Testing voice agents would require some kind of knowledge integration. Do you have any plans to support custom knowledge bases for test voice agents ?

The Alignment Problem by Brian Christian. It sets up the complexity of ML field and human values. It paints a picture to the readers on the future we navigate.
Re:Ask HN: Cooking classes (mainly Asian) in SF? on Sunday December 01, 2024 @12:57AM (#42286525)
Culinary Institute of America at Napa runs bootcamps. It is pricey but worth it if you want life-long skill.

There are several cuisine specific classes in SF downtown. They are listed in eventbrite.com.

Shirakawa-go is amazing in winter and summer. The local homestay reservations had to be made very early. https://www.japan-guide.com/e/e5956.html

Also, any onsen city is worth going in the winter.

This could be a fit for serverless frameworks. AWS Lambda and similar frameworks can help you with such usecases. Take a look at Firecracker VM and microVM space.

Re:Ask HN: How to Grieve? on Tuesday January 18, 2022 @07:02PM (#29988003)
I have nothing to offer. There are 7 billion ways people may respond to grief. There is no template. Don't try to fit your behavior on "how to grieve" template especially from an internet forum, in case you didnt agree to their response. Please go with the your flow. Your answer to your question could be just a rewording "This is how I grieve, and its normal".
Please post it in reddit/r/covid19. There might be more interested parties there.
Re:Unilever Buys Dollar Shave Club for $1B on Wednesday July 20, 2016 @12:47AM (#12126954)
This is because people have different types of skins, and even for the same skin - depending upon time of day it could be soft or rough. Also the shaving cream/oil matters for the shave. Thats the reason why Trundle advises to try different blades. Whats good for one, might be bad for another person. IMHO most important factor which most people overlook is actually the angle of the shave. They blame it on the blade, instead of correcting their technique.

Re:Financial Misstatements on Friday August 21, 2015 @02:42PM (#10099467)
So where can one learn about financial terms or processes before running a company ?. Most people are familiar with AWS than with SEC.
I would like to sound a caution, if you are using this data for any kind of salary negotiation.

- LCA for a candidate is filed only once per company as long as he is in the same job role. Factos like getting promoted to Senior X, recent pay-hikes would not get reflected in LCA.

- Wage listed may not include bonus, and other compensation. So dont leave money on the table while negotiating. Crosscheck with glassdoor.

- Companies also go through frequent job title changes, so it is possible you might miss more dataset hidden in other job titles.

- When you are looking for wage related idea, only latest year matters.

- Some people have mentioned earlier that H1B have 10-20% less salary. My personal experience says otherwise. There is always bound to be variation even among non H1B.

Finally - I am not a lawyer, and none of it are legal or professional advice.

Re:Learning 'the cloud' on Thursday April 30, 2015 @02:29PM (#9466789)
There are various flavors of cloud. For example Google cloud is mostly app or app based cloud, while AWS is bare metal cloud.

I would suggest following this blog - http://highscalability.com

which goes into real life architecture of various services and gives behind-the-scene look into cloud and non-cloud architecture, and why they chose to use certain tools or technologies.

Core concepts in domains like virtualization, networking, authentication, scalability are the same whether you do it in your own data center or cloud.

My advice is to strengthen yourself in core concepts.

Re:Ask HN: best seats on a plane on Sunday November 07, 2010 @01:23AM (#1878767)
I flew every week for last 3 years. So here are my truths from trenches

- Avoid seats in the middle. Period. Exception - exit row or front row seats

- Select seats which do not have seats in front

- Do careful consideration before taking emergency exit seats. The door is more than 50 pounds. You need to unlatch it , twist-turn to get the door inside or throw it out.

- Do not take seats beyond the half way of the plane. The more you go behind, more you hear engine noise and longer it takes to disembark

- Avoid seats near toilets. You need to put up with stink or people standing in your legroom

- Take aisle seats if the wheels-2-wheels time is more than 3 hours

- For frequent flyers - note down the sun direction if you are taking window seat. It will help you choose left window seat or right window seat. You do not want to face the sun all the way during the flight. You selected window seat for a view, it is stupid to close down the windows.

- If flying red eye, choose window seat because you can rest your head against the window.

Re:Ask HN: Review my Twilio SMS app, friendpods on Friday September 17, 2010 @10:41PM (#1703556)
Few comments on minor details

Your definition of what friendpod is - includes the friendpod word itself. Also I had read 4 lines to get to the line what friendpod is actually is. It could be reworded as

friendpod is a group texting service. When one of you sends a text it goes to everyone in your friendpod. Use it for - your roommates - people you go out with on weekends - friends from home - a few coworkers

Friends from home ?. It doesn't make sense to me.

Also the other thing, there is a similar named website - friendspod.com ( a service in India) offering vaguely similar service. Choice of website name could have been better.

My $0.0.2

Ask HN: How does a RDBMS developer migrate to noSQL ?

I am used to seeing data in tables and their relationship via foreign keys. I would like to move on to noSQL (key-value) store. A challenge to me is how to stop thinking about foreign keys and tables and think everything in a single key-value store. Does anyone point to guide/links how to move away from RDBMS mindset to key-value store mindset. Real life examples of moving rdbms schemas to...

To an Indian from a fellow Indian,

The companies you have quoted are 1. In pure service delivery (aka consulting line of business) 2. Run extra-ordinarily large project teams (100+ consultants) 3. Deal with business or enterprise software.

It is unfair to expect them to deliver any quality line of work when organizations deals with even 1 of 3. Your perception of Top big 5 consulting firms (for that matter..any country) delivering quality output might be misplaced if you haven't seen the quality of work at hackathons, startups. Outsourcing works for huge organizations which need to maintain enterprise systems running on legacy platform. It is recognized by most small business owners everywhere its just ain't their cup of tea. Small business projects runs on talent and execution. Not on mythical manpower or cost per hour rate.

I would suggest you to do an internship at SV,Colorado,Boston,NY and get involved in a startup or any non-business software company. It might open up another world perspective.

As someone familiar with Indian IT ecosystem, please bear in mind Indian IT system is different bit and lags behind SV. Indian IT system is pro-Microsoft rather than Linux based. Indian CS/IT education concentrates on MS Windows from lower grades itself.

There are two sections of people you might face - those who need IT literacy so that they can move on with jobs like DTP, Admin Assisstant and those whose career would like to be built on computer science.

For IT literacy section, familiarity with MS Windows, MS Office (or OpenOffice alternative), Internet Browsing, Accounting packages like Tally, Computer and printer hardware assembling and troubleshooting

For Computer Science section, you will still need

Programming: GWBASIC (or latest MS Simple Basic) to get them familiar with programming and their syntatic structures. Database: SQL language based on DBASE III (or latest MySQL alternatives).

Teaching programming in C,C++ and Java always helps, as most schools and companies insists them as your passphrase in your resume to be even considered for written tests (talk about idiocrazy)

One another thing I faced during my career start, I could not afford any computer literature like books, magazines as it is way too expensive even for great Indian middle-class. So wherever possible, I try to sponsor computer magazines and books to local libraries and private lending libraries so my fellow citizens have better learning opportunities than me.
