Re:Ask HN: Inmigrate to USA, form LLC and work for myself? on Tuesday June 10, 2014 @04:13PM (#7875030)
Not likely... The process of sponsoring a visa applicant can be costly and must be completed by a us citizen. There are significant cost to this as well. If they find out, you will be blacklisted and never gain citizenship
Containers seem to be heading more in the direction of VMs. Which would compartmentalize the services of a given application, but then you might need a separate container for a given app. I don't know if you can completely get away from the problem of shipping code to new environments without configuration/customization.
Re:Ask HN: Success stories of older folks on Sunday June 08, 2014 @03:41PM (#7865632)
Most people achieve success well past 30, actually entrepreneurs over the age of 55 are more likely to be successful than those under 55.

The reason why there are stories about successful 20 year olds is because its so rare.

The average of millionaires is 63 and billionaires is 60.

Good luck getting a visa...
Re:Can good developers be good CEOs? on Saturday June 07, 2014 @02:52AM (#7861516)
What... the question was not "programmers that did well" it was "Can GOOD programmers be CEOs?" The ones that have made it big were mediocre at best....

Bill's OS was a mess... didn't write DOS, but "fixed" it... which was the most god awful mess ever to be loading on a box...

Facebook in the early years used to crash on a daily basis... I guess you don't remember that... My wall would disappear altogether sometimes... he didn't invent HipHop which is actually amazing...

there's 20 guys fresh off the boat that will take the job for zero equity and probably have more experience...
You just got out of college and you got some equity and you don't think its enough? Wow... If were the founder I'd wonder what a recent grad had to offer to get any equity at all... Even if you got 1% or 2% the company would have to be worth hundreds of millions for you to see big money... and if its going that good then option and stock grants will be available to good employees. Don't try to hit a home run on your first time at bat. If you don't strike out... you're doing better than most.

However, I think you're looking at this the wrong way. Most startups fail.. you should be angling for more base and not worry about the equity at this point... get the experience and add it to your portfolio and look to your next job when this company tanks

they can't...
SF is geographically unique as is NYC... as concentration of wealth focuses on such areas it has a exponential effect on value of goods and services in such an area. There is not much you can do about it.
God... I hope he doesn't teach them to code as horribly as show the in construction of Git...
Ok to answer your questions in order.

1. Any corporate structure will allow you to split evenly. 2. See #1 3. See #1

4. If you 1099 yourself you're defeating the purpose of the S-corp election... would prevents being taxed twice. You can either take periodic distributions or pay yourself as employees of the LLC. Either way you'll have to pay taxes

Re:Ask HN: Accept offer from startup accelerator? on Monday June 02, 2014 @02:33PM (#7835002)
Well... lets do the math... You have a valuation of 2-4x revenue. Sounds like a good deal just on those numbers alone... but if you need the money and they can offer you something you don't have like marketing assistance. Seems like the offer makes sense.

No way to really tell if you will ever get a better valuation since we don't know what you do and what your financials are like.

Money in the bank leads to more money in the bank...

Re:Ask HN: How can I find CTO? on Monday June 02, 2014 @03:41AM (#7832322)
I'd be careful with the word CTO... Unless you are designing something that could be patented... at the pre-start phase you need a good programmer...

If you understand a basic level of code. Then document what you want to do in plain language and find a guy that can give you a technical document or.. build a prototype with that information.

A prototype... is your proof of concept. Don't waste time and money on a product that has no traction... build quick, get it out there see what the feedback is like and then tweek it.

Re:Ask HN: FU Money: What is your number? on Saturday May 31, 2014 @10:48PM (#7827976)
$50M... that's 10M in spending cash, 40M in investments, and with a moderate rate of return I'm making $2.5-5M a year for the rest of my life...
