Because there are a million web-based ones?

This may not be the best place for this, but I run forth.news -- we publish primary sources, like releases/alerts from governments. (IPAWS -- the emergency alert system -- for example, is here: https://www.forth.news/lists/ipaws)

If there are PIOs/PAOs here who are looking for a new place to share alerts (for free), I'd love to chat. Our audience is growing quickly, and we can be a replacement for Facebook/Twitter/any other site making it more difficult for constituents to read alerts.

If an unrecognized AirTag is following you, you'll get a notice.

I'm not constantly notified that my keys are with me. But if you stuck an AirTag in my backpack, my phone would tell me.

I think the issue is psychological rather than currency. There's a judgment a user needs to make before reading every article where they can decide it's not worth it. X401 transactions are most likely crawlers, without that issue.

I agree with you in that we need to support the journalists doing the reporting. That's expensive, the companies that do it are mostly in dire financial straits, and most journalists themselves make very little money.

That said, micropayments have been tried over and over again, and fail. https://reutersinstitute.politics.ox.ac.uk/news/micropayment...

A universal subscription is incredibly difficult to set up logistically, especially wondering how you split up payments, who qualifies to be included, etc. Is it by traffic? That would incentivize clickbait even more.

I've written about my plan/thoughts here: https://blog.forth.news/a-business-model-for-21st-century-ne...

https://pro.forth.news

It's an extension of a longer-running project (https://www.forth.news) where it exposes and organizes 100s of newsworthy primary sources -- statements, press releases, press pool reports, emergency alerts, etc, whether from press email lists, X/Twitter, Bluesky, RSS, etc. The web UI is similar to TweetDeck - and it sends notifications.

Latest update now allows some panels to be based on an LLM prompt (i.e. "everything about the Iran War and its effects in the U.S.") which searches the entire catalog of sources as they are posted.
