Any FAANG workers here worried about the possibility of layoffs?

Ask HN: Are you worried about being laid off in the next year or two?

I'm a senior engineer in a FAANG company and have a couple coworkers that are certain that mass layoffs are coming. Both with the same rationale: high unemployment is going to lead to a massive reduction in spending which could obliterate ad spend which is almost all of our revenue. This sounds plausible to me, but these companies are also very cash rich and it is difficult to make predictions...

Software engineering in finance, you mean? How specialized is this?

Ask HN: Is there a better employment route to high earnings than FAANG?

I’m a 20something software engineer on a year sabbatical from a FAANG company and thinking about my employment options. My earnings are relatively high I think (at senior now, ~350k total comp with bonuses and auto-sell RSUs). However, the idea that I’ve already reached the max expected value for the effort I’m willing to expend as an employee in the industry is a little dreary to me (note: I...

My rationale for wanting to continue in tech is that my CV will not have weird gaps like "took a year off to teach English" and the money is presumably still better, even despite the low salaries there.

Will look into this, thanks!

Wow, I knew that Japan compensated engineers poorly but didn't realize that China pays well in comparison.

Unfortunately, money isn't as much the issue. I can afford and would be willing to live in Tokyo for a couple years and work on side projects, but this is not possible visa-wise.

Ask HN: Moving to Tokyo as a software engineer

I have noticed that there are many folks living in Japan as a software engineer on here, and I figured this would be one of the best places to ask this. How hard is it to find work in Tokyo for someone that does not speak Japanese? I'm in my mid-20s, at the 'senior' level equivalent at a FAANG company, and willing to take a pay cut for the experience.
