Re:The field of longevity biotech is a mess on Saturday December 04, 2021 @12:47PM (#29442621)
It's also a factual error. There have been longevity genes discovered. Cynthia Kenyon famously doubled the lifespan of a C. Elegans by mutating daf-2: https://www.nature.com/articles/366461a0
Re:Duff’s Device in 2021 on Thursday November 18, 2021 @09:29PM (#29273118)
In the final form of Duff's device, isn't the loop control still executed each time, but in the do/while statement instead of the for loop?
Re:Organ transplant patients may not get dementia on Wednesday November 03, 2021 @11:30AM (#29096050)
Isn't Rapamycin generally used as part of an immunosuppressant cocktail for organ transplants?

Curious why that isn't mentioned in the article as a contributing factor.

Re:How to Start a Biotech Company on a Budget on Sunday January 24, 2021 @10:27AM (#25892779)
Do you see any pure software niches, or is everything right now heavily involved with hardware/wetware?
Re:Neuralink Progress Update [video] on Friday August 28, 2020 @09:31PM (#24312475)
How do they decide where to place the electrodes?

And how do they keep them fixed in the right position?

This is very cool, but what is the use case?
Re:Ask HN: Making a mobile app as a back-end developer? on Monday December 30, 2019 @06:18PM (#21917590)
Take a look at expo. Rapid development with a minimum amount of domain specific setup knowledge.
Re:Save .org on Friday November 22, 2019 @11:29PM (#21612473)
Is it okay for startups not based in the `British Indian Ocean Territory` to use `.io` for their domain?
Re:The Next 50 Years of Databases (2015) on Tuesday November 12, 2019 @12:12AM (#21511696)
I think we want a precise computer language, but with a code completion/suggestion good enough to make transitioning from natural language trivial.
Re:Edward Snowden says he would like to return home on Monday September 16, 2019 @12:21PM (#20985666)
The plausibility of a fair trail in the shadow of the Assange debacle is 0.
Re:A New Way of Voting That Makes Zealotry Expensive on Friday May 03, 2019 @12:09PM (#19819630)
This can be gamed easily by running N-1 clones of any given candidate, where N is the total number of votes allotted.
Re:Boston Dynamics’ new robot stacks boxes [video] on Friday March 29, 2019 @07:16PM (#19526418)
Seems like it wouldn't be too hard to just put a cover over the batteries entire range of motion.
Re:Ten days in Shenzhen on Monday January 29, 2018 @10:00PM (#16262570)
There no support for the Communist Government, only a vibrant tech community.
Re:The Tax Sleuth Who Took Down a Drug Lord on Friday December 25, 2015 @08:02PM (#10792869)
This guy isn't unsung, he's no hero. Heros have just causes.

He's an enthusiastic, misguided, bureacratic cog.

Re:Facebook plots first steps into healthcare on Friday October 03, 2014 @05:46AM (#8404845)
There seem to be a lot of private enterprise that competes and prospers even when there is a large state presence. FedEx is an example that comes to mind.

"This is a natural fit for the US, where the business of healthcare happens much closer to (and often involves) the end consumer."

Seems true, but would add that it could go a whole lot closer. The typical consumer is generally insulated by insurance being packaged into employment deals and a near universal culture of prepay masquerading as 'insurance.'

good point. I hear that a some of the pornography sites are charging the bitcoin users more to make if for the non recurring payment style.
Re:Apple Acquires Rapid-Fire Camera App Developer SnappyLabs on Saturday January 04, 2014 @03:57PM (#7012893)
Agree with your general thesis, but it seems that the tech is for the iPhone specifically, not cameras in general.
Re:Bitcoin approaching $1000 on Tuesday November 26, 2013 @10:14PM (#6806069)
These uses form a negligible amount of the value of Gold, presently and historically.

Re:How Weev's prosecutors are making up the rules on Saturday September 21, 2013 @06:36PM (#6424891)
Point taken, intent does matter. But there is a large difference between taking the information you used to the black market and taking it to a media organization.

e.g. Homakov's hack of github didn't deserve jail time as it was for publicity, not malevolance.

Re:How Weev's prosecutors are making up the rules on Saturday September 21, 2013 @06:18PM (#6424826)
they returned the http code 200. that means good to go. there is another code for access forbidden.
Re:Dialing Back the Alarm on Climate Change on Sunday September 15, 2013 @03:36AM (#6388396)
I think he is quoting the experts in the field...
Checked out site, but they don't seem to be "up" - just requesting signups for a beta.
Assume you are referencing the flash and twitter crash? I always wondered why people never mention how fast it recovered... the ability to heal a market in seconds. The '87 crash was a cascade much more severe and actually involving the whole market that happened without HFT.

Also the incredible focus on these two events, considering all the other turmoil in the financial markets, has always struck me as a clear case of scapegoating with Luddite underpinnings. Pretty soon, we will all believe that the recession was caused by HFT's.

I'm not sure I understand what you are saying. Would you elaborate?
All comments so far are negative, but I fail to see how this video shows anything other than incredible engineering.

The negativity seems to be a result of previous bias.

Re:Calling All Hackers on Monday April 29, 2013 @02:26PM (#5627812)
Agreed. Happy to see this caused an eye roll in some one else.

Doing good, but misrepresenting the 'big issues' is not helpful. Too often good intentions substitute for good work.

One should care about the race or gender of someone, the goal should be to attract the most talent. Also, saying 'everyone can learn' may give a warm fuzzy feeling and make people think you are a good person, but it is most likely not true.

Pushing a round peg into a square hole is destructive both for the peg and the hole.
