iTerm's ability to make "non-lion" fullscreen windows is worth a tremendous amount to me.

I'm jedediah on KGS, and would welcome any game, though I'm a meager ~20k, as I've just started playing.
Re:Hacker Monthly #2 is out on Wednesday June 30, 2010 @07:32PM (#1476546)
I love this, thanks! I do miss the epub version that was available with issue #1. I'm happy to even pay for it.
Draw a mockup on paper and figure out how you want your app to work. Once it's done, get the simplest case working in real software.

I find that by getting something simple working helps me keep motivation whilst going forward, even if the code is crappy. Conversely, I've started a non-trivial number of webapps by designing a DB schema and an application architecture, each of which left me burnt out before anything of value was even written.

What advantage does this give over the built in integration tests?
Re:Torvalds: git vs CVS on Friday April 16, 2010 @11:21PM (#1272550)
Terrible submodule support.
Re:Try our app (Flowdock, the team messenger) on Wednesday March 10, 2010 @01:13PM (#1181538)
Loved it when I tried it this morning, but the [apparent] overload of the servers led to my team dismissing it without a second thought.
Interesting how the reason that this bug is affecting the original poster is that a new version of the language is being used. The code can't be changed because "We have number_format in literally thousands of places across 50 or 60 separate products. Each of those changes will have to be coded, tested, written-off, released, tested by the clients since this is tax data and has to be precise for tax planning and retirement planning."

It seems to me that the entire process of testing and writing off is just as important when changing the target platform as it is when changing some of the API calls.

Settlers is last /decade/. Dominion is just last year.
No, as the article shows, the internet really needs to become a commodity that's easily delivered by many parties.
Re:Advanced JavaScript Techniques on Saturday October 10, 2009 @02:35AM (#873046)
Sadly, most of us have to code for IE, just as we have to code for the "good browsers".
Re:Typewar (By Eldarion) on Friday October 09, 2009 @05:35PM (#872503)
Given that I know almost nothing about fonts and didn't miss a question in the first 5 levels, I think it's far too easy.
Re:Ask HN: What are your (non-hn-related) hobbies? on Monday October 05, 2009 @01:52PM (#862284)
Photography and boardgames.

I'm jdhuntington at google's mail service.

Re:Anyone want to help test my Ajax chat (Erlang)? on Sunday September 27, 2009 @02:25AM (#846595)
Very nice! Look forward to hearing more about it.

I did have an issue where the server would fulfill my connection with no response data, and the client wouldn't re-open the connection to the server. This happened a few times, and it was right around the time someone was mentioning unicode, so I figure you might already be on this one.

It could be that the bank was hashing the passwords all along, but just truncating the user's input before hashing it and comparing it to the saved value. Not that I think this is what happened, but I'm just saying it could be.
Re:Obama mandates FCC to support Network Neutrality on Monday September 21, 2009 @09:40PM (#836055)
And given how few ISPs there are in this country, and how many businesses they're in, that's a pretty big danger already.

The solution to this should not be to limit those companies that do exist, but to foster the establishment of competitors.

Re:Ask HN: how do you regression test your web apps? on Thursday September 17, 2009 @01:43AM (#827508)
I don't know about all of the browsers you mentioned, but my team regression tests on a handful of those browsers using Selenium. [http://seleniumhq.org/] We use a ruby library to drive the Selenium engine and it seems to work pretty well.

Edit: Btw, nice job on skulpt, it looks really nice.

Have a look at the links they provide... One can get the book in a variety of formats through different stores. For instance, I got a few of these books for free via the Sony Store today.
Re:Why Portland is a great place for startups on Friday August 14, 2009 @04:41PM (#763798)
The drive is fine, but it's not like anyone actually gets in the water once they get there. It's far too cold.
Re:Rate HN: Our site - Looklookbuy on Wednesday August 12, 2009 @04:56PM (#759228)
Very cool!

To increase the signal/noise ratio, I'd love to specify that I'm looking for a product, and not accessories for a product. For example, I just searched for a camera I'm looking to buy. The first large set of results were accessories for that camera, and since they're cheaper than the camera itself, they showed up first.

Great start!

When I'm at a conference, I prefer finding people with entirely different sets of interests. This gives me the opportunity to potentially learn something new and maybe even find out about a field I didn't previously know about.

This idea sounds interesting. I'd like to see where it could go if you built it online and let people use it while not at conferences; keep a virtual "hallway track" online at all times.

Since you're writing a web app, there are very likely many well-tested libraries for sending mail. I suggest using one of these, then stub the interface to the librart and make sure your code is using the correct API when talking to the library.
Re:Ask HN: What apps are essential for mac? on Sunday May 17, 2009 @11:58PM (#614353)
Carbon Emacs
So in the original image, a gamer would buy a used game from GameStop instead of a new game from Best Buy.

If a used game will suffice, why would the same gamer not just buy a $40 game from Dawdle instead of the $60 game from Best Buy?

Re:Homemade relay computer (6 Hz) on Friday February 29, 2008 @11:56AM (#126167)
Got to see a demo of this system in person, and it was truly spectacular. I learned more in 10 minutes watching this thing than I did reading multiple books. (I took 'Compilers' from this guy, HIGHLY recommended to anyone who happens to be at portland state.)
