hi there, I'm interested. Emailed you.
Re:Ask HN: What Should I Focus on Learning Over the Summer? on Thursday April 19, 2012 @09:16PM (#3866055)
I'll second this. Udacity has the best courses I've taken for CS stuff.
Re:97%ers fighting back :) on Monday April 16, 2012 @09:58PM (#3850616)
I got rejected, I'm close, I'll go. Just sent you an email!
Re:Ask HN: Rejected from YC? Who are you? on Monday April 16, 2012 @07:48PM (#3850123)
I'm building http://moodstir.com and http://kothpoker.com. If the idea's shortcomings weren't the reason I was rejected, it was likely because I'm currently a solo founder. It seems like there are a lot of awesome teams applying and that alone is hard to compete with.

I would be happy to meet up in SF with fellow failed YC S12'ers.

Yeah, I just got it.
I didn't get in. Congrats to those who got invites!

SEEKING FREELANCER - San Francisco

I contracted the creation of http://moodstir.com, which is twitter for emotion. I'd like to add a twitter login among other things to the site. If the project seems interesting, or you want to hear more and would consider working on the project, I want to hear from you- please contact [email protected]

SEEKING FREELANCER - San Francisco

We are a four man online poker startup (http://kothpoker.com) focusing on heads up (1-on-1) play. We're looking to get into the real money market, which is beginning to become regulated in the United States this year.

At this time we're looking for both a graphic designer and an iOS/front-end developer.

Requirements for front-end stuff:

-Knows how to safely utilize git within a team -Open-source friendly/proud of your code, shares code on Github or other website that we can check out -Moderately active within the dev community, has an SO profile -Proven experience with developing and deploying native (nothing in a UIWebView) iOS applications—can provide links to apps in the store -Enough server-side experience to be able to investigate and comprehend minor API issues if and when they occur

Requirements for graphic design position:

-A user experience and user interface designer in one—mere graphic designers don't belong making user interfaces. It needs to be a person who can also think in terms of movement and interaction. The equivalent of needing to know jQuery as well for web application UIs.

We're looking to hire someone interested in poker, and initially the compensation would be largely for equity. If you're interested please email [email protected]

If anything it's going to draw more attention to things in SV, wouldn't you think? A number of people I know had only heard of the actual Jersey Shore location before the show got big, but largely have ignored the stereotype the show provides while learning a decent amount about the area on their own.

Perhaps my experience isn't an accurate depiction of the public's perception of the New Jersey coastline, but I agree that this show is an argument for how established SV has become.

I got past that and into the game but I can't get my character to move, tried on Chrome and Safari.
Re:Ask HN: should I take a gap year? on Friday March 23, 2012 @06:39PM (#3747716)
I took a gap year after high school, and am taking a leave of absence in the midst of my junior year in college- both experiences have taught me more about the world and myself than my time formal education ever has. I'd recommend the year off if at all possible.
I'm beginning to learn programming this year and have tackled a number of tutorials- Udacity's CS101 has been far and away the most helpful. This is the best format in my opinion- extremely short videos and regular quizzes with more complex homework problems at the end of each unit.
Agreed. I'm intrigued but there's absolutely nothing aside from the little visual about how Bloc works.
Re:Ask HN: Who else keeps a secret diary of startup ideas? on Monday February 06, 2012 @06:57PM (#3559798)
I use SimpleNote on my iPhone. I have probably 1200 ideas in it, with maybe 1/3 of them being specific startup concepts. Others are just things I've written down to help piece together my worldview; contradictions I may have unearthed or new ways to think about a certain thing I previously had a more foggy understanding of.
Re:The Emerging Wisdom Revolution on Monday February 06, 2012 @03:18AM (#3556654)
True, if there's any way to game the system or brute force your reputation, it's going to cause problems. Digg had issues with power users getting paid to post, and even news aggregators like Reddit and HN can be abused if people have their friends upvote submissions. People like sharing things they find interesting/important or have an emotional response to, as twitter has proven.

If you search a business' name on twitter you'll get some sort of consensus on what people think about it. This stuff isn't aggregated in a way that is really helpful, though. That's is what my startup is trying to solve - http://moodstir.com. When a company like Netflix pisses off its customers and they are willing to tweet about it, others considering using the service ought to be able to find out the general emotional stance customers have towards the service.

Re:Ask HN: My Startup didn't go viral- what now? on Tuesday January 31, 2012 @05:46AM (#3532694)
Thanks for the response! Submit is a pretty emotionless word- true. Twitter login is a good idea; icons to depict moods is something we have talked about but aren't sure if users will know exactly what emotion is related to a certain face. I remember threewords.me and loved the idea- I appreciate the links.
Re:Ask HN: My Startup didn't go viral- what now? on Tuesday January 31, 2012 @05:41AM (#3532678)
I'm envisioning it to be used for this purpose as a sort of review site. Having the "collective emotional consensus" of a restaurant down the street might give you a better idea of whether it's worth trying out than seeing 3.5/5 stars on Yelp will. Showing legislators a "collective emotional consensus" of peoples' moods towards the "SOPA" keyword would be interesting as well.
Re:Ask HN: My Startup didn't go viral- what now? on Tuesday January 31, 2012 @05:28AM (#3532643)
Say you had a great experience at a coffee shop- you post [satisfied] towards [Velo Rouge Cafe]. If enough people do this, anyone who wants a quick snapshot of what people have experienced in Velo Rouge might just search for them on Moodstir. If there are a lot of [satisfied] emotions posted, or a lot of [frustrated] ones, it imply certain things about the cafe. Different than a Yelp review site, in that it takes the aggregate feelings of all users, rather than a simple X/5 star system, which is a more limited glimpse into peoples' experiences.
