Re:Ask HN: If you don't permit telecommuting, why? on Friday July 22, 2016 @01:14PM (#12144954)
I think it's also probably an issue of trust. If someone isn't in front of you banging on their keyboard you have no assurance that they're actually doing work.

The solution is really to use communication tools like Slack and also put the focus on deliverables instead of "work units".

No, that's why those companies have PROPOSED terminator genes. There is no commercially available product that actually contains them.

For more advanced workflows, you can use Huginn for Ruby:

https://github.com/cantino/huginn

or Node-RED for JavaScript (this one is backed by IBM and has a neat drag and drop UI)

I think once the voice processing is done, the hard part is getting it to actually do something useful.

Also you can hit the "auto" button to make the viewer follow the spaceship.
Password managers usually have a way to add serial numbers or secure notes, that's where I store mine. And you should be using a password manager anyway, if you aren't already.
Re:Apple can comply with the FBI court order on Wednesday February 17, 2016 @07:19PM (#11122699)
It's possible to reflash the firmware in DFU mode, but it requires erasing the data on the phone. Or more technically, there's an encryption key in storage that needs to be regenerated to give access to the filesystem, but that encryption key (in conjunction with the hardware key in the Secure Enclave and the user's passcode, if set) is also necessary to read any user data on the phone.
Re:Apple can comply with the FBI court order on Wednesday February 17, 2016 @07:16PM (#11122684)
Yes, you can only load new firmware onto the device by erasing it, which would make it pointless.
Re:Apple can comply with the FBI court order on Wednesday February 17, 2016 @04:56PM (#11121765)
The only way to bypass the brute forcing delay would be to increase computing power, since it's a function of the encryption method used. It basically goes through a number of iterations chosen to make it take about 80 ms per attempt.
Re:Apple can comply with the FBI court order on Wednesday February 17, 2016 @04:50PM (#11121721)
Nope, because everything is ultimately dependent on the hardware key in the Secure Enclave and the user's passcode, neither of which Apple has knowledge of. The FBI would be able to create the OS, but they wouldn't be able to load it on the device without erasing it. It's really a brilliant system.
Re:Apple can comply with the FBI court order on Wednesday February 17, 2016 @04:49PM (#11121712)
It doesn't quite work that way. The files on the device are ultimately encrypted with a dependency on both the hardware key in the Secure Enclave and the user's passcode. It's impossible to update the firmware without both pieces of information or erasing the device, and on A7 or later processors the unlock attempt delay is a direct result of the method of encryption used and tied to the hardware so it must be performed on the device itself.

Re:Gravitational waves detected by LIGO on Thursday February 11, 2016 @09:54AM (#11080432)
It would mean that there are a lot more black holes in our local group, which could be a little concerning.

But yeah that's actually an application of LIGO once it's sensitive enough, because gravitational waves travel through just about anything including those annoying dust clouds :)

Re:Gravitational waves detected by LIGO on Thursday February 11, 2016 @09:51AM (#11080414)
From what I understand, it doesn't really matter because the laser light acts as a coherent wave, so it doesn't really bounce off of individual atoms, per se. As long as the mirrors are flat, all that matters is the relative distance between the mirrors.
Re:Time’s Almost Reversible Arrow on Friday January 08, 2016 @03:21PM (#10867906)
Put another way, aside from the possible "instantaneous influence" exception above, there are no "hidden variables" or mechanisms under the surface that we just haven't figured out yet. At that level it is truly probabilistic.
Re:Dropbox closing Carousel and Mailbox on Monday December 07, 2015 @12:25PM (#10690888)
It's such a pain to process hundreds of emails in Outlook, and there's no snoozing like there is with Mailbox or Inbox.
Would you rather federal employees work in some Kafka-esque grey cinder block 1984 Ministry type building?
Because I'm sure it would hold up in court. "Your honor, my client was clearly talking about someone who isn't them." "CASE DISMISSED." cheers erupt around the courtroom

This is a pretty nice idea, but without a mobile app it would be very difficult to recommend.

# Rails Senior Developer [ONSITE]

Hi everyone, I'm looking for one or two people to take my spot at my current company.

They have treated me super great, and I was super lucky to find this job in the first place, but I just recently got even luckier and am moving on to a new opportunity.

Ok so first I'm looking for a full-time, in house Senior Rails Developer with strong JavaScript skills (or decent JavaScript skills and the ability to catch up quickly). The job mostly entails maintaining and adding features to three in-house developed Rails apps that process stock data and provide business intelligence for the company. It's very interesting stuff, and you'll learn a lot about the stock market. You'll be working directly with the CEO and management team, and they're very pleasant to work with as a developer (they communicate well, they have reasonable expectations, and you'll have pretty much full autonomy regarding coding decisions). The pay is great, and the office is downtown. You get your own office, parking is included, and everyone at the company is great to work with. The company is also super generous with vacation time—we get about a month of paid time off around the end-of-year holidays, in addition to the regular vacation benefits and paid time off on market holidays.

It would be awesome if the person taking over my job also has decent desktop support and network skills, but if not we need a freelancer or IT support company who can be on call for that kind of stuff. Mostly it involves setting up Google Apps accounts, installing Office 365, and things like that. There's occasionally some harder stuff like opening up firewall ports, forwarding ports, troubleshooting videoconferencing equipment, and things like that.

Please email me at [email protected] if you're interested or if you have any recommendations. Thanks!

It should be noted that the negative effects were found in areas with much higher levels of fluoridation (i.e. areas of China with naturally occurring fluoride in groundwater) than are typical in the US. There wasn't enough information to draw conclusions about US fluoridation levels.
These are fiction, but they're really enjoyable futurist sci-fi. The first one is about the singularity, and the second one is a really unique and interesting take on artificial intelligence.

Pandas do eat some meat in the wild, they've been seen catching and eating birds and rodents.

It would take a hell of a lot of nukes to create enough energy to alter Earth's spin in any significant way.

"Tensor networks provide a mathematical tool capable of doing just that. In this view, space-time arises out of a series of interlinked nodes in a complex network, with individual morsels of quantum information fitted together like Legos. Entanglement is the glue that holds the network together. If we want to understand space-time, we must first think geometrically about entanglement, since that is how information is encoded between the immense number of interacting nodes in the system."

Wouldn't it be wild if this led to the realization that the universe is just a big blob of computronium and that we just happen to be some emergent behavior in it?

I understand that their business model is probably based on the whole "give away the razor, sell the blades" thing, but what they probably should do is just make the coffee maker a little more expensive.

Help a small San Diego non-profit school teach kids programming

Hi everyone! I just found out the non-profit school I volunteer at on the weekends is having a 24-hour fundraising drive and it ends at midnight tonight.Anyway, I teach kids programming on the weekends at a non-profit school in San Diego. It’s super fun, and I enjoy giving back to the community and future generations. After 9 years, the school has reached maximum capacity and is looking to...

Seems like it would be the opposite. Red-leaning areas tend to be more white and I'd imagine there's more of a "good ol boy" mentality instead of the adversarial situation between cops and citizens that you see predominantly black or latino areas (which are generally more liberal-leaning).
Food service workers and laborers are the most likely to be affected by these wage increases. I don't think anyone's going to be driving to China to get a Big Mac or flying in shelf stockers from Shenzhen.
