Re:Ask HN: What skills/things are you learning? on Wednesday August 14, 2024 @12:55PM (#41248155)
Recently learned to fly and got my private pilot license. I'm working on an instrument rating next...

I've also played drums most of my life and am planning to learn to play piano next year.

Well that made for a really fun rabbit hole to start my day. Thanks. https://worldbuilding.stackexchange.com/questions/36667/can-...
Thanks for checking it out and for the feedback! I like the idea of pre-canned scenarios and an easy CTA to get started with one or more of them.
Hi all -- I built this because I consistently find myself re-creating the same spreadsheets to do long-term financial planning. I also find it hard to see how small changes in the near-term impact long-term compounding. I hope you find it useful, and I'd love to hear any feedback.

This is amazing. We’ll done.
Re:Why Jira Sucks on Thursday December 31, 2020 @05:56PM (#25598174)
I aspire to build a product that has a website dedicated to how much it sucks, in namesake.

I'm surprised at how serious people are being in the comments... This is amazing. My team and I had a good laugh. Great work.

+1 for Diffie-Hellman... and the paint analogy.
I like the idea of social regulation (voting, reporting, block lists, etc.) to govern the content. Also a healthy use of computer vision and ML to weed out offensive images will probably be necessary.

I think the previous incarnations of this were a bit too creepy and focussed way too much on the location-based aspects of it rather than the experience of augmenting "what's going on around you right now". They were also way too early... Users weren't ready to allow an application to use their location a few years ago.

Maker here...

I built hrnw to connect people who are in the same location at the same time. Think of it as an anonymous chatroom with everyone else who is also on the app at the same time, within a few hundred feet or so of you. I think it would be fun for bars, concerts, conferences, or really any other social gatherings.

Please let me know what you think, if you'd like to know about the stack, and if you see any big issues.

Re:Is Python the Future of Programming? on Saturday July 21, 2018 @07:30PM (#17584414)
No.
I have an hour commute to my real job, so I use that to hack on my side project before and after work.

Setting small goals has always helped me keep up the energy to move it forward. When you're working in really small time chunks, it's important to make sure you have something achievable to accomplish. You're not going to be able to do things like "finish the sign up flow" in one night, but you can do things like "finish the authByPassword() method" and still be moving forward.

As for the money aspect of it, that's simple, just don't spend any. Bootstrapping is all about doing more with less, so don't spend anything until you absolutely have to. When you do finally start writing checks, make sure you're spending on things that will have the highest impact.

+1 for "find a mentor outside of the company to lean on"

I'm an experienced manager, but this is still a hugely important point. Mentor relationships are really underrated.

Re:Ask HN: CTO of a $10M Company or SDM of a $150B Company? on Thursday April 12, 2018 @10:40AM (#16821388)
This is a really good point. I agree it's a better use of energy to work on side projects while your work-life is stable, rather than injecting stress into your life.

Ask HN: CTO of a $10M Company or SDM of a $150B Company?

Asking for a friend... "Should I jump ship from my great corporate job as an engineering lead/manager to go run the technology operations of a nearly-profitable pre-Series-A SaaS startup?"Both offer similar technical challenges, problems to solve, etc. Both have similar compensation.Thoughts?

Re:Show HN: Schezzle, a flexible website monitoring tool on Wednesday February 08, 2017 @11:53AM (#13599746)
The driving force behind it is that monitoring shouldn't fit into a mold. My thinking is that you should write a script to perform whatever mission critical thing your application provides, and monitor the output of that.

Thanks for the feedback!

Re:Ask HN: Does anyone dream of code? on Wednesday February 08, 2017 @11:34AM (#13599553)
Absolutely. It's hard to turn your mind off when you're thinking about something complex and rewarding. Some recent study I read said we sleep to forget, so maybe this is your mind's way of making sure you don't forget the progress you've made on whatever particular thing you're working on.

I've found that watching some boring TV or having a drink (alcohol) before bed helps.
