Re:Why you shouldn't exercise to lose weight on Friday April 29, 2016 @03:11PM (#11598041)
Followed by a paragraph describing that it's just a hypothesis and they'll have to reconcile with studies that show that you burn more energy with exercise. I didn't say that doing 400 calories of exercise in a day was easy, or that it wouldn't make you way more hungry and prone to eating more, which are the main points of this article.

That's why I said that you have to find some compromise that works for yourself, I didn't say where that balance lay for most people.

It's literally just calories in vs. calories out. If 400 calories/day meets your weight loss goals, all you have to do is make sure that the calories you expend + the calories you no longer intake = 400. The ratio of those two factors completely varies from person to person on what their motivation levels are going to be, but as long as it works for you it will result in the same amount of weight loss as any other ratio

The only party that benefits from tips is the employer (let's not go into the employee distinction right now though). It just shifts the responsibility to the customer to determine whether or not the employee should be paid for their work.

Contrary to what it might look like, rowing is almost entirely dependent on your legs, your arms/back merely keep the momentum going at the back of the stroke. Also, the muscles in your back are nowhere near as strong/large as the muscles in your legs, there's nearly a magnitude of difference. Though if you added power from your arms in addition to fully utilizing your legs (it would be much harder to concentrate) then there would be a benefit. But then you run into how to engineer such a thing, especially with respect to aerodynamics.
Re:Waterloo Co-op: A Blessing and a Curse on Friday April 24, 2015 @01:52AM (#9431644)
I would be interested to see what others have to say about the different co-op program running at the University of Toronto: instead of the multiple 4/8-month co-op terms we have a single 16-month co-op term between 3rd and 4th year. You're encouraged to find your own internships after 1st and 2nd year, but the career centre provides (basically) no aid. If you do however find work those two summers you end up with the same amount of work experience in the end, but with several of those terms (potentially) at the same company back-to-back. I personally chose UofT over Waterloo because I accepted the line of 'companies are more open to hiring students available for a longer time because they get more out of training, so you'll have better opportunities available' at the time. However, I can see many arguments for and against both co-op systems. It's hard for me to be objective about it as I've yet to see the long-term consequences, and I've managed to get pretty great internships every summer plus my coming 16-month term. I'd really like to hear other opinions of people who may never have heard of such a program (both in what's better for the student and what's better for companies who run internship programs)!

Ask HN: Should I worry about having a job offer retracted?

At my school, many students are about to receive offers for summer co-op terms within the next two weeks. However, none of them have ever even considered negotiating their offers, and when I try to show them how easy it could be for them to make a couple thousand dollars extra they immediately start protesting:"If I try to play hardball they'll just offer it to the next highest ranked...

Oh of course, there's little doubt he committed treason, but the fact that his homosexuality was used to ensure that a fair trial was impossible is what I was trying to get at.

Are there any other similar cases to Turing/Wilde/Casement that I don't know about?

I'm sure may of you are aware of Alan Turing and Oscar Wilde's prosecution for gross indecency (and if you're not you most definitely should!), but you should all also learn about the similar prosecution against Roger Casement. He was the father of human-rights investigations and made a huge impact with his investigations of human-rights abuses in Peru and the Congo. Mario Vargas Llosa (Nobel prize-winner for Literature) wrote a book detailing his life called The Dream of the Celts. Highly recommended.
Re:Exercising but Gaining Weight on Wednesday November 12, 2014 @11:29PM (#8599937)
This study shows a bit of what the general public really needs to understand about personal health: it's very hard to train multiple aspects of your fitness with only one type of activity.

Doing cardio makes you better at cardio. Strength training makes you stronger. Diet and hypertrophy improves your body composition.

You'll always hear people say "Oh your legs must be so strong from all those marathons you do." Entirely false, their cardio-vascular system is strong. I can virtually guarantee that any moderately dedicated powerlifter can squat more than a long-distance runner (form notwithstanding). Similarly, a marathoner's lean physique is a result of their diet, which they require in order to be successful at running, not because of their training.

I really wish that more people would take the time to sit down, identify their fitness goals, and ensure that their lifestyle is focused towards achieving their goals. For most people, all this is taking a good look at your diet!

Your codename seems to be a collection of random words, the number of which you get to specify.
Yeah, I've heard great things about the Wordpress community! Some of the others that I've found have a great support base are Open Streetmap, Open Science, and Ubuntu.

Ahhhhh now I want to go back and read Rendezvous with Rama. But I'm scared to reread it, I don't want to tarnish my memory of it.

Ask HN: What technologies should I be learning with my 20% time?

So I'm a student, and this summer at my internship I'm being given some form of "20% time". Ideally, I'd like to use this time to make myself more work-ready for when I go on a 16-month internship next year. What technologies would you recommend learning for a still-learning student interested in embedded systems and back-end development? Thanks!
