Re:Payments Startup Stripe (YC S10) Joins the Billion Dollar Club on Wednesday January 22, 2014 @08:18PM (#7106484)
Keith Rabois is apparently teaming up with Stripe too. What a day for them!

NSA-proof? The willingness to say this makes it suspect. shrug
The email refers to a hole having to do with bitly. Anyone have more info?
Re:Does Snapchat's CEO Need to Go? on Friday January 03, 2014 @04:19PM (#7008243)
It might be because the CEO is basically the same age as his users.

I wish they'd use the leaked database to get my phone number and then have pugs call me.

Re:Poll: How often do you exercise? on Monday December 30, 2013 @12:18PM (#6985539)
I never exercise, but I play drums for a couple hours multiple times a week and I walk everywhere.

I don't call it exercise because it's all a lot of fun

Re:Bitcoin and positive vs. normative economics on Saturday December 28, 2013 @03:12PM (#6976263)
This is an easy one to understand.

Krugman was a proponent of mass inflation, aka. helicopters of money, as a solution to the credit crisis. Bitcoin makes it basically impossible to manipulate the money supply the way the Fed has done to navigate the 2008 crisis.

Krugman sees Bitcoin as a threat to the central banks ability to stabilize the economy.

Re:Apply to the Winter 2014 Batch of Hacker School on Saturday November 16, 2013 @07:32PM (#6747016)
What you refer to as "dickwaving" is them attempting to understand your eye for detail. Great hackers often have fantastic eyes for detail. You might have one, but you missed your chance to demonstrate it by interpreting this so negatively.

Please read the Hacker School Manual for a look at how seriously they take treating people with decency and respect: https://www.hackerschool.com/manual

Re:Future Internet aims to sever links with servers on Wednesday October 30, 2013 @09:50AM (#6640491)
This isn't revolutionary, this is BitTorrent.
I don't think so. Meetup will ask them and provide a mailing list so reaching them is possible while still maintaining their privacy.

You can, of course, ask them for anything and see if they offer.

From someone who's organized multiple meetups in NYC, Hack And Tell being the most well-known, I would say just start the meetup. There's a high probability of lots of people in NYC thinking in the same direction you're thinking, but what you want to do is start letting them know there is a place they can find like-minded people.

Further, meetup will help get eyes on the event. They've been very helpful for my meetups. They're even willing to host them and buy beer / pizza for the attendees.

You'll know within a few months if it's not speaking to people, but more importantly, you'll know if the opposite is true.

Re:The Revel Web Framework for Go on Friday July 05, 2013 @07:41PM (#5997231)
The tendency to overlook concerns of security is not unique to web frameworks.
Re:An encrypted message to Edward Snowden on Friday June 14, 2013 @11:18PM (#5883794)
painfully cheesy
I wonder if these patterns are related to male pattern baldness too?
I think it could work in theory, but the risks appear to be higher. I speculate that it's easier to build a successful TV series than it is to build a popular record.

I'm no expert in the music industry, but I've played in multiple bands, gone on national tours, and have friends who are legit rock stars so I know a thing or two. But like I said, the above is speculation and I'm no expert.

Offline mode for video would be fantastic.
Re:Meetup, you've been bad, bad hosts on Sunday January 20, 2013 @09:32AM (#5087005)
I run three meetups and know a bunch of the folks that work there. They are extremely fair minded people. Fairer than I am myself. Given what I know of the people, the service, and my experience hosting three meetups, this story doesn't feel right.

Meetup has done a lot to bolster the tech community in NYC. I have met almost all of my tech friends in NYC via meetups. Meetup employees even come to some of my meetups. I know for a fact that they care about creating positive environments where attendees are not bombarded by commercial interests. They want you to go kayaking with other kayakers, talk about programming with programmers, or find out how to cook fantastic vegan food with other vegans.

False positives sometimes occur and it's a shame. Perhaps meetup could've been more proactive before shutting the group down. I personally feel confident that meetup looked at the group and made a fair decision that it was indeed violating the terms of service.

As I mentioned above, I host three meetups so perhaps I'm biased. Here are they: http://www.meetup.com/hack-and-tell/ - http://www.meetup.com/DUMBO-Tech-Breakfast/ - http://nyc.brubeck.io/

If folks would prefer to use eventbrite, obviously do so. Eventbrite has no community building tools. It is a website for tickets. Meetup, on the other hand, cares so much about building communities that their whole site is built for this purpose. You will lose that.

That's exactly how the company got started. They sold DOS before they even owned it.

Because he expresses uncertainty in more than one of his take-aways. He uses stronger language when he has more confidence in the idea.

"This may have..." or "I believe" or "this seems" all suggest he isn't stating fact and is instead thinking out loud about the possible implications of his experience.

In other words: it's obvious the author knows he is reflecting on anecdotes.
