I agree that some conduct guidelines are justified, but should be minimal. The feeling against them is due to overreach, where they stray away from codifying generally acceptable behaviour and move into territory that the general population would find incomprehensible, such as not being able to say that someone with the opposite opinion is wrong.

Wow.

A common enemy, often fictitious, or with enough fictitious components to its character to render it a travesty of reality.

Thanks for the list, she doesn’t recognise any of the sites listed there. Also she has burner/spam email addresses she uses for smaller/less reputable sites, this is the main email address so it must have come from a big, reputable site.

Ask HN: Reporting Phishing Attack

Hi HN, this one might be a bit mundane but I’d like to prevent others getting scammed. My girlfriend has just received a phishing email that contains all her contact details, and asks her to sign into (what appears to be) a fraudulent website to track an order that she has never placed. I suspect that this is related to the easyJet breach earlier this year, as there are relatively few potential...

It’s art.
I don’t, they can say anything posing as anyone and the general public will believe it, this is a genuine hazard. Seriously, if I were them I’d pull the plug until this is fixed.
This is nuts, Twitter is totally compromised and they haven’t pulled the plug. Not confidence inspiring.
Going against the grain here, yes, I would.

Professionally I haven’t been very involved in deployment, but my experience deploying personal projects to, and configuring, Linux servers has taught me that the process is confusing, poorly documented and difficult. Don’t get me wrong, it’s doable and I’ve done it (likely poorly), but after a day of stitching together steps from blogs and frequent back-tracking and starting from scratch, you have to wonder if there isn’t a more user-friendly way.

I’d hope that windows server offers this, though I don’t know that it does, as I haven’t much experience with it. As windows is considerably more GUI centric than Linux that could be a big plus for me personally. I’d certainly check it out, at least to compare the experience to Linux.

But currently, given that windows servers are not free, Linux wins hands down.

> And in terms of replicating, these are derived from stem cells.

All of everyone’s cells are derived from stem cells. The issue is still how prone to uncontrolled proliferation they are, not so much having a population of a particular cell type in the wrong place.

The main benefit is handling binding and state, and allowing you to easily break your application into a component hierarchy of reusable components. It also has an ecosystem that will let you find packages for most anything you want to do, probably in five different ways.

Exactly, punish the engineer for using mildly unflattering language, never mind that he was right and that hundreds of people have subsequently died. Mind boggling response, and as you have said indicative of the cultural issues that caused the crashes in the first place.

Would these be expected to change by country? I’m getting different results from grc for Facebook, Wikipedia and others in the UK, but the results are consistent between different connections. Results match for grc and paypal.
It’s just training an image labelling AI on a different, sensationalist dataset. It looks designed for media attention and nothing else. What value is there in this?
I’ve seen this before and I really have to wonder what the point is other than sensationalism. An image labelling AI will label images according to its training data. Yes, of course it will. This isn’t a psychopath AI and it doesn’t shed any light on anything, what’s the point?
The fastest way isn’t to eliminate the other possibilities, it’s to find a unique test for a that can’t be met by any of the others. Bear in mind that your list of alternative causes may be very long and each require large amounts of work to eliminate.

I too find it strange that multiple landers have been sent to mars since Viking, ostensibly looking for evidence of present or past life, and have yet have carried no tests for it. I find the best way to find something is to look for it.

It's indicative most of all that the author takes an extreme pride in whatever he takes to be his "intellect." Goliaths' waiting for their Davids.

Do you not see yourself in this paragraph?

Anyway, I’m sure French literature is a noble pursuit.

Re:What You Can't Say (2004) on Friday October 11, 2019 @08:50PM (#21229732)
Yes, I equate intelligence with reasoning. For me, and realistically most everyone else, intelligence is the ability to reason, formulate solutions to problems and to quickly grasp concepts.

There are a host of other skills that are worthwhile and desirable and whatever else, but why pretend that they are the same thing as intelligence?

I’m not sure I understand the relevance of your skeptics comment.

Edit: you added this since I wrote my reply:

> In fact one of the best qualities you can have as a scientist is to follow mundane proceedures without questioning a thing and regardless of the changing circumstances.

I’m afraid you now just sound like you have a chip on your shoulder.

Re:What You Can't Say (2004) on Friday October 11, 2019 @08:12PM (#21229532)
We can pretend to be outraged by it but he’s very likely right. We’ve arrived at a point where it’s unacceptable to say that people have different levels of ability or that some professions require more than others.

(And this comment didn’t go straight to the bottom this time, that’s a nice change.)

Re:What You Can't Say (2004) on Friday October 11, 2019 @08:00PM (#21229476)
It’s the most currently socially acceptable way of agreeing with the argument. Which is in itself a wonderful way of highlighting what you can and cannot say, not to mention the punishments doled out for doing so.
Re:Apple Removes HKmap.live from the App Store on Thursday October 10, 2019 @10:38AM (#21215008)
Your characterisation of the Chinese public does not make it seem more sympathetic, quite the reverse: it makes them seem petty and spiteful, lashing out at a population which is better educated and more prosperous than them, one unwilling to suffer under the yoke of the CCP as the majority have been indoctrinated to do.

Why not let Hong Kong be independent? What moral claim does mainland China have to the territory over the people who live there? If China is so superior and resents Hong Kong then they are better off without it.

Re:Cloudflare Network Performance Issues on Tuesday July 02, 2019 @09:53AM (#20334986)
Also getting this in the UK. Not completely down, bits and pieces of medium comes through but very slowly and incomplete. I’m also unable to access npm.
You’re not missing anything, its just bad reasoning.
Re:Language, trees, and geometry in neural networks on Friday June 07, 2019 @08:41PM (#20129842)
I’m impressed by the method of mapping higher dimensional vectors to a consistent tree representation, but I’m not sure what the take home point is after that. The BERT embeddings are (possibly randomly) branching structures? I’m only eyeballing figure 5 here, but the BERT embeddings only approximate the dependency parse tree to the same extent that the random trees do.
Re:Near-Eye Wavefront Emulating Display on Saturday February 23, 2019 @03:18PM (#19235256)
I imagine that it’s focal length. With current headsets you’re staring at a screen directly in front of your eyes, only giving the illusion of depth. This appears to be modulating the wavefront so that optically it’s similar to a scene that is actually x distance away from you. Your eyes can tell what distance you’re focusing at, so this should be significantly more immersive should anything come of it.

In other words, with this device, objects would actually be in the distance, rather than being smaller on a nearby screen.

> Good thing he isn't asking Apple to make only 4 inch phones.

> Phones bigger that that are grossly oversized and anti-ergonomic.

Looks like he is, actually.

You realise there is significant variation in the size of people’s hands? I consider a 4 inch phone so small as to be nearly unusable. Apple’s approach of having differently size phones for different people is the right one.
Re:Ask HN: Should sociopaths be banned from business/power? on Saturday January 12, 2019 @12:42PM (#18892289)
So if you saw your goldfish being clearly uncomfortable or in pain, would you have an emotional reaction to it, making you feel bad for it? That’s empathy. You don’t need to imagine the goldfish's daily routine to experience this. In the absence of this emotion, there is no incentive to perform the mechanistic actions that constitute “caring for” it.
Re:Ask HN: Should sociopaths be banned from business/power? on Saturday January 12, 2019 @12:04PM (#18892052)
> empathy has nothing to do with care

I find this a remarkable statement, what do you take empathy to be? Do you think that people can realistically care for others in a purely cognitive, non-emotional sense?

I agree. While I don’t know how big the problem is, my limited experience is that notability is applied unevenly, and tends to be levelled against articles that particular editors find boring/annoying, mostly as an excuse to remove them.
