Re:What is the modern equivalent of Google Groups? on Sunday August 25, 2024 @12:26PM (#41348560)
Yeah that might be a good selling point for Discord. So far I haven’t really felt at home in Discord’s UI paradigm, but I also haven’t found any ”must-have” communities there either (for my tastes).
Re:What is the modern equivalent of Google Groups? on Sunday August 25, 2024 @12:01PM (#41348300)
I mainly hang out in two Slack communities, both quite high-volume. The first one is public but regional (not in English), the other one is invite-only but quite big.

For people who want a nice place to hang out online, I can warmly recommend starting a Slack (”tenant”?). I’m kinda surprised that more people don’t try this. Mattermost or Discord might work too, but IMHO Slack still has the best UI for this. (The shortened retention sucks of course, but it’s still very useful.)

In general, the best online conversations I read/participate in take place on Slack.
Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @01:44PM (#37635351)
It’s not about the the browser. As others have pointed out, in order to use these sites without getting messages like “please upgrade your Adobe Flash plugin”, one needs to use an ad-blocker such as uBlock Origin.

I like uBlock Origin but these anti-patterns really leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @12:37PM (#37634622)
Is that in the US? ISPs seems to be quite weird over there (:
Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @12:24PM (#37634484)
Yeah that sucks. The streaming sites are often user-hostile. And their selection of quality movies is not terribly impressive.
Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @12:19PM (#37634452)
Interesting! How does that work? i.e. where does Qbittorrent get the results from? Would be cool if that could be done outside of Qbittorrent (for those of us who uses other clients).

I usually browse torrent sites in incognito mode, where uBlock is not active. Perhaps I should just set up a new browser profile for that instead.

PS. OTOH, I’m not really shure why I should trust a site that sends me away to other sites when I click on links. Talk about dark pattern…

Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @12:18PM (#37634443)
Yep. And that’s not really a selling point in favour of the convenience of torrents…
Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @11:35AM (#37634042)
Torrenting definitely is possible. But based on my own experiences I would definitely not call it convenient. Still very useful though, since there are lots of older movies that are not available on streaming (especially for us living outside of the US).
Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @11:32AM (#37634019)
I’m not so sure about that.

According to [0] the domain x1337x·eu should be a real mirror, and it definitely has ads.

Re:The World’s Oldest Active Torrent Turns 20 Years Old on Sunday September 24, 2023 @11:14AM (#37633863)
Well, sure. But it’s very hard these days to find torrents without jumping through lots of nasty hoops. Especially now that RARBG has ceased to operate.

The other day I was trying to download Blade Runner: The Final Cut. I went to “1337x” but I just kept getting ads wherever I clicked. Yuck. The whole experience just felt humiliating. In the end I just opened Apple’s “TV” app and bought the movie for $9 instead. Hopefully a (small) portion of that will go to the funding of new great movies. (Well, the odds for that might be high, but one can still dream…)

With that said, if anyone knows of any decent trackers out there, feel free to get in touch. (My e-mail is in my profile.)

Re:Launch HN: Shimmer (YC S21) – ADHD coaching for adults on Friday November 04, 2022 @03:59PM (#33472896)
It’s entirely possibly to have ADHD and opt out of medication. If it’s appropriate or not is very individual though, probably not something we can settle on a message board.
Meditate • Read HN • Read the newspaper (mostly online, sometimes on paper) • Read more about upcoming trends/best-practices/improvements stuff • Grab a coffe, either in the office kitchen or at some nice coffee shop • Discuss with people in Facebook/Slack groups • Chat with friends. Stuff like that.

I wish I would take more walks outside, but I don’t do it nearly as often as I should.

Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @11:30PM (#24404966)
Good question. I can see that being an issue in the US.

In my case, I actually work in IT rather than tech. Equity is never part of the deal. I think equity is much more common for US employees than it is for European.

Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @04:37PM (#24402614)
Ouch. There are definitely pitfalls along this path. And if the manager doesn’t understand what the deal implies I’m sure it can be very hard and stressful. Too bad it didn’t work out for your wife.
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @04:21PM (#24402454)
I can understand why you feel that way. But many companies simply doesn’t want to talk to people who wants to work part-time. (As in ”don’t call us, we’ll call you”.) So even if it might seem pushy to negotiate like that, at least to me it’s understandable.
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @04:05PM (#24402310)
Wow. Sounds pretty great. I’ve generally thought of startups as quite stressful work places – might not be the case for all of them though?
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @04:04PM (#24402298)
Cool!

I’ve heard about Ferriss book but haven’t read it. Is it good?

Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @04:02PM (#24402278)
Cool! Sounds like a good deal.

Having an understanding manager really helps I guess.

I also have three kids so I know the struggle :)

Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:56PM (#24402226)
Cool! How does one find such a great employer? ;-)
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:55PM (#24402214)
Location is Stockholm, Sweden and I’ve done lots of IT support kind of work, but very recently transitioned to doing more of sysadmin kind of work for a small MSP (Managed Service Provider).
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:51PM (#24402181)
Thank you!
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:51PM (#24402177)
Yeah it would probably help if I get better at identifying work that is actually high-value. It’s kinda easy to fall in to the trap of doing busywork that demands lots of hours but doesn’t really produce so much value.
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:49PM (#24402161)
Yeah it could perhaps be easier if I manage to transition to a niche (or two) that is in high and stable demand.
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:47PM (#24402134)
Sounds like a good deal.

Are you a developer or some other role?

Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:46PM (#24402120)
Yeah I’ve been thinking about joining a small company like that. But they can be quite hard to find since they generally don’t put up any job postings. Congratulations to finding one! :)
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:44PM (#24402108)
Sounds great and kudos to you for trying an alternative to the rat race!

Was it hard to negotiate or was your employer positive to the idea from the beginning?

Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:42PM (#24402083)
To my ears, 2.5 hours sounds a bit low. But yes, actually productive hours can sometimes be way lower than the wall time.
Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:40PM (#24402073)
I hear ya. Many recruiters/bosses simply don’t want to hear anything about part-time work at all. I think that’s a mistake on their end – it could be a major benefit that would make that employer stand out from the crowd. But many companies sadly doesn’t think about it that way.

PS. As someone else mentioned here, and in case you find yourself on the market again: You might want to try to discuss part-time only after receiving a written offer. Then you know for sure that they want to hire you. And then you have some leverage.

Re:Ask HN: Working part-time in tech? on Monday September 07, 2020 @03:37PM (#24402040)
Yeah if I decide to try my hand at contracting then reaching out to past employers could be a good idea. After all they know my track record, and I know lots of people there, and I know who to speak with to get things done etc. And they won’t have to explain all the domain-specific knowledge to me.
