Re:DigiNotar Damage Disclosure (with full list of issued certs) on Monday September 05, 2011 @10:34AM (#2962294)
Wow, is this a typo??

"The most egregious certs issued were for [asterisk].[asterisk].com and [asterisk].[asterisk].org"

I didn't know double wildcard certs were possible. This would be extremely helpful for us if that was. Anyone know?

(Just to be extra clear, we would like one cert that covers a.b.example.org as well as d.e.example.org, and hopefully also still works for a.example.org)

edit: We currently have a *.example.org cert, and while some browsers think that is valid for a.b.example.org, most do not.

Re:Auto rsync local changes to remote server on Friday August 19, 2011 @08:04AM (#2903044)
This probably isn't the best place for this question, but its somewhat related. We currently have a dev and prod environment that I can't install applications (like git) but i want to setup a better deployment process aside from just copying files. For various reasons development needs to be done on the dev server. I have tried using sshfs with git to commit changes in dev and deploy them to prod but it seems too slow. My next task was going to use something like fabric to script the process, but I am unsure if that is the best tool for the job.

My thinking was that a script would sync changes on the dev server to a intermediate staging server and commit the changes. For deployment to prod i'd like to copy just the files that changed up to production. Should I just write a shell script or are there better tools for the job?

Re:Local Food or Less Meat? Data Tells The Real Story on Wednesday June 29, 2011 @09:50PM (#2712157)
there is a lot more energy that goes into food production than just the fertilizer.

I agree, people need to lighten up.
Re:Using git to manage a website on Sunday February 06, 2011 @08:13PM (#2187061)
if this was possible and useful drupal wouldn't have Features. the whole point is whats in the database can't be versioned easily.
Re:Facebook hype will fade on Saturday January 08, 2011 @01:56PM (#2083667)
most of the complaints here could be solved by facebook implementing (better) disjoint friend networks. I would imagine they are working on this. I currently have draconian privacy in place to prevent most of my friends from seeing status updates. Once this becomes easier wont these issues go away?
does anyone know if their other sites db's were compromised aside from gawker.com?
Re:Grooveshark's new Javascript/HTML interface on Saturday December 04, 2010 @12:11AM (#1968558)
Is there any way to make a grooveshark desktop version that uses this same html5 interface? I love how the next/prev buttons on my mac work with that interface (using gs desktop helper)
Re:Jeff Atwood - The Sitemap Paradox on Monday November 01, 2010 @08:56PM (#1858878)
we make use of google site search for our search and sitemaps are the vehicle by which we can ensure a new site of ours gets indexed within 24 hours (we have a lot of small, frequently changing sites)
Re:Ask HN: Offer of Employment retracted on Thursday September 23, 2010 @07:37AM (#1719254)
sorry, in hindsight that was overly vague. My email is jconline at the domain of gmail, I will send you a link to the job posting when it comes out. Also, we haven't done any Rails dev yet, to date we are all .NET / PHP, so if you only want to do RoR, it may not be a good fit. We will be doing a lot of drupal in the near future as well.

i know working for the man isn't popular around these parts, but if someone is looking for a programming job in DC let me know. Its a govt job but I love working here. Lots of freedom to work on projects that you want.

i thought he (or someone in his company?) was one of the original people on the mailing list that helped develop how certificates should work in browsers. just was a matter of right place right time.
Re:Google and Verizon in Talks on Selling Internet Priority on Wednesday August 04, 2010 @10:19PM (#1576944)
could it be that Google is trying to show people what could happen if a tiered internet became a reality, like reverse psychology
while i know it is possible to do many of the things i want with some tomfoolery, these should be built into the UI so anyone can find out about them easily.
i feel like i'm the only one, but isn't reddit just really really hard to use?

* No subreddit directory (you can't even group the reddits that you are subscribed to)

* no groupings of subreddits, or related subreddits

* help is really bad ("subscribe" means hitting '+frontpage'?)

* Postings would be so much better off with a tagging system that would prevent users from having to cross-post

* search

Re:Python 2.7 released on Sunday July 04, 2010 @10:05PM (#1486931)
i am a new mac user (and new to *nix in general). i was trying to get mapnik with postgres working on my mac yesterday and it took me 5 hours to get macports / mapnik setup, and after most of my day was done it turns out that ImageMagick via macports and snow leopard don't mix. (Finally I tried downloading the binary for ImageMagick but then macports doesn't recognize it..) Very frustrating. Is there really nothing better, or am i just too much of a noob? What is the reason for making me build it instead of doing soemthing like apt-get on ubuntu?

the html inspection (outlining) works a lot better than in 1.4. several of my sites had outlining way off in 1.4, very frustrating.
