Is there any historical basis for how the traffic to cut is selected? Future flights? Existing flights? Short domestic flights vs international flights?

It’s also unclear what the actual definition of ‘cut’ is

Very true - there’s a famous scene from the movie Pi that talks about exactly this (and puts it very eloquently)

Wow! I didn’t realize the scope and duration of this outage. This must be doing some serious damage to some of their clients (catastrophic if this does impact JIRA, Confluence, and OpsGenie broadly on a company level). Is there any report of approximately how many (or specific) companies have been affected as a result of this?
What is with some of the responses in this thread! I understand some cases are not so clear, but if you do something as blatant as punch a flight attendant in the face I think that’s grounds to be put on such a list. There should be a policy so that after a period (or going through some program) you could then be removed from the list though..

It actually blew my mind when I heard that you could assault someone on a plane and not be instantly banned

I had a very similar experience as a child. I always wondered how other drivers could tell which way we were turning. My parents told me that they can tell from your turn signal. 6-year-old me just thought turn signals entailed the green flashing arrows on the dash (not also on the car’s taillights). I just assumed all drivers were tall enough to see into the other car and tell from their dash (for at least the next year or so)!

Not sure why the downvotes. Perhaps it’s due to referring to Fear and Loathing as a movie instead of the book it’s based on. The movie is actually a good representation of the book and almost all of the dialog is taken word-for-word
This is one of the few genuinely great ideas I’ve heard lately. I’m honestly surprised some of these games have implemented this functionality themselves - it’d probably help reduce player toxicity and frustration amongst other benefits
On top of that their deeplinking doesn’t even work. It’s completely broken. It takes me to the App Store when I already have the app installed and it’s literally impossible to go from a google search to a reddit post in the app smoothly. It absolutely blows my mind that an app where deeplinking is particularly important (google search results) is so broken. If you don’t want to build your own deeplink framework, then there’s plenty out there you can get to integrate like branch.io
Re:There are no results for tank man on Friday June 04, 2021 @11:24PM (#27401834)
About 9 hours ago when I first saw this I noticed the same thing on bing images (no tank man).

Now I see tank man when I search it on bing images....

Re:Let us now praise tiny ants on Monday April 12, 2021 @11:32PM (#26787853)
I use to have many ant problems - and certainly not due to any lack of cleanliness.

It pretty much all went away once I got a cat. At first I thought it was coincidence, but over the years I noticed if I ever killed a random ant the cat would start rolling around and scenting the very spot the ant was killed.

I don’t have any scientific proof, but I have to think the cat’s scent/pheromones interferes with the ants and prevents more from following/coming.

Curious to hear any similar experiences

Re:What is an NFT from an artist’s perspective? on Saturday February 27, 2021 @12:49PM (#26286570)
I’m extremely skeptical of all cryptocurrencies and most usages of blockchain. However this seems like the first interesting and potentially practical application I’ve heard.

It deals with art - something that’s value is inherently subjective. Plus it gives makers of digital art a better/additional way to fund themselves. Further, transactions would likely be limited reducing environmental impact. Finally, it could provide some competition to company’s like Sotheby’s.

Obviously there a lot of open questions (couldn’t someone else just duplicate a work and make their own coin, why not just pay an artist directly, money laundering, etc). But I think this at least warrants further discussion. It’s an interesting way to make digital art collectible/tradable

Re:Ask HN: What was your favorite comment in 2020? on Friday January 01, 2021 @01:10PM (#25605216)
This top level comment chain explaining quantum teleportation was great and insightful: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25466836
Every single hacker news thread about the Cyberpunk fiasco has had a ton of top comments about they haven’t had any issues with the game.

Performance/bugs aside, what about the completeness issues? How can the game be acceptable or fun when cars run on tracks and NPC’s don’t have a problem being attacked?

That’s my main concern - I’m sure the performance/bugs will be worked out. But will the game actually be finished?

Thank you, Dang!

The Hacker News community is my favorite thing on the internet - and a good chunk of its success is due to your hard work!

Sounds like a corporate version of Psycho-Pass (a dystopian society where everyone constantly has their emotional well-being monitored and corrected by the state) https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psycho-Pass
Your words almost exactly echo Marilyn Manson’s commentary on the columbine shootings. Interesting parallel. He was asked what he would say to the shooters and he said “I wouldn’t say a single word to them. I’d listen to what they have to say. And that’s what no one did.”
I think many people aren't taking into account the visibility of Trump's twitter. Trump making violence-glorifying or factually incorrect or medically dangerous tweets is far different from other twitter user's or even other blue-check-mark users because his reach is far wider than the vast majority of those users. Further, Trump has an established track record of doing this repeatedly. Those two facts establish a clear and rational basis for targeting his tweets specifically.

Completely agree with your second point though (not that there is any collusion to silence conservatives - but that this whole situation will be taken that way and used to energize that base).

Note that this is separate from his tweet that was discussed earlier (and arguably more noteworthy given that it happened during Tesla’s earnings call today)

The press release states that doctors have seen that patients on ventilators have higher death rates. But wouldn’t we expect that? If the situation is dire enough to put someone on a ventilator then they’re probably less likely to live anyway?

Edit: They do mention that it’s higher than other diseases relatively speaking, but don’t we expect Covid-19 to be higher than say, the flu, given it seems to primarily target the upper respiratory area?

I just recently learned about the Cabinet Noir [1]. This reminds me of it

[1] - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cabinet_noir

There’s nothing bigger at play. The reasoning is obvious. It’s because there are not enough masks available and it’s more important that healthcare workers get them right now than the general public.

Once healthcare workers are covered, then we can make sure everyone else starts wearing them.
