So he fosters competence with his incompetence? Seems like it would work just as well without him except for marketing. I'm impressed with Tesla and SpaceX as a whole, but from what I've heard, he hasn't been heavily involved with day to day decisions for more than a decade. From my perspective, his role is to be a hype man that consistently over promises and under delivers.
Re:Google Fiber is coming to Las Vegas on Wednesday January 22, 2025 @10:52PM (#42800549)
They just raised the price on my fixed for life deal from Century Link. If you look back, there's nothing in the documentation/terms that actually claimed it was for life. Super shady on their end and I'm going to switch to Google Fiber once they're finished installing it in my neighborhood (they're currently in the installation process)
Now that's a take I've never heard before. It'd be interesting to have an opt-in for sharing your medical history with entities, but there is no way in hell I'd be sharing information that is so easily weaponized against me.

I have this one on my list but haven't gotten around to watching it yet. Would you recommend?
I haven’t worked at sendgrid in years but when I was there they took spam reports very seriously and even a few reports would negatively affect the senders reputation.
Source? This would be such an elegant solution to a massive engineering problem.
Re:How the Apple AirTag became a stalker’s gift on Monday September 05, 2022 @10:45AM (#32724875)
Plenty of motorcycle gps trackers have battery life in the year range. You don’t need it to send live location data, just a ping every few minutes
Re:How the Apple AirTag became a stalker’s gift on Monday September 05, 2022 @10:38AM (#32724799)
I don’t see how your solution really fixes anything as the device would still have to be found for there to be any consequences. It seems like it might help with the blatant attempts described in the article where an AirTag was slipped into someone’s pocket, but I would probably never find a well hidden device glued to my car. I hope you do find a good solution though because I don’t want to pay a monthly subscription for a gps tracker for theft protection on my motorcycle. It would be nice to just be able to drop in a tile or AirTag and forget about it until I needed jt
Could it simply be that a lot of advertisers have enough data about you to link your phone ip to your phone number?
Are there any demographics information about the people who spend a lot of money on microtransactions? There’s obviously a decent chunk of the population who does but Im not aware of anyone in my circles with this habit. Is it mostly children?

Also a little bit of this one: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bishop_Castle
Probably not as much as you'd think. Ammonia is used as a refrigerant in a closed-loop system. You'll eventually have some leaks and have to recharge the system, but the ammonia isn't a consumable item in this process.

I had one a few weeks ago for the first time in probably a decade. It was so much fun that we're going to try to organize them more frequently.
I agree for internal meeting, but in my industry where external meetings are a huge part of my job, it's meant way less driving to meetings for me which has been a huge boost to my productivity levels.
My experience with android has been the opposite. I’ve never had an android phone that lasted more than 2 years without becoming frustratingly slow whereas my iPhone 8 still runs as well as the day I got it. All anecdotal but I stick with what works for me
Just because it's legal doesn't make it ethical
A tangentially related development recently has been peroxide generators to put inside buildings to generate enough hydrogen peroxide to sterilize the air/surfaces without being a health hazard. I've recently had a local school district request that we analyze these devices as an option for COVID mitigation: https://synexis.com/science/reports-data/
This is a perfect example of why our current media feels so exhausting. There's so many conflicting viewpoints and studies that all seem reasonable.
Re:Modular Homes for Under $50k on Tuesday June 29, 2021 @11:43PM (#27684621)
I really want one of these and I don't know why. I'm struggling to come up with uses for this other than for AirBNB style short term rental places or pre-planned communities for helping homeless people get back on their feet or something. Doesn't seem as portable as a mobile home, and doesn't really have enough of a rustic look for me to want to consider this as a cabin.

I feel like I'm missing a big use case here, but unless I planned to live in this full time, what are the benefits over buying a sprinter van or something.

I disagree. I've had extensive experience with both and ended up settling with IOS because of the "privacy", and longevity. Might have gotten better since my last experiences with android, but I'm still rocking an iPhone 8 which does more than enough for my needs, and my wife is still using an iPhone 6s which they announced will be getting the latest upgrade this year (7 years old now).

I know you can mess around with custom ROMs and all that to get more life out of Android phones, but now that I work full time I just don't really have the patience to be constantly tweaking things to have my phone work pretty well. It's actually kind of weird that I'm in this position because I used to be all about customization and huge into the Jailbreak/Rooting scenes.

Yep! I might have been a little pedantic. I've been running a content blocker + PiHole for a while now with decent results. I really wish that there was a system wide content blocker without requiring a jailbreak.
Re:Plover is a free, open-source stenography engine on Wednesday June 23, 2021 @10:38PM (#27613244)
I might be immature, but I originally pronounced it in my head as P-Lover...
I assume he's on IOS which does not support uBlock.
Re:U.S. has almost 500k job openings in cybersecurity on Thursday May 20, 2021 @01:33PM (#27224289)
Would that task keep you interested for many years? A lot of the people I know in Aerospace end up working on a single component of a larger system for so long that they lose interest and burn out. It's a very high paying job for mostly very boring work. There are always exceptions though.
How are they supposed to just increase production right now? There's silicon shortages across most industries. In theory, lowering demand by limiting crypto mining efficiency should help give more people access to these cards.
I like how much it sounds like futuristic science fiction technology!
Re:Blender 2.92 on Friday February 26, 2021 @12:33PM (#26277390)
I hate what Autodesk has become. I'm in the A&E industry and Revit has become a monstrosity of a monopoly. The industry as a whole has seen decent revenue growth, but almost no profit because Autodesk is siphoning it all into their coffers [1]. I wouldn't mind too much, but you don't really get any benefit from their new subscription model. They release very few new features with every release and there's bugs in their software I've been dealing with since 2016. There are some software alternatives but it's very difficult to get a whole design team on board with trying something new.

Thank you for posting this. I've been meaning to get back into programming for fun recently but have been struggling to find something I wanted to work on.
Re:I no longer trust The Great Suspender on Wednesday January 20, 2021 @12:34PM (#25849238)
I was just thinking about something similar. It would be nice if at a minimum, we could put together a list of compromised extensions. I feel like I've seen quite a few of these reports recently
Any references on the Pope blessing a wafer? I really want to see this but can't find it
