"it's unlikely your site/app will ever be as big as RapGenius"

Heroku's entire promise is scalability. And this isn't an edge case, it will bite you if you need anything over 1 dyno.

Re:Why Bootstrap might be very important on Wednesday March 07, 2012 @01:38PM (#3676571)
i'm a designer and a developer and i'm using bootstrap in my latest project as a base UI. i figured, i'm introducing some big new ideas that are hard enough to explain to my users, why make them discover how a new menu or form works? so i used bootstrap for all my typical interactions and it's saving me weeks of work i would have spent rolling my own custom framework.

and it doesn't look anything like bootstrap.

Re:Ask HN: Dress for interview with an Incubator/VC firm? on Wednesday April 06, 2011 @03:39PM (#2416604)
i agree with the no suit sentiment. but i work in a place where plenty of people look like crap in a suit. it's all about how you take care of yourself. you can look put together in shorts and flip flops. ultimately you're asking someone to give you hundreds of thousands of dollars. your ability to get dressed in the morning will say a lot about your ability to build a company.

Re:Ask HN: What will Y Combinator look like in 3 years? on Monday March 21, 2011 @12:17AM (#2348447)

(and how do you do a poll?)

Ask HN: Would you attend a Hacker News Conference?

Here at SXSW, and I had the pleasure to attend the "Life After YC" session with Brian Chesky (Airbnb), Dane Hurtubise (JobSpice), Drew Houston (Dropbox), and Jessica Mah (inDinero). It was fantastic. More than any other session, I felt like I was among peers. I got thinking, screw SXSW, we need a HN Conference. Or at least a HN track at SXSW.Make it hacker-oriented, with technical and...

from last year but awesome:

"I’m totally serious when I say that you shouldn’t go. Instead – while your rivals are distracted in Texas, pissing their money up the wall and ejaculating over their laptop stickers during yet another Evan Williams keynote – you should use the time instead to stay at home and work on building your start-up.

Your liver will thank you, your investors will thank you, and most importantly so will millions of real-world users who really want you to create something new and innovative rather than being sucked into the hype and churning out just a better, prettier Twitter-meets-Gowalla clone for the approbation of your peers."

Re:If you're not failing you're not trying. on Monday March 07, 2011 @04:56AM (#2296636)
i was just reading about this today in "Rework", about failing in obscurity. similar notion to failing at something mundane with the M&M's. relish the opportunity you have while operating in obscurity, to fail as often as you can so you can adjust and learn and tweak and process all the data that comes with that.

also reminds me of the zuckerberg quote: "unless you are breaking stuff, you are not moving fast enough." failure isn't the goal, rather a byproduct of good work.

Re:How Github has changed the open source world on Sunday March 06, 2011 @01:20AM (#2293622)
i do the same. generally if the project is even on GitHub, that's a great sign it's got life.
his character in the film was my favorite. i didn't think he was portrayed as an asshole at all; in fact, he seemed pretty badass. and the scene with the stanford girl was like the quintessential moment every geek dreams of. "you just slept on sean parker." classic.
sending email in a day isn't the same thing as reading newsletters. and ads on websites are spam. they usually don't engage, add value, or do anything worthwhile.
the entire concept of downvoting is based on disagreement.

(haha, awesome whoever just downvoted that)

it's the format of the piece. he goes to lunch with interesting people at interesting places and includes what they ate.
who the hell signs up for newsletters? interesting how your other business was created because newsletters are lame.

these problems don't seem like ones normal people deal with. they're just problems for people trying to add something to their domain squatting businesses. spam my inbox with lame content, and then spam the newsletter with ads? ugh.

how about, people want really good content through email (huge assumption), but great content publishers aren't publishing content due to low advertiser involvement. the service could hook writers up with relevant advertisers who could add something to the conversation, giving the user something other than a text ad or banners. if it's a small market, the service could be very specialized and deal with people/advertisers individually.

but honestly, there's probably more money in viagra ads than there is in email newsletters.

just noticed, it IS a wiki of sorts. you can add founders and investments. nice work.
