News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

I ran content and educational pages for Kraken a few years ago. This was just as AI was getting useful. I was told by the head of security, the guy who coded all the original software, not to use any outside AI tools to proofread or edit. Then, a few months in, the CEO, Jesse Powell, asked why we were so slow in producing content - we had to edit it all by hand, as you do. We explained the security issues and he said "Who cares, just use it."

So on one hand they are the most secure business on the Internet and on the other hand YOLO!

author here: probably not.

Lots of books about horology... and a book about a free energy device?
Re:Show HN: Pitch Decks for Founders on Tuesday March 07, 2023 @09:30AM (#35055720)
I'm a former TechCrunch journalist and I've seen thousands of pitch decks. I wrote a short, readable book for founders about how to make pitch decks. It's free on Kindle and if you want a PDF copy just comment.
Re:Ask HN: How do you celebrate failures at work? on Wednesday February 08, 2023 @12:45PM (#34711739)
I started a podcast about this. I'm sick of the rah-rah confident founder BS we see on here and all over the Internet. Sometimes we need to learn from our failures. Anyway, check it out. Keep Going: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/keep-going-a-podcast-a...
Re:[Show HN] Find similar podcasts on Friday February 03, 2023 @10:04AM (#34641927)
I tried to do this a while back. People just don't want that kind of search in a standalone site, needs to be a feature on Apple Podcasts or Spotify.
The response could have been:

Wow cool! Can you tell us more about the story? Edit: Spelling

Instead it's a wikipedia dump.

Your resume is a mess probably. I'm a writer. If you want me to take a look email me John at Biggs dot cc.
I live in Brooklyn and noticed this kind of thing before the pandemic - I'd say 2018 or so. I suspect (but I can't confirm) that there was recently a glut of aftermarket mufflers and exhaust systems that were able to amp up a cheap car to make it sounds cool on the BQE. As a technologist it's been interesting to see the growth of this stuff as more and more people figured out what to order on Wish to make their Nissan sound like a tractor.
Re:Ask HN: Any weird tips for weight loss? on Thursday March 10, 2022 @07:40AM (#30626234)
If you're overweight and unable to lose anything try bariatric surgery. Our food culture is not built to allow overweight people to survive and at this point the ONLY way to do it without massive willpower and endless failure is a surgical solution. Saying "Eat less" isn't an answer any more effective than telling an alcoholic to "Drink less."
I’ve covered the space for years and I think two things are simultaneously true. It’s a huge scam full of shysters and liars who basically found a meaty grift to make a lot of money really fast. I met loads of those people.

What keeps me going, though, is the fact that the technology has some utility and I’m not about to throw out the next tcp/ip because someone will use it to scam an old lady. I like the artistry of the circus but I hate the clowns.

If we are doing analogs, this is the 2000 era of the dot con boom when there were loads of companies doing websites and four guys really doing good work - let’s say bezos, page, brin, and gates. Theil and musk got lucky with their 2k era grift as did a precious few holdouts but only a few really won. Did anyone who bought Netscape early on the retail markets win? Nope. Crypto investors are the ones jumping in after the whales had their taste. They get scraps.

Who is the next FAANG? Who knows. But this is the space where they’re going to be born.

Hey guys. I wrote this. If you need help ask someone for it and if you’re too cool to get help good luck.

big fan but it crashed!
So this is really good for what it is - an open source Scrivener. If I didn't have the cash for Scrivener I'd use this until I could afford it.
