Re:RFC 9849. TLS Encrypted Client Hello on Wednesday March 04, 2026 @05:35AM (#47245612)
Cloudflare can and must decrypt the ClientHello for the sites it serves in order to actually serve the traffic. Using ECH with CF means you use their ECH domain and their keys.
Re:What Dynamic Typing Is For on Monday October 13, 2025 @04:10PM (#45572808)
This is the first time I see a compelling argument for using dynamic languages for writing web backends. Not that I actually write web backends, so maybe this is all obvious to real practicioners. Thanks for sharing!
Re:Immich v2.0.0 – First stable release on Thursday October 02, 2025 @08:04AM (#45448567)
Is Immich good at finding duplicates? And generally cleaning up a dump of photos? Or am I better off using Digikam for that before importing to Immich?
Re:I tried every todo app and ended up with a .txt file on Monday August 11, 2025 @02:49PM (#44867941)
How about writing new things at the top of the file? If you use dates as sections you can still add new things at the bottom of the current day, but you always have current day at top.

please do share how you do it :)
Re:The Bitter Prediction on Sunday April 13, 2025 @03:31AM (#43670831)
That’s a good point. I do think there still is some space to focus on just the coding as an engineer, but with AI the space is getting smaller.

this article precisely captures what i have been thinking recently. it’s really demotivating me.
Re:Interviewing a software engineer who prepared with AI on Tuesday April 08, 2025 @06:13AM (#43620019)
As a candidate, this sort of test gives me the worst possible impression of the company.

- 0 effort on your side - very stressful for me - completely unrelated to job - ridiculous definition of someone being “smart”

Actually, I would not even do the test most likely and I bet many others neither.

Re:Show HN: Ente Photos – v1.0 on Sunday March 30, 2025 @09:41AM (#43524122)
The iOS app looks great! I like that you also have a Linux app. Going to evaluate Ente over the next week by using it on those 2 platforms.

The pricing seems very reasonable as well and the free tier is good enough for me to give this a serious try.

Re:Operating System in 1,000 Lines – Intro on Wednesday January 08, 2025 @12:40PM (#42636554)
thanks for sharing! qemu is very powerful, but it’s hard to discocer a lot of these features
Re:Character Amnesia in China on Monday October 28, 2024 @05:26AM (#41969205)
Official standard defines around 8k characters in modern usage. I’d guesstimate native highly educated speaker recognizes maybe 6-7k at most.

Great piece that takes a step back from the concrete and looks at the situation through a broader lense. Really enjoyed the writing!

What to use for personal server setup automation?

I'd like to automate setting up Linux VMs with some minimal stuff like installing some packages, copying my dotfiles and updating some configuration like ssh and firewall.I know Ansible is used a lot for this kind of things, but is there anything simpler out there for the kind of minimal setup I am looking to automate? I see Ansible is not getting much love, not sure why, but that makes me...

Tell HN: Redpanda is spamming emails taken from GitHub profiles

On my email that is just publicly used on my Github account I have repeatedly received marketing emails from the company behind Redpanda since 2021 without ever consenting to such and without any way to opt out. Replying to the email that I wish to not receive them has not helped. The newest email from this year has a “Not interested” button, so apparently they have learned a bit. Let’s see if...

I still haven’t settled on what to do next, but for sure I will continue with educational material for now as I don’t have concrete goals to contribute to “real world” projects (yet). I also like having some structured path layed out for me, it makes it easier work on it every other day and not get stuck wondering what best to do next.

As for more serious projects I am interested in and could be a potential follow up to contribute to a bigger kernel, there are SerenityOS and RedoxOS.

I found the instructions for the labs clear and at the right level of detail for me that I did not have questions about what was required for the solution. They have a hints section that really get you started enough in my opinion, sometimes I looked at those a bit too early in retrospect. Then for understanding the part of the codebase that the lab was extending the book was sufficient as extra material for me. There are even lectures online for the 2019 version, but the theoretical side was something I had at least familiarity with before, so I did not watch those.

Ask HN: AI tools for explaining/annotating codebases?

I haven't followed the space with too much effort, currently I am only making use of ChatGPT to explain code snippets or ask questions about the Linux kernel source. But by now, I bet there is already some better solution out there specific for the task of explaining large codebases, would love to hear what everyone here has tried out.I do not understand the limits of LLMs, is it possible to...
