Big difference between this one (which is great) and OP's is that OP's done all the WebGL himself whereas Nop's uses Three.js

No actually once you have it, you have it forever.

All from the sun.
Re:Welcome to a comet on Thursday November 13, 2014 @06:08AM (#8600908)
Also very interesting, if you look at the high-res picture and zoom at the bottom right, you'll notice some sort of cable on the ground/boulder.

This could be the cable from one of the harpoons that may have fired but didn't anchor themselves, or it could be a feature attached to Philae that's in the field of vision.

Re:Welcome to a comet on Thursday November 13, 2014 @05:42AM (#8600840)
That's a great achievement in any case. I'm just slightly worried from the looks of this picture that Philae actually stabilized on its side.

Also the large amount of shadow in the area is worrisome for the solar panels to function properly.

Press conference with the release of a full panorama (which will hopefully not confirm the side landing) is scheduled for 1400 CET.

From one of the comments at the bottom of the article:

Some of these are pretty amazing.

Re:The End of Big Twitter on Monday September 01, 2014 @08:52PM (#8255258)
People are growing out of things, thinking platforms are getting old but forgetting that sometimes it is simply them that are in fact struggling to adapt to fast evolving ways to use a concept as generic as Twitter.

I'm not saying that he is necessarily wrong about the recent changes in the timeline but it does sound a bit like "things were better when we were the kings of the hill"... you don't hear the Bieber and Lady Gaga fans complaining about Twitter...

A good thread about programming languages in avionics.

Having had a lot of my undergrad CS classes in Ada (in Toulouse France, the home of Airbus) I get nostalgic every time I see a post mentioning Ada on HN.

Re:People suck at technical interviews on Wednesday August 27, 2014 @04:55PM (#8234668)
I'm afraid you have me confused with someone else, sorry.
Re:People suck at technical interviews on Wednesday August 27, 2014 @03:33PM (#8234256)
I completely agree with you. Also to be fair towards Deepmind I should mention that this was the first round of interview. Hopefully the following steps will prove more stimulating, in which case 3h for the first step was maybe slightly too much.
Re:People suck at technical interviews on Wednesday August 27, 2014 @03:06PM (#8234102)
As I said before, yes these are very basic questions... and I'm not complaining that the questions were too hard or anything, I'm saying that finding someone who will be able to answer 100% of these "definition" questions will not tell you anything about how competent that person is...

Making them face a simple stats/CS/maths/ML problem and see if he/she is able to come up with the relevant concepts is far more interesting.

Re:C3.js: D3-based reusable chart library on Wednesday August 27, 2014 @01:58PM (#8233587)
This is nice, easy to use. It is however only using an extremely limited subset of d3 capabilities, which makes me wonder what added value is brought by the fact of making this d3 based compared to other "pure" and lightweight chart libraries which have the same functions [1]

My usual go to library: Flot http://www.flotcharts.org/

Re:People suck at technical interviews on Wednesday August 27, 2014 @01:38PM (#8233448)
Having just had a 3h long technical interview for Google Deepmind, I cannot agree more with a lot of points raised in this post.

Deepmind being a machine learning/statistics/maths/computer science fuelled company, it made sense for the interview process to follow this simple organisation.

I was however very disappointed by the questions asked for each part. Not a single one of the ~100 questions asked during these 3h of my life demanded some "problem solving" skills, only encyclopaedic knowledge (describe this algorithm, what is a Jaccobian matrix, define what an artificial neural network is, what is polymorphism, give examples of classifiers, what are the conditions to apply a t-test...)

So what if someone doesn't remember every definition of the stats/ML/CS/Maths respective bibles as long as they're clever enough to look it up and understand quickly what's needed?

I mean, I get it these are very basic questions but as a highly qualified interviewee who necessarily has other offers given this set of skills, this fastidious, back to school, time wasting process does not reflect well on the company and makes me consider my other options even more seriously.

"The International Biographical Centre, Cambridge, has honoured him as ‘one of the noblest of the world’."

The International Biographical Centre is a notorious scam.. you can simply pay a few hundred $ to get your name in the "outstanding intellectuals of the 21st century" [1]

Just because it's in Cambridge doesn't mean it's good.

Re:My hacky Twitter robot got 10K followers behind my back on Wednesday June 25, 2014 @05:28AM (#7942945)
Well if you look at the most popular trends recorded :

http://whotrended.it/top-trends

the first by far is #tcot so apparently conservatives are doing well on Twitter.

For the analysis I think one year of data is probably a bit on the short side. But if I let it run for a decade (providing Twitter is still used by then), we'll definitely see a generational effect that could be interesting.

Re:People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts on Monday June 23, 2014 @04:10PM (#7934298)
I really wish I could provide some A/B testing statistics, I really would. But in the timeframe of the Worldcup, a relatively small user base and doing this a side project only this seems a bit challenging. However you make a very good point.
Re:People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts on Monday June 23, 2014 @08:23AM (#7931506)
You're right. It's linked to what has been said in the top comment I think -users think they know what they want but they have no idea.
Re:People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts on Monday June 23, 2014 @08:16AM (#7931470)
This is very true. I actually tried to make a poll. It worked pretty well I have to say.

http://nospronos.com/en/a-few-questions

But again it was skewed towards the people ready to take time to answser so the answser were mainly very enthusiastic which I know now doesn't represent the majority of the users

Re:People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts on Monday June 23, 2014 @08:14AM (#7931460)
I live in England but I'm French. But yes it's a bit sad now here everybody just lost interest and went back to drinking tea.
Re:People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts on Monday June 23, 2014 @08:07AM (#7931435)
No I was absolutely not planning on adding real accounts. But people went ahead and wrote me emails asking for the feature:

Example: "Good job for a draft website. Personally I'm playing in different leagues and I'd really appreciate to have an account to avoid multiple input and multiple links ..."

This is what made me think it was a real need in the community, which was clearly wrong.

Re:People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts on Monday June 23, 2014 @08:03AM (#7931422)
Glad you still enjoy it :)

The best user so far has 38 points and a difference of 42 That is out of the 32 games played :

- 9 perfect predictions - 11 correct outcome predictions - 12 wrong predictions

which is pretty impressive

They are "returning visitors", that's basic Analytics stuff: https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/1144424?hl=en-GB
Re:People hate to register, some follow-up thoughts on Monday June 23, 2014 @07:48AM (#7931376)
Yes I agree, my point was that these silent user can be a majority and they seem like they really enjoy your site too, coming back each day and all. But in the end, when you introduce a new feature most of them (in my case close to 100% of them) will ignore it and stick to what they first came in for. That's why I propose to "normalize" by the daily active users...
