usig modern web technologies to develop high performance scientific applications. We built a highly optimized, interactive and exploratory application for single-cell data analysis[1]. it runs purely in the browser with no backend and scales upto 200K cells. similar efforts include the biowasm project [2].

After spending a lot of time testing out different apps, I ended up doing the same. Also orgzly for android works pretty well with org files stored on dropbox!
me too! I also sync everything to google drive so I can access my pdf's from any device

I use orgmode and emacs for everything plain text!
Re:Managing my personal knowledge base on Friday January 10, 2020 @11:26AM (#22012081)
This has been a workflow that served me well for the last couple of years -

Most of my stuff is on dropbox/google drive for accessing them across different devices. I prefer tools that let me control where the data is and not the other way around.

For all academic papers, documents, I use Zotero. you can use your favorite pdf reader to annotate or take notes on pdf's and zotero will sync these. I also love the feature where Zotero can automatically extract all annotations from the pdf. (I some times save these as an org file)

If I am reading a longform web article or a blog post that I really think is useful and helpful, I also save these to Zotero. The push to kindle extension from fivefilters is an awesome tool that converts webpages to pdf.

I'm currently testing the memex extension from worldbrain to annotate and organize my browsing history.

For all notes, journals, random thoughts, ideas, (both work and personal), I use orgmode. (I recently switched from ZimWiki). Its been amazing so far. So many things are easier to do orgmode although the learning curve for emacs is pretty steep in the beginning.

On mobile, I use the orgzly app for accessing and taking notes! Its by far the best android app I use so far.

practices >> tools!

mine too! i also sometimes use lyx when i need to do things quickly!
ofcourse! it also has to be functional :)

Re:Ask HN: Personal Library Manager? on Wednesday May 15, 2019 @09:07AM (#19918991)
might not work for everyone, but I use Zotero, its not specifically designed for books and magazines, but it works and keeps track of all my stuff!

Hi Peter,

Re:Ask HN: What does your diet look like? on Tuesday May 30, 2017 @10:15AM (#14445505)
did you exercise?
I think in the next 5 years desktop applications are going to be a thing again. Frameworks like Qt, electron, nw.js and others have made it very easy for developers to create desktop applications.
Re:Ask HN: Has anyone sponsored a J1 specialist or trainee? on Monday December 05, 2016 @02:50PM (#13108723)
the 2 yr rule depends on the funding agency and your profession. Most fellowship/postdoc positions funded by the government have this requirement.
pretty cool!

Is there a way to show what type(paperback, mp3, etc) somewhere in the title ?

Re:Ask HN: Who is Hiring? (January 2012) on Wednesday January 04, 2012 @03:38PM (#3425799)
I am currently in the US, but will be looking for opportunities at Hyderabad, India. Is it possible to set up the interview in the US for a position in India ?
My 2 cents of advice.

Do not drop out unless you are filthy rich. It doesn't work in an Indian environment where companies and jobs depend on what your under graduate college is and your qualification. Companies only visit BIG and reputed colleges and no matter how bad you are, you might be lucky in getting selected for the job. That is what you are paying for, its for that damn job and not for the research and education.

But I think you are going in the right direction. If I look back at myself 4 years ago, I am in the same position as yours. Its good that you are looking at the MIT and Stanford's courses. They help you a lot in learning new concepts. Also make yourself comfortable with programming. at the end of the day, it boils down to how good you can apply your concepts and code stuff. Find some interesting projects on Github. Fork it and work on it. you might not be successful at your first attempt. But you will learn a lot of things on your way. Involve yourself in various open source projects and hackers club in your local city and I'm sure you will be successfull.

Re:Offer HN: Free licenses for two developer tools on Thursday October 28, 2010 @09:36AM (#1842778)
why is it only for people who are here for atleast for 6 months or 50+ karma ?

Could you just change it to everyone ?

Thanks for the help.

I do get your point regarding the application. Do you want me to send you my SOP ? or do you want me to provide my profile(similar to a CV) and you review it ?
