Re:The lost art of handheld demakes on Sunday October 02, 2022 @11:08PM (#33063078)
It really is something to watch a longplay of a demake you played years ago on a television years later after totally forgetting the experience - I think it makes you appreciate the speed of the motion and the compression of the information in 3d space. Even the music is compressed - just the synthesis from the gameboy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b26QnlpaVaA
Keep in mind that these vessels do not have bathrooms.
I wonder if he was using "Just Press Record" to record the audio? It has an Apple Watch app and complication, and it automatically syncs to iCloud. It also works independently of the iPhone, and syncs up later. I share the same question as others in this thread: how did the audio get back to the phone?

Re:Testing the June Intelligent Oven on Saturday October 06, 2018 @09:39AM (#18155071)
I really like that this oven has a camera, as well as temperature probes, and that it’s all integrated into the oven’s experience through a app on the phone. Do they have any competitors doing this stuff, or are they alone in doing this right now? I am impressed - they’ve decomposed the idea of what an oven experience usually is (stationary waiting and checking) and shifted it to what it could be (check on it from a distance, data driven shutoff from measurements). Very compelling use of simple features. That’s exciting design!

This enables “Put a turkey in the oven, and run to the store and pick up the frozen green beans you forgot to buy - you always know how the turkey is doing.”

Re:A Taxonomy of Technical Debt on Wednesday April 11, 2018 @03:01PM (#16814347)
Reminds me of risk analysis: Impact times Probability equals Risk.

Contagion seems like a probability factor. Impact is the cost of leaving things unchanged. Fix cost is the cost of fixing the problem.

Risk management in this context then means comparing Impact cost to Fix cost in terms of impact for the business.

Re:Ask HN: What Social Media are you using outside HN? on Wednesday March 28, 2018 @01:30PM (#16699819)
I use Nuzzel to track things shared by multiple people that I follow on various platforms such as Twitter that are trending over a given timeframe.

Great if you are interested in getting news from a niche area - let's say you follow 10 high profile VR people on twitter, and then half of them post an article about some VR thing, I'll see that on Nuzzel, and I won't have to scroll through Twitter and mentally cluster/count to know about the hot new thing in VR that VR people are talking about.

Hey Jaruzel,

Do you think you will share the code on github or something similar? Great writeup.

Cryptocat - not sure how that project is going these days, but here are some links:

Nothing like Briggs and Riley! Not a lot of their competitors offer lifetime warranties, but they do. They have replacement components, so you can fix a broken wheel instead of tossing the bag and starting from scratch.

Conferences can be a great way to meet world renowned experts in your field, ask them questions, and network with them.

Direct connection from RDU to SEA as of 2015: https://www.bizjournals.com/triangle/news/2015/10/01/alaska-...

For Amazon's decision, NC politics probably take points away, but right to work probably adds points in favor.

This frustration is why Korg sold so many Minilogues last year.

Check out this Minilogue review playlist by Marc Doty of Automatic Gainsay. You can see what's happening on the oscilloscope while he's explaining things.

That’s the thing about working for the government. You’ll never make more money than the president.
Tatsuya Takahashi understands the importance of accessibility in design. He has lowered the barrier to entry for new instrument buyers that want to get into analog synthesis, and that’s what has made him so successful.
Re:Ask HN: Are browser notifications user-hostile? on Tuesday December 19, 2017 @12:30AM (#15958004)
I have never accepted one. If I wanted to read something regularly, I’d bookmark it and revisit it. Or subscribe to the RSS feed if I wanted to keep up to date.

To me, it’s just as annoying as apps with notifications, or websites with pop ups about newsletters. All of these things are generally just things trying to add more noise into my life.

I value my quiet. Are you offering more value than my quiet?

The location filter provides options that are not in scope.

Why suggest I filter on Durham, NC when I type "Durham" into that location filter when there aren't actually results in Durham, NC?

In fact, why not use a map for this instead? You're talking about locations.

Siraj Raval does a great job of explaining AI topics with fun, fresh, and easy to understand topics and examples:

Here's a recent video where he talks about how to create new Pokemon with Generative Adversarial Networks (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generative_adversarial_network). Nice contrast from the usual MNIST dataset, especially if you want to be inspired to think about novel ways to apply this stuff:
